Éstos pueden ser bioconcentrados en las raíces ya que tienden a ser lipofílicos e hidrofóbicos, y con ello éste puede ser el primer paso en un proceso de remoción con el empleo de plantas. Estos contaminantes una vez inmovilizados en las raíces pueden sufrir cambios estructurales a compuestos menos complejos o hasta derivadosmás simples, como un mecanismo importante para su detoxificación. El presente estudio consideró la evaluación de la actividad enzimática de fenoloxidasas de una especie de pantano Cyperus elegans de los sistemas radicales de plantas in toto y de cultivo de raíces (in vitro) expuestos a fenantreno, un hidrocarburo aromático policíclico considerado como uno de los HAP&#8217;s más tóxicos en el ambiente, con la finalidad de analizar fisiológicamente estos sistemas radicales como posibles herramientas útiles en la remoción y transformación de contaminantes orgánicos. No obstante que la remoción de fenantreno por el sistema radical de C. elegans fue de 32%, se presentó un incremento en la actividad de enzimas radicales inducido por la presencia de éste; las que pudieran estar relacionadas con la separación de un compuesto que pudiera ser producto de la transformación del fenantreno, lo que sugiere que estos sistemas radicales constituyan una fuente de fenoloxidasas que participen directamente en la transformación de compuestos orgánicos, en particular con aromáticos policíclicos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The radical systems may concentrate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, because these compounds are highly lipophilic and hydrophobic, and with it, it can take place the first step involved in a removal process assisted by plants. These contaminants once immobilized on roots can change their structures to simple compounds as an important mechanism for their detoxification. This study evaluated the fenoloxidases activity of the radical system of a swamp species Cyperus elegans, from in toto and in vitro root cultures exposed to phenanthrene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon highly toxic for environment, for the physiological analysis of these radical systems as a useful tools for the removal and transformation of organic contaminants. Although the remotion of phenanthrene by the radical systems of C. elegans was 32%, an increase of the activity of the radical enzymes was induced by the presence of this contaminant and it suggests that these radical systems would be possible sources of phenoloxidases and might participate directly on the transformation oforganic compounds, particularlywith polycyclic aromatics.]]></p></abstract>
