Koch). Therefore, the aim of this research was to evaluate a single and split application of nitrogen in 'Western Schley' variety pecan, as well as its effect on leaf nutrient concentration, yield and nut quality. A randomized complete block design with six replicates was established. N doses were 100, 150 and 200 kg·ha-1; the single application was made in March and the split one in March and June. The leaf concentration of total N, P, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+, yield (kg·tree-1), quality (nuts per kilogram and kernel percentage) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) were determined. Significant interaction between factors was detected for the Zn2+ concentration and the single applied dose of 200 kg·ha-1. With the single application of 100 kg·ha-1, the highest yield (44.60 kg·tree-1) and nuts per kilogram (194.83) values were recorded, where the kernel percentage remained constant. The maximum NUE was obtained with 100 kg·ha-1 applied in a single and split application (31.10 and 30.10 kg of nuts produced per kg of N applied, respectively). Increased yield and nut quality is the main objective in applying optimal N doses; however, ways of reducing the economic and environmental impact caused by its excessive application should also be sought.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Diversas investigaciones indican que la fertilización nitrogenada es una de las principales limitantes para la obtención de mayores rendimientos y mejor calidad de la nuez en el nogal pecanero (Carya illinoensis [Wangenh] K. Koch). Por ello, el objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la aplicación total y fraccionada de nitrógeno en nogal pecanero variedad &#8216;Western Schley&#8217;, así como su efecto en la concentración de nutrientes foliares, rendimiento y calidad de nuez. Se estableció un diseño de bloques completos al azar con seis repeticiones. Las dosis de N fueron 100, 150 y 200 kg·ha-1; la aplicación total se realizó en marzo y la fraccionada en marzo y junio. Se determinó la concentración foliar de N total, P, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ y Cu2+, el rendimiento (kg·árbol-1), la calidad (nueces por kilogramo y porcentaje de almendra) y la eficiencia de uso del nitrógeno (EUN). Se detectó interacción significativa entre factores para la concentración de Zn2+ y la dosis de 200 kg·ha-1 aplicada en forma total. Con la aplicación total de 100 kg·ha-1 se presentaron los valores más altos de rendimiento (44.60 kg·árbol-1) y nueces por kilogramo (194.83), donde el porcentaje de almendra se mantuvo constante. La máxima EUN se obtuvo con 100 kg·ha-1 aplicados en forma total y parcial (31.10 y 30.10 kg de nuez producida por kg de N aplicado, respectivamente). El incremento del rendimiento y la calidad de nuez son el principal objetivo de aplicar dosis óptimas de N; sin embargo, también se debe buscar reducir el impacto económico y ambiental provocado por su aplicación excesiva.]]></p></abstract>
