Para la captura del polen se utilizaron captadores volumétricos tipo Hirst (Burkard Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Rickmansworth, UK), colocados a una altura aproximada de 15 metros en dos edificios en el área metropolitana de Monterrey (AMM). La cantidad total de polen registrada durante el periodo estudiado fue de 68 962 granos. Los meses de máxima incidencia de polen fueron febrero y marzo del 2004 con 13 225 y 10 384 granos, respectivamente y con un promedio mensual de 2 873 granos. Los taxa de mayor ocurrencia y posiblemente de importancia alergológica para el área metropolitana de Monterrey son Fraxinus sp (14 312 granos), Cupressaceae-Taxodiaceae (12 448 granos), Parietaria pensylvanica (12 354 granos), Poaceae (4 808 granos), Celtis sp (3 153 granos), Moraceae (1 806 granos), Pinus sp con 2 693 granos, Ambrosia confertiflora (2 132 granos), Ricinus communis con 1 697 granos, Amaranthaceae-Chenopodiaceae (1 691 granos), Quercus sp (1 360 granos), Prosopis sp (1 227 granos), Platanus occidentalis (725 granos) y Carya sp con 687 granos.]]></p></abstract>

<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los granos de polen maduros contienen en su interior a las c&eacute;lulas sexuales masculinas de las plantas con flores. Se forman en el interior de los estambres y, una vez maduros, son liberados a la atm&oacute;sfera. Su funci&oacute;n biol&oacute;gica es alcanzar la parte femenina de una flor de su misma especie (polinizaci&oacute;n) y hacer posible la fecundaci&oacute;n de la ovoc&eacute;lula. En algunas especies (plantas aut&oacute;gamas) el polen puede realizar su funci&oacute;n en la misma flor o en la misma planta que lo ha formado, pero en la mayor&iacute;a de las especies (plantas al&oacute;gamas) el polen s&oacute;lo resulta viable si alcanza una ovoc&eacute;lula de otra planta de su misma especie. El traslado del polen desde el &oacute;rgano donde se ha formado hasta la parte femenina de la flor se conoce con el nombre de polinizaci&oacute;n y puede efectuarse de maneras diversas, que son caracter&iacute;sticas para cada especie. El proceso de polinizaci&oacute;n requiere que los granos de polen, sean especialmente resistentes, ya que se ven sometidos a condiciones adversas que podr&iacute;an provocar el colapso y desecaci&oacute;n de los componentes celulares, alter&aacute;ndolos y haciendo el polen inviable (Belmonte&#150;Soler &amp; Roure&#150;Nolla, 2002).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La aeropalinolog&iacute;a tiene como objetivo el an&aacute;lisis de los granos de polen y esporas, como tambi&eacute;n los distintos factores que inciden en su liberaci&oacute;n, dispersi&oacute;n y permanencia en la atm&oacute;sfera: &eacute;poca de floraci&oacute;n, capacidad de dispersi&oacute;n de los granos de polen (factores biol&oacute;gicos); precipitaci&oacute;n, humedad, temperatura, direcci&oacute;n y velocidad del viento (factores meteorol&oacute;gicos) que interact&uacute;an entre s&iacute; (Gatusso <i>et al., </i>2003; Thompson &amp; Thompson, 2003). &Eacute;sta se puede considerar a su vez como una parte de la Aerobiolog&iacute;a que se ocupa del estudio de toda forma de vida atmosf&eacute;rica (S&aacute;enz de Rivas, 1978). Desde que Bostok en 1828 describi&oacute; la enfermedad "catarrus aestivus", a la que m&aacute;s tarde William Gordon denomin&oacute; con el nombre de "fiebre del heno" ahora conocida como "polinosis", se han venido realizando estudios tanto para el conocimiento de la concentraci&oacute;n a&eacute;rea del polen alerg&eacute;nico y la fenolog&iacute;a de los vegetales que lo producen, as&iacute; como para conocer los fen&oacute;menos desencadenantes de la alergia pol&iacute;nica, por lo que el inter&eacute;s en la aeropalinolog&iacute;a es debido a que los granos de polen son aerotransportadores de alergenos respiratorios, que causan cuadros de polinosis en numerosos pacientes al&eacute;rgicos.