The study objectives were to evaluate the effects of paclobutrazol applications and population densities in the seedbed on the quality of seedlings to be transplanted at 60 das, and on the number of flowers and yield of plants pruned to three clusters. A randomized complete block experimental design was used with a split-plot arrangement with four replicates and 16 treatments that resulted from combining two population densities (150 and 300 seedlings·m-2) and seven paclobutrazol treatments (one, two and three applications with 25 and 50mg·L-1 of active ingredient), plus two controls (without application). The lower density in the seedbed resulted in lower height, larger stem diameter and higher seedling dry weight at 60 das; however, at the end of the growing cycle the number of flowers and the yield per plant were lower. Triple applications of paclobutrazol, with 25 and 50 mg·L-1, significantly decreased height and leaf area, but dry weight and stem thickness were similar to the control. Triple application of paclobutrazol resulted in two flowers and two more fruits per plant compared to the control, possibly because the temporary arrest of vegetative growth, caused by paclobutrazol, left more photoassimilates available for the inflorescences in formation.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El desarrollo de un sistema alternativo de producción de jitomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) bajo invernadero para obtener cuatro ciclos de cultivo anuales requiere retrasar el trasplante de 50 a 60 días después de la siembra (dds). Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron evaluar los efectos de aplicaciones de paclobutrazol y de densidades de población en semillero sobre la calidad de plántulas para su trasplante a los 60 dds, y sobre el número de flores y rendimiento de plantas despuntadas a tres racimos. El diseño experimental fue bloques completos al azar con arreglo de parcelas divididas con cuatro repeticiones y 16 tratamientos que resultaron de combinar dos densidades de población (150 y 300 plántulas·m-2) y siete tratamientos de paclobutrazol (una, dos y tres aplicaciones con 25 y 50 mg·L-1 de ingrediente activo), más dos testigos (sin aplicación). La menor densidad en semillero mostró menor altura, mayor diámetro de tallo y mayor peso seco de plántula a los 60 dds; sin embargo, al final del ciclo de cultivo la cantidad de flores y el rendimiento por planta fueron menores. Las aplicaciones triples de paclobutrazol, con 25 y 50 mg·L-1, disminuyeron significativamente la altura y área foliar, pero el peso seco y el grosor de tallo fueron similares al testigo. La aplicación triple de paclobutrazol resultó en dos flores y dos frutos más por planta respecto del testigo, posiblemente debido a que la detención temporal del crecimiento vegetativo, provocada por el paclobutrazol, dejó más fotoasimilados disponibles para las inflorescencias en formación.]]></p></abstract>
