These seeds can be obtained in local markets or in avocado-producing areas located in contrasting agroecological regions without well-defined selection criteria. This work aimed to characterize the morphological variability of 80 seed-donor avocado (Persea americana Mill.) trees for rootstock production in three producing areas of Colombia. Thirty-nine morphological descriptors were evaluated for characterization, including qualitative and quantitative characters of plants, leaves, fruits and seeds. Multiple factorial analysis detected high morphological variability in fruit and seed characteristics in the three avocado-producing zones, while cluster analysis allowed the identification of three fully formed groups, so it was not possible to discriminate groups of trees by area of origin. With the results obtained, it was possible to determine a wide phenotypic divergence in the analyzed seed-donor trees, where 80 % of them presented outstanding physical characteristics of seeds for rootstock production.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La propagación de plantas de aguacate en Colombia se realiza mediante el injerto de materiales comerciales, como &#8216;Hass&#8217;, &#8216;Lorena&#8217;, &#8216;Choquette&#8217;, &#8216;Fuerte&#8217;, &#8216;Reed&#8217;, &#8216;Trinidad&#8217;, entre otros, sobre portainjertos producidos a partir de semilla sexual proveniente de árboles criollos y de &#8216;Hass&#8217;. Estas semillas se pueden obtener en mercados locales o en zonas productoras ubicadas en regiones agroecológicas contrastantes sin tener criterios de selección bien definidos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar la variabilidad morfológica de 80 árboles de aguacate (Persea americana Mill.) donadores de semilla para la producción de portainjertos en tres zonas productoras de Colombia. Para la caracterización se evaluaron 39 descriptores morfológicos, incluyendo caracteres cualitativos y cuantitativos de plantas, hojas, frutos y semillas. Con el análisis factorial múltiple utilizado, se detectó alta variabilidad morfológica en características de frutos y semillas en las tres zonas productoras de aguacate, mientras que el análisis de conglomerados permitió identificar tres grupos plenamente conformados, por lo que no fue posible discriminar grupos de árboles por zona de origen. Con los resultados obtenidos, se logró determinar amplia divergencia fenotípica en los árboles donadores de semilla analizados, donde el 80 % de éstos presentaron características físicas de semillas sobresalientes para la producción de portainjertos.]]></p></abstract>