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Las enfermedades al&eacute;rgicas constituyen un grupo importante de padecimientos, pues aunque generalmente no ponen en peligro la vida, s&iacute; son base de entidades patol&oacute;gicas que pueden ser incapacitantes y deteriorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes, como rinitis al&eacute;rgica, dermatitis at&oacute;pica y asma, esta &uacute;ltima pudiendo llegar a ser mortal (Meza&#150;V&aacute;zquez <i>et al., </i>1999). Los factores ambientales, como los p&oacute;lenes, juegan un papel muy importante en la inducci&oacute;n de s&iacute;ntomas al&eacute;rgicos (Sienra&#150;Monge <i>et al. </i>1999). Estos s&iacute;ntomas aparecen durante una estaci&oacute;n definida en la cual los aeroalergenos son abundantes en el aire. El periodo de exposici&oacute;n a estos al&eacute;rgenos depende de la localizaci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica (Skoner, 2001). Son considerados p&oacute;lenes alerg&eacute;nicos los correspondientes a las familias de plantas como Poaceae, Oleaceae, Urticaceae, Compositae, Amaranthaceae&#150;Chenopodiaceae, Plantaginaceae, Polygonaceae, Betulaceae, Platanaceae, Cupressaceae, Fagaceae, Pinaceae y Euphorbiaceae (Valero&#150;Santiago &amp; Picada&#150;Valles, 2002). </font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El objetivo de este estudio fue el de cuantificar el polen atmosf&eacute;rico de importancia alergol&oacute;gica presente en el &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey durante el periodo de marzo del 2003 a febrero del 2005.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>MATERIAL Y M&Eacute;TODOS</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Para la captura y recuento del polen atmosf&eacute;rico se tomaron en cuenta las recomendaciones de la Asociaci&oacute;n Panamericana de Aerobiolog&iacute;a utilizando  captadores volum&eacute;tricos tipo Hirst (Hirst, 1952).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Muestreo. </b>El muestreo se llev&oacute; a cabo en &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey, Nuevo Le&oacute;n. Para ello se instalaron dos colectores volum&eacute;tricos tipo Hirst (Burkard Manufacturing Co., UK) y una vez verificado su correcto funcionamiento, semanalmente se prepar&oacute; una cinta Melinex<sup>&reg;</sup> de 345 mm recubierta con aceite de silic&oacute;n como adhesivo y se coloc&oacute; en el tambor rotatorio del aparato. El aparato se regul&oacute; a un flujo de aire constante de 10 litros/minuto, el cual penetra a trav&eacute;s de un orificio de 2 x 14 mm, quedando las part&iacute;culas s&oacute;lidas impactadas en la cinta, la cual se va desplazando a una velocidad de 2 mm/hora. El tiempo de una rotaci&oacute;n completa del tambor es de siete d&iacute;as exactos. La cinta se cambi&oacute; semanalmente y una vez retirada del aparato se transport&oacute; cuidadosamente al Laboratorio de Anatom&iacute;a y Fisiolog&iacute;a Vegetal para su procesamiento.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Montaje de las muestras. En el laboratorio de Anatom&iacute;a y Fisiolog&iacute;a Vegetal, la cinta se dividi&oacute; en siete segmentos, cada uno de 48 mm de longitud, correspondientes a cada d&iacute;a de muestreo; cada uno de estos segmentos se adhiri&oacute; con glicero&#150;gelatina te&ntilde;ida con fucsina a un portaobjetos est&aacute;ndar de vidrio.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Identificaci&oacute;n de los granos de polen. </b>Una vez procesadas las muestras de los colectores, se procedi&oacute; al an&aacute;lisis microsc&oacute;pico de las mismas. Para la identificaci&oacute;n de los diferentes taxa se utilizaron las obras de Kremp (1965), Erdtman (1966), Faegri e Iversen (1989) y Kapp <i>et al. </i>(2000). Adem&aacute;s se realiz&oacute; la comparaci&oacute;n de las muestras pol&iacute;nicas con la colecci&oacute;n de referencia, donde se encuentran representadas las especies que componen la vegetaci&oacute;n del &aacute;rea de estudio.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Recuentos pol&iacute;nicos. </b>Para determinar la concentraci&oacute;n media diaria de granos de polen total y por tax&oacute;n, se realiz&oacute; un conteo en cada muestra montada, para lo cual se leyeron al microscopio &oacute;ptico cuatro barridos longitudinales, utilizando el objetivo de 40x, de acuerdo a las recomendaciones de Dom&iacute;nguez <i>et al. </i>(1992). Durante la realizaci&oacute;n de los barridos se identificaron y cuantificaron los granos de polen presentes y los resultados obtenidos de este conteo se extrapolaron a unidades de granos por volumen de aire (granos/m<sup>3</sup>), multiplic&aacute;ndose por el factor de correcci&oacute;n de 0.54.