The aim of this study was to evaluate three percentage ratios of Cl-/anions (25/100, 50/100 and 75/100) and three percentage ratios of Na+/cations (25/100, 50/100 and 75/100) in the nutrient solution on mineral composition, dry matter production and yield of tomato. The experimental design was completely randomized with a 32 factorial arrangement and four replications. Analysis of variance and mean comparisons were performed (Tukey, P &#8804; 0.05). Cl and Na concentrations in tomato leaves, stems and fruits increased significantly with increasing ratios of Cl-/anions and Na+/cations in the nutrient solution. The 75/100 Cl-/anions ratio reduced (P &#8804; 0.05) the Ca concentration in leaves, while the 75/100 Na+/cations ratio decreased (P &#8804; 0.05) K concentrations in leaves and stems. Both ratios reduced aerial dry biomass (48 and 25.8 %, respectively) and tomato yield (50.8 and 45.7 %, respectively). The results indicate that tomato plants grown with the 75/100 percentage ratio of Cl-/anions or the 75/100 percentage ratio of Na+/ cations absorb excessive amounts of Cl or Na, which causes ionic imbalance (especially of K+ and Ca2+) and affects dry matter production and yield.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La producción intensiva de jitomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) en zonas costeras de Sinaloa está expuesta a cantidades importantes de Cl y Na, aportadas por la brisa marina y el agua de riego, lo cual afecta el rendimiento de dicha hortaliza. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar tres relaciones porcentuales de Cl-/aniones (25/100, 50/100 y 75/100) y tres relaciones porcentuales de Na+/cationes (25/100, 50/100 y 75/100) en la solución nutritiva sobre la composición mineral, producción de materia seca y el rendimiento de jitomate. El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar con un arreglo factorial 32 y cuatro repeticiones. Se realizaron análisis de varianza y comparaciones de medias (Tukey, P &#8804; 0.05). Las concentraciones de Cl y Na en hojas, tallos y frutos de jitomate aumentaron significativamente al incrementar las relaciones de Cl-/aniones y Na+/cationes en la solución nutritiva. La relación 75/100 de Cl-/aniones redujo (P &#8804; 0.05) la concentración de Ca en hojas, mientras que la relación 75/100 de Na+/cationes disminuyó (P &#8804; 0.05) las concentraciones de K en hojas y tallos. En ambas relaciones se redujo la biomasa seca aérea (48 y 25.8 %, respectivamente) y el rendimiento de jitomate (50.8 y 45.7 %, respectivamente). Los resultados indican que las plantas de jitomate desarrolladas con la relación porcentual 75/100 de Cl-/aniones o la relación porcentual 75/100 de Na+/cationes absorben cantidades excesivas de Cl o Na, lo cual provoca desbalance iónico (especialmente de K+ y Ca2+) y afecta la producción de materia seca y el rendimiento.]]></p></abstract>
