This research aimed to determine the agronomic potential and fruit quality of 29 F5 tomato lines with indeterminate growth habit (IGH) and round fruit, for their possible commercial use and as a source of germplasm for breeding. The 29 lines and the commercial variety Caimán (used as a control) were evaluated in a hydroponic greenhouse system during two growing cycles (2020 and 2021), under a randomized complete block experimental design with three replications. Phenological data, physical and fruit quality traits, and total number and weight of fruits per plant were recorded. An analysis of variance, a comparison of means (Tukey, P &#8804; 0.05) and a Pearson correlation analysis were performed. Significant differences were found among lines in days to flowering and ripening, length, diameter, weight, firmness, soluble solids content, and total number and weight of fruits. Outstanding lines were identified in earliness, yield and fruit quality, making them suitable for fresh consumption. Twenty-eight genotypes showed no significant differences in yield with respect to the control, while line 21136 outperformed it with a 34.9 % higher yield (P &#8804; 0.05), suggesting its potential to be used as a commercial variety or as a source of germplasm in breeding programs.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen En México, el cultivo de jitomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) es de gran importancia económica y social; sin embargo, la generación de variedades nacionales innovadoras es limitada. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar el potencial agronómico y la calidad de fruto de 29 líneas F5 de jitomate de hábito de crecimiento indeterminado (HCI) y fruto tipo bola, para su posible uso comercial y como fuente de germoplasma en el mejoramiento genético. Las 29 líneas y la variedad comercial Caimán (empleada como testigo), se evaluaron en un sistema hidropónico en invernadero durante dos ciclos de cultivo (2020 y 2021), bajo un diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar con tres repeticiones. Se registraron datos fenológicos, características físicas y de calidad de fruto, así como el número y peso total de frutos por planta. Se realizó un análisis de varianza, una comparación de medias (Tukey, P &#8804; 0.05) y un análisis de correlaciones de Pearson. Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre las líneas en días a floración y a madurez, longitud, diámetro, peso, firmeza, contenido de sólidos solubles, número y peso total de frutos. Se identificaron líneas sobresalientes en precocidad, rendimiento y calidad de fruto, lo cual las hace aptas para consumo en fresco. Veintiocho genotipos no mostraron diferencias significativas en rendimiento con respecto al testigo, mientras que la línea 21136 lo superó con 34.9 % más de rendimiento (P &#8804; 0.05), lo que sugiere su potencial para ser utilizada como variedad comercial o como fuente de germoplasma en programas de mejoramiento genético.]]></p></abstract>