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>RESULTADOS Y DISCUSI&Oacute;N</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se registr&oacute; un total de 68 962 granos de polen en el aire del &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey durante el periodo de estudio. En la <a href="/img/revistas/polib/n28/a9f1.jpg" target="_blank">figura 1</a> se aprecian las concentraciones pol&iacute;nicas diarias de polen total registradas en el &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey, en donde se puede observar que las mayores concentraciones diarias se registraron principalmente durante los meses de enero, febrero y marzo, y que durante los meses de julio y agosto se registraron los valores m&aacute;s bajos de concentraci&oacute;n.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Respecto a los valores diarios durante el periodo de estudio, el valor m&aacute;ximo fue de 767 granos/m<sup>3</sup> registrado el d&iacute;a 19 de febrero del 2004 y el valor promedio diario es de 52 granos. En cuanto al valor total mensual, se encontr&oacute; que &eacute;ste present&oacute; su nivel m&aacute;s alto en el mes de febrero de 2004 con un total de 13 225 granos; un nivel m&iacute;nimo en el mes de noviembre de 2004 con un total de 682 granos y un promedio mensual de 2 587 granos (<a href="/img/revistas/polib/n28/a9f2.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 2</a>).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se identificaron un total de 90 taxa o tipos pol&iacute;nicos para el &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey, encontrando que los taxa de mayor incidencia atmosf&eacute;rica e importancia alergol&oacute;gica y cuyo conjunto representa el 90% del total son (<a href="#t1">tabla 1</a>): <i>Fraxinus </i>sp, Cupressaceae&#150;Taxodiaceae, <i>Parietaria pensylvanica, </i>Poaceae, <i>Celtis </i>sp, Moraceae, <i>Pinus </i>sp, <i>Ambrosia confertiflora, Ricinus communis, </i>el complejo Amaranthaceae&#150;Chenopodiaceae, <i>Quercus </i>sp, <i>Prosopis </i>sp, <i>Platanus occidentalis </i>y <i>Carya </i>sp. Estos resultados coinciden con el estudio realizado por Bronillet Tarrago (1996) en la atm&oacute;sfera de ciudad de M&eacute;xico, en donde menciona que los taxa dominantes son Al<i>nus, Casuarina, </i>Compositae y Poaceae; por otra parte L&oacute;pez <i>et al. </i>(2003), mencionan que los tipos pol&iacute;nicos m&aacute;s abundantes en el aire de la ciudad de Torre&oacute;n (Coahuila) corresponden a Poaceae, <i>Amaranthus, Am<i>brosia </i>y Asteraceae en el periodo de junio 1995 a febrero de 1996.</i></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="t1"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/polib/n28/a9t1.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Tipos pol&iacute;nicos alergol&oacute;gicos</b></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Amaranthaceae&#150;Chenopodiaceae </b>(amaranto, quelite, rodadora). Estas plantas comparten varias caracter&iacute;sticas bot&aacute;nicas y sus granos de polen no pueden distinguirse, ya que presentan morfolog&iacute;a, y forma similar al microscopio &oacute;ptico (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3a</a>) (Singh &amp; Kumar, 2003; Alfaya &amp; Marqu&eacute;s, 2002). Para este tipo pol&iacute;nico se registr&oacute; un total de 1 691 granos (2.5%) durante el periodo de estudio. La media diaria m&aacute;xima fue de s&oacute;lo 18 granos/m<sup>3 </sup>registrado el d&iacute;a 11 de septiembre (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). Se sabe que las concentraciones de polen de Amaranthaceae&#150;Chenopodiaceae nunca alcanzan valores altos, sin embargo se ha demostrado su capacidad para producir enfermedades al&eacute;rgicas respiratorias y se considera que puede provocar s&iacute;ntomas en los pacientes sensibles con concentraciones muy bajas, a partir de 10&#150;15 granos/m<sup>3</sup> de aire (Alfaya &amp; Marqu&eacute;s, 2002).