Little research has been done on seed drying and physiology. Seed drying is a fundamental process in production technology, and the temperature used can affect its quality. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different drying temperatures on the physical and physiological quality of seeds of four varieties (Tecozautla 04, Diamante, Gema and Manzano Tepetlixpa) in three storage periods. Seeds of each variety were dried in an oven until reaching constant weight at different temperatures: ambient, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 °C; subsequently, they were stored under ambient laboratory conditions for 0, 2 and 4 months. The experimental unit was 5 g of seeds. The study was carried out under a completely randomized experimental design with four replications. Physiological quality was evaluated with standard germination tests, and with the vigor test the germination speed index, total seedling length and seedling dry weight were determined. Seed quality was affected by temperature. When drying from 30 to 35 °C, the seeds expressed their maximum physiological quality, and above 45 °C their quality decreased. Tecozautla 04 had the greatest vigor, whereas Diamante had the least vigor and was the most sensitive to damage during the drying process. After two months of storage, the seeds showed the best physiological quality.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El tomate de cáscara (Physalis ixocarpa Brot. ex Horm.) es ampliamente cultivado en México con semilla no certificada. Se ha desarrollado poca investigación en secado y fisiología de semillas. El secado de semillas es un proceso fundamental en la tecnología de producción, y la temperatura usada puede afectar su calidad. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de diferentes temperaturas de secado sobre la calidad física y fisiológica de semillas de cuatro variedades (Tecozautla 04, Diamante, Gema y Manzano Tepetlixpa) en tres periodos de almacenamiento. Se secaron semillas de cada variedad en una estufa hasta llegar a peso constante con diferentes temperaturas: ambiental, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 y 60 °C; posteriormente, se almacenaron en condiciones ambientales de laboratorio por 0, 2 y 4 meses. La unidad experimental fue 5 g de semillas. El estudio se realizó bajo un diseño experimental completamente al azar con cuatro repeticiones. La calidad fisiológica se evaluó con las pruebas de germinación estándar, y con la prueba de vigor se determinaron el índice de velocidad de germinación, la longitud total y el peso seco de plántulas. La temperatura afectó la calidad de las semillas. En el secado de 30 a 35 °C, las semillas expresaron su máxima calidad fisiológica, y arriba de 45 °C disminuyó su calidad. La variedad Tecozautla 04 tuvo el mayor vigor. Diamante presentó el menor vigor y fue la más sensible a daños en el proceso de secado. A los dos meses de almacenamiento, las semillas expresaron la mejor calidad fisiológica.]]></p></abstract>