</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f3"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/polib/n28/a9f3.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="center"><font size="2" face="verdana"><a name="f4"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font size="2" face="verdana"><img src="/img/revistas/polib/n28/a9f4.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Ambrosia confertiflora</b> </i>(ambrosia) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3b</a>). El polen de esta especie registr&oacute; un total de 2 132 granos (3%) durante el periodo estudiado; registr&aacute;ndose la media diaria m&aacute;xima de 140 granos/m<sup>3</sup> el 13 de octubre del 2003 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). El polen de ambrosia se detecta en la atm&oacute;sfera del AMM fundamentalmente durante los meses de septiembre a diciembre. Este polen es la m&aacute;s importante causa de rinitis al&eacute;rgica y asma en Norteam&eacute;rica, es una planta anem&oacute;fila y produce millones de granos de polen que viajan a grandes distancias debido a su tama&ntilde;o peque&ntilde;o (Carosso &amp; Gallesio, 2000). Adem&aacute;s ha sido mencionada en Estados Unidos (Frenz <i>et al., </i>1995), Canad&aacute; (Comtois &amp; Sherknies, 1992), Australia (Bass <i>et al., </i>2000), Espa&ntilde;a (Belmonte <i>et al., </i>2000), Hungr&iacute;a (Vit&aacute;nyi <i>et al., </i>2003; Makra <i>et al., </i>2005), Turqu&iacute;a (Kaplan <i>et al., </i>2003) y Asia (Lu <i>et al., </i>1994; Sugaya <i>et al., </i>1997; Tsai et al., 1997) como un potencial al&eacute;rgeno causante de asma y rinitis al&eacute;rgica. Las especies de A. <i>artemisiifolia </i>y <i>A. trifida </i>han sido reportadas como al&eacute;rgenos en Hungr&iacute;a, Australia, Eslovaquia y en la Rep&uacute;blica Checa (Jarai&#150;Koml&oacute;di &amp; Juhasz, 1993; D'Amato <i>et al., </i>1998; Rybnicek <i>et al., </i>2000). Por otro lado Jager <i>et al. </i>(1991) registra concentraciones diarias de Ambrosia menores de 20 granos/m<sup>3 </sup>concentraci&oacute;n suficiente para inducir una respuesta alerg&eacute;nica, esto es confirmado por Laadi &amp; Laadi (1999), quien se&ntilde;ala que la cantidad m&iacute;nima de polen que provoca alergia corresponde a 13 granos/m<sup>3</sup>, en el &aacute;rea de estudio esta media diaria se alcanz&oacute; durante 37 d&iacute;as.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Carya </b></i><b>sp</b> (nogal) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3c</a>). Se present&oacute; de finales de marzo a finales de mayo. Las medias diarias m&aacute;s altas se detectaron en el mes de abril, siendo el mayor registro el correspondiente al d&iacute;a 19 de abril de 2004, con 82 granos/m<sup>3</sup>. El total para el periodo estudiado fue de 687 granos representando el 1% (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). Las concentraciones de este tax&oacute;n detectadas en el a&ntilde;o 2004 fueron muy superiores a las detectadas en el a&ntilde;o anterior (2003). El polen de <i>Carya </i>es considerado con alta alergenicidad, en Norteam&eacute;rica est&aacute; catalogado como una causa importante de rinitis al&eacute;rgica (Ogden <i>et al., </i>1974; Rachmiel <i>et al., </i>1996). En Israel durante mayo, los granos de polen del nogal comprenden un 70% del total de polen, por lo que est&aacute; correlacionado con la incidencia de fiebre del heno en la poblaci&oacute;n expuesta. La contribuci&oacute;n del polen de nogal a los s&iacute;ntomas fue altamente significativa despu&eacute;s del olivo y el cipr&eacute;s que tambi&eacute;n polinizan en la primavera. En ni&ntilde;os, el nogal constituye un posible agente etiol&oacute;gico para el desarrollo del asma (Rachmiel <i>et al., </i>1996).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Celtis </b></i><b>sp</b> (granjeno, palo blanco) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3d</a>). De acuerdo a los registros obtenidos durante el periodo de estudio para este polen se encontr&oacute; que est&aacute; presente en un 4.57% (3 153 granos), el m&aacute;ximo registro diario fue de 49 granos/m<sup>3</sup> el d&iacute;a 7 de abril del 2004 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). La presencia en la atm&oacute;sfera del polen de <i>Celtis </i>ha sido reportada en Italia (Torri <i>et al., </i>1997), Estados Unidos (Levetin <i>et al.</i>, 2000), Argentina (Gatusso <i>et al., </i>2003) y Nigeria (Chukwuemeka&#150;Njokuocha, 2006).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Cupressaceae&#150;Taxodiaceae </b>(<a href="#f3">Fig. 3e</a>). La suma diaria registrada para este tipo pol&iacute;nico fue de 12 448 granos (18%), registr&aacute;ndose las concentraciones m&aacute;ximas mensuales en diciembre y enero; el m&aacute;ximo registro diario corresponde al d&iacute;a 10 de enero de 2005, con 700 granos/m<sup>3 </sup>(<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). En Espa&ntilde;a el periodo de polinizaci&oacute;n de las cupres&aacute;ceas es similar al de Francia o Italia, prolong&aacute;ndose de octubre a abril y siendo, en general, m&aacute;ximo en febrero&#150;marzo (Subiza <i>et al.</i>, 1998). En un estudio realizado por Subiza <i>et al. </i>(1998), sobre polinosis en 12 ciudades espa&ntilde;olas, las estaciones de Toledo, Madrid y Sevilla presentaron los recuentos m&aacute;s altos, con variaciones interanuales importantes, destacando la intensidad de la estaci&oacute;n de octubre 1996&#150;abril 1997 en la que llegaron a alcanzarse concentraciones &gt;700 granos/ m<sup>3</sup> como media diaria m&aacute;xima. Miembros de la familia Cupressaceae han demostrado ser un importante causa de polinosis en algunos pa&iacute;ses (Di Felice <i>et al., </i>2001; Ozasa <i>et al.</i>, 2002; Arilla <i>et al.</i>, 2004; D&iacute;az de la Guardia <i>et al., </i>2006; Lo &amp; Levetin, 2007). En Ciudad Real su participaci&oacute;n en el calendario pol&iacute;nico anual es del 7.9% y el grado de positividad en las pruebas cut&aacute;neas es moderado con el 16% (Feo <i>et al., </i>1998).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Fraxinus </b></i><b>sp</b> (fresno) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3f</a>). Se registr&oacute; una concentraci&oacute;n total de 14 312 granos (20.7%) y una media diaria m&aacute;xima de 623 granos/m<sup>3</sup> el 5 de febrero del 2004. La presencia de este tipo pol&iacute;nico en el aire es de enero a marzo (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). Weryszko&#150;Chmielewska &amp; Piotrowska (2004), registraron en Lublin (Polonia) periodos principales de polinizaci&oacute;n con duraci&oacute;n ente 17 y 28 d&iacute;as (2001 y 2002) y con concentraciones m&aacute;ximas entre 143 y 287 granos/m<sup>3</sup>. De acuerdo a diversos estudios se considera que la media diaria &gt;150 granos/m<sup>3</sup> es una concentraci&oacute;n cr&iacute;tica para la aparici&oacute;n de s&iacute;ntomas al&eacute;rgicos, valores similares y superiores a la concentraci&oacute;n mencionada anteriormente son alcanzadas en el AMM durante 28 d&iacute;as. La presencia en la atm&oacute;sfera del polen del fresno ha sido citada en Francia, Hungr&iacute;a, Argentina, Espa&ntilde;a y Suiza, adem&aacute;s es considerado como uno de los principales p&oacute;lenes causantes de alergias, principalmente asma (Gatusso <i>et al., </i>2003; Jarai&#150;Koml&oacute;di &amp; Juhasz, 1993; Laurent <i>et al., </i>1998; Nitiu &amp; Mallo, 2002; Peeters, 2000). En Suiza este polen hab&iacute;a sido caracterizado por largo tiempo como un al&eacute;rgeno secundario, sin embargo a partir de 1991 est&aacute; incluido en la lista de los principales al&eacute;rgenos junto con Poaceae y Artemisia (Peeters, 2000).</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Moraceae </b>(<a href="#f3">Fig. 3g</a>). En este tipo pol&iacute;nico se incluyen las especies de <i>Morus nigra, M. alba, M. rubra </i>(mora) y <i>Broussonetia papyrifera </i>(morera de papel) registradas para el &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey (Rocha&#150;Estrada <i>et al.</i>, 1998; Alan&iacute;s&#150;Flores &amp; Gonz&aacute;lez&#150;Alan&iacute;s, 2002; Cruz&#150;Rubio, 2007). Este polen est&aacute; presente en la atm&oacute;sfera con una concentraci&oacute;n total de 2 799 granos (2.6%), la media diaria m&aacute;xima fue de 154 granos/m<sup>3</sup> registr&aacute;ndose el 24 de marzo del 2004 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). La presencia en la atm&oacute;sfera del g&eacute;nero <i>Morus </i>ha sido reportada en Tulsa (Levetin <i>et al.</i>, 2000 y China (Fang <i>et al., </i>2001), adem&aacute;s es un ejemplo com&uacute;n de granos simples a&eacute;reos en los manuales de Aerobiologia (Ogden <i>et al., </i>1974; Smith, 1984). Con respecto a su alergenicidad se ha descrito hipersensibilidad al polen de <i>M. alba </i>y a la ingesta de su fruto (Armentia <i>et al., </i>1999).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Parietaria pensylvanica</b> </i>(pegajosilla) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3h</a>). Para esta taxa se registr&oacute; un total de 12 354 granos (17.9%), presentando la cantidad m&aacute;xima el mes de marzo, la media diaria m&aacute;xima de 471 granos/m<sup>3</sup>, el 25 de marzo del 2004 (<a href="#f3">Figs. 3i </a>y 5). En el &aacute;rea mediterr&aacute;nea el polen de Urticaceae es una de las primeras causas de polinosis, principalmente ocasionada por <i>Parietaria </i>sp (D'Amato &amp; Licardi, 1994). Ferreiro <i>et al. </i>(1998) en el &aacute;rea de La Coru&ntilde;a reportan a esta taxa con una temporada de marzo a septiembre, llegando a registrarse d&iacute;as pico de 275 granos/m<sup>3</sup> en el mes de abril. Mientras que en G&eacute;nova (Italia) se&ntilde;alan que <i>Parietaria </i>produce grandes cantidades de polen a&eacute;reo, con un promedio 14 324 granos anualmente (Voltolini <i>et al., </i>2000). Los recuentos por encima de 30 granos/m<sup>3 </sup>de aire como media diaria reactivan los s&iacute;ntomas en la mayor&iacute;a de los casos de alergia al polen de Urticaceae, para el AMM este valor se registr&oacute; durante 81 d&iacute;as. Por su parte Corrado&#150;Negrini <i>et al. </i>(1992) reportan que niveles de 10&#150;15 granos/m<sup>3</sup> pueden provocar s&iacute;ntomas al&eacute;rgicos, pero los s&iacute;ntomas m&aacute;s severos se presentan cuando la cantidad de polen excede los 80 granos/m<sup>3 </sup>en la poblaci&oacute;n de G&eacute;nova.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Pinus </b></i><b>sp</b> (pino) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3i</a>). En este tipo se agrupan las especies de <i>Pinus halepensis, P. cembroides, P. greggii, P. eldarica </i>y <i>P</i>. <i>pseudostrobus </i>especies representantes de la flora urbana del &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey (Rocha&#150;Estrada <i>et al., </i>1998; Alan&iacute;s&#150;Flores &amp; Gonz&aacute;lez&#150;Alan&iacute;s, 2002). El polen de <i>Pinus </i>sp est&aacute; presente en el aire del &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey fundamentalmente de febrero a junio, presentando los valores m&aacute;s altos en los meses de abril y mayo. Durante el periodo de estudio se registr&oacute; un total de 2 693 granos (3.9%) y una media diaria m&aacute;xima de 90 granos/m<sup>3</sup> para el 30 de mayo del 2004 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). En un estudio realizado en Tulsa se encontr&oacute; una concentraci&oacute;n anual de 1 246 granos (Levetin <i>et al.</i>, 2000). Jato <i>et al. </i>(2000) estudiaron en la ciudad de Vigo la aeropalinolog&iacute;a de esta taxa, encontrando que el polen de pino constituye el 13 a 20% del total anual, con un largo periodo de polinizaci&oacute;n (mediados de enero a mayo), registr&aacute;ndose concentraciones m&aacute;ximas diarias de 1 105 granos/m<sup>3</sup> en el mes de marzo. La alergia al polen de <i>Pinus </i>ha sido documentada en numerosos estudios (Ant&eacute;para et al., 1994; Subiza et al., 1998; Senna <i>et al., </i>2000; Dvorin <i>et al., </i>2001) encontrando un promedio de 1 &#150;13 % de pacientes sensibles, sin embargo su actividad alerg&eacute;nica es baja y dudosa, pero se sabe que sus alergenos pueden causar reacciones al&eacute;rgicas, como lo demuestra un estudio realizado en Espa&ntilde;a, donde encuentran en pruebas cut&aacute;neas reacciones positivas (Subiza <i>et al., </i>1998). Este g&eacute;nero es uno de los principales alergenos en Santiago de Compostela, durante el invierno. Su nivel m&aacute;ximo es registrado principalmente en diciembre a abril (Aira <i>et al., </i>2001). Por su parte Antepara <i>et al. </i>(1994) encontraron en Bilbao que <i>P. radiata </i>que a pesar de los recuentos masivo en esa zona (6118 granos/m<sup>3</sup>) ofrece resultados de reacciones positivas de tan s&oacute;lo 2.54%.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Platanus occidentalis</b> </i>(&aacute;lamo de r&iacute;o, sicomoro) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3j</a>). Su polen estuvo presente en el AMM durante los meses de febrero a mayo en 2003 y a abril en 2004 (finales de febrero&#150;marzo la mayor cantidad), con un total durante el periodo de estudio de 725 granos (1%) y una media diaria m&aacute;xima de 50 granos/m<sup>3</sup> para el 24 de febrero del 2004 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). El g&eacute;nero <i>Platanus </i>es principalmente anem&oacute;filo (Bricchi <i>et al., </i>2000). Este polen ha sido citado en numerosas ciudades espa&ntilde;olas y europeas como un importante al&eacute;rgeno de primavera (Jato <i>et al., </i>2001). En Ja&eacute;n este polen juega un papel medianamente importante en cuanto a su presencia atmosf&eacute;rica en abril, y aunque s&oacute;lo representa el 0.8% del total de p&oacute;lenes de abril&#150;junio, un 5% de pacientes presentan positividad en las pruebas cut&aacute;neas (Peralta&#150;Prieto, 1998).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Poaceae </b>(<a href="#f3">Fig. 3k</a>). En el AMM se registra durante pr&aacute;cticamente todo el a&ntilde;o, pero los m&aacute;ximos conteos mensuales se producen fundamentalmente en mayo, agosto, septiembre y octubre. Registr&aacute;ndose un total de 4 808 granos (6.9%), una media diaria m&aacute;xima de 33 granos/m<sup>3</sup> el 17 de marzo del 2003 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). Ferreiro <i>et al. </i>(1998) reportan en el &aacute;rea de La Coru&ntilde;a una media diaria de 453 granos/m<sup>3</sup> de aire; mientras que en Toledo se encontraron picos diarios que van de 74 a 462 granos/m<sup>3</sup> de aire (Moral de Gregorio <i>et al., </i>1998). En Europa las gram&iacute;neas son la segunda causa (57%) de alergias, a pesar de ser el neumoal&eacute;rgeno m&aacute;s com&uacute;n y la causa m&aacute;s importante de sensibilizaci&oacute;n al&eacute;rgica (Weeke &amp; Spieskma, 1991). Por otra parte, los recuentos por encima de 50 granos/m<sup>3</sup> de aire como media diaria reactivan los s&iacute;ntomas en la mayor&iacute;a de los casos de alergia al polen de  gram&iacute;neas (Hyde &amp; Adams, 1958; Negrini <i>et al., </i>1992; Valero&#150;Santiago &amp; Picada&#150;Valles, 2002). En un estudio realizado en G&eacute;nova (Italia) encuentran que Poaceae produce grandes cantidades de polen a&eacute;reo, con un promedio de 2 048 granos por a&ntilde;o (Voltolini <i>et al., </i>2000). Las gram&iacute;neas parecen ser por mucho la principal causa de fiebre del heno en el entorno de Madrid, especialmente los meses de mayo&#150;junio, donde se llegan a alcanzar picos de 85 a 546 granos/m<sup>3</sup> (Subiza <i>et al., </i>1998).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Prosopis </b></i><b>sp</b> (mezquite) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3l</a>). Su presencia en el aire ha sido reportada en M&eacute;xico, Caracas y Arabia Saudita e India (Higuera&#150;D&iacute;az, 1975; Hurtado &amp; Alson, 1996; Al&#150;Frahy <i>et al., </i>1999). En nuestro estudio en este tipo pol&iacute;nico se agrupan las especies de <i>P. glandulosa </i>var. <i>glandulosa, P. glandulosa </i>var. <i>torreyana,</i> <i>P. laevigata </i>y <i>P. reptans </i>registradas para el estado de Nuevo Le&oacute;n (Estrada <i>et al., </i>2004). El polen de <i>Prosopis </i>sp se registr&oacute; un total de 1 226 granos, representando el 2%. Su periodo de mayor incidencia en el AMM es de marzo a junio. Su m&aacute;ximo registro diario fue de 45 granos/m<sup>3</sup> el d&iacute;a de 8 de abril del 2003 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). Con respecto a la alergenicidad del polen del mezquite <i>(P. juliflora) </i>ha sido reportado en Estados Unidos (Lucas &amp; Buckley, 1989), Kuwait (Davies, 1969), India (Malik &amp; Singh, 1990; Bhuvaneswari <i>et al., </i>2001; Singh &amp; Kumar; 2003), Sud&aacute;frica (Ordman, 1990) y Arabia Saudita (Al&#150;Frahy <i>et al., </i>1999). Por su parte More <i>et al. </i>(2002) usaron geles (10&#150;20%) para estudiar los alergenos del mezquite en Arizona (USA), encontrando que las prote&iacute;nas del polen de mezquite est&aacute;n entre 59 y 66 kDa.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Quercus </b></i><b>sp</b> (encino) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3m</a>). En este tipo se consideraron las especies de <i>Q. fusiformis, Q. macrocarpa, Q. muhlenbergii, Q. polymorpha, Q. rysophylla, Q. shumardii </i>y <i>Q. virginiana </i>especies registradas para el &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey (Alan&iacute;s&#150;Flores y Gonz&aacute;lez&#150;Alan&iacute;s, 2002; Cruz&#150;Rubio, 2007). El polen de este tax&oacute;n se presenta en el aire desde febrero a junio principalmente, presentando los conteos m&aacute;s altos en el mes de marzo. Durante el periodo estudiado se registr&oacute; un total de 1 360 granos (2%) y una media diaria m&aacute;xima de 42 granos/m<sup>3</sup> para el 10 de marzo del 2004 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). Peralta Prieto (1998) cuantific&oacute; el polen de este mismo g&eacute;nero en Ja&eacute;n, encontrando que las especies que m&aacute;s contribuyen a la carga atmosf&eacute;rica de <i>Quercus </i>son probablemente <i>Q. ilex </i>(encina) y <i>Q. robur </i>(roble), adem&aacute;s encontr&oacute; recuentos atmosf&eacute;ricos elevados (con un pico de 650 granos/m<sup>3 </sup>de aire, 19 de abril de 1995), y con una presencia atmosf&eacute;rica del 8% sobre el total de p&oacute;lenes registrados en primavera y por el contrario, una escasa relevancia alerg&eacute;nica con una prevalencia de pruebas cut&aacute;neas positivas entre la poblaci&oacute;n con polinosis de tan s&oacute;lo el 2%.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i><b>Ricinus communis</b> </i>(ricino, higuerilla) (<a href="#f3">Fig. 3n</a>) el polen de esta especie, perteneciente a la familia Euphorbiaceae. Se registr&oacute; en el &aacute;rea de estudio con un porcentaje de 2.4% frente al total (862 granos) y una media diaria m&aacute;xima de 63 granos/m<sup>3</sup> para el 19 de agosto de 2003 (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4</a>). Garc&iacute;a&#150;Gonz&aacute;lez (1999) realizaron un estudio aerobiol&oacute;gico de este polen en M&aacute;laga (Espa&ntilde;a), describiendo las caracter&iacute;sticas fisicoqu&iacute;micas de sus alergenos m&aacute;s importantes y demostraron la existencia de pacientes sensibles a este polen. Observaron que el polen total anual del ricino nunca excede el 1%, que en las pruebas cut&aacute;neas un 8% (118) de los pacientes mostraron reacci&oacute;n positiva (74 a rinitis, 36 a rinitis y ocho a asma, adem&aacute;s menciona que las prote&iacute;nas est&aacute;n en un rango aproximado de 67&#150;15.5/14.5 kDa.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>CONCLUSIONES</b></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se registr&oacute; una cantidad de polen atmosf&eacute;rico total de 68 962 granos para el &aacute;rea metropolitana de Monterrey en el periodo de marzo del 2003 a febrero del 2005. Los meses de mayor incidencia corresponden a enero, febrero, marzo y abril (meses que sumaron un 50% del total anual en 2004). El valor m&aacute;ximo diario fue de 767 granos/m<sup>3</sup> registrado el d&iacute;a 19 de febrero del 2004. Los principales tipos pol&iacute;nicos de importancia alergol&oacute;gica encontrados para el &aacute;rea de estudio son: <i>Fraxinus </i>sp (20.7%), Cupressaceae&#150;Taxodiaceae (18%), <i>P. pensylvanica </i>(17.9%), Poaceae (6.9%), <i>Celtis </i>sp (4.5%), Moraceae (2.6%), <i>Pinus </i>sp (3.9%), <i>Ambrosia confertiflora </i>(3%), <i>Ricinus communis </i>y el complejo Amaranthaceae&#150;Chenopodiaceae (2.4%), <i>Quercus </i>sp (2%), <i>Prosopis </i>sp (1.7%), <i>Platanus occidentalis </i>(1%) y <i>Carya </i>sp (1%).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Para algunos taxa se han encontrado diferencias entre los a&ntilde;os de estudio, por lo que es necesario realizar futuros estudios de relaci&oacute;n entre el polen atmosf&eacute;rico y la meteorolog&iacute;a para poder explicar estos cambios.
