After six selection cycles, genetic variance and heritability are likely to have decreased, which could make genetic improvement difficult. The aim of this study was to determine (through heritability [&#293;  2 ], the coefficient of additive genetic variation [CV A] and the additive genetic correlation) whether it is possible to continue with the genetic improvement of the Gema population. Four quantitative traits were studied in 200 families, obtained from the Gema population, under a randomized complete block experimental design with three replications and 22 plants per experimental unit. The CV A ranged from 18.08 to 29.32 %, and the &#293;  2 fluctuated between 32.03 and 44.14 %. The highest &#293;  2 was found in yield per plant, whose 1-&#945; confidence interval for &#293;  2 was estimated to be between 29.2 and 56.3 % (&#945; = 0.05). High, positive and significant additive genetic correlations were found between number of fruits per plant and yield per plant. Therefore, it is possible to obtain significant advances by selection in the Gema variety. The greatest gain could be obtained for yield per plant and number of fruits, with emphasis on the first trait.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La población Gema de tomate de cáscara (Physalis ixocarpa Brot. ex Horm.) es el resultado de la selección hacia fruto muy grande de F1 de la cruza intervarietal de Verde Puebla y CHF1- Chapingo. Después de seis ciclos de selección, es probable que la varianza genética y la heredabilidad se hayan reducido, lo que podría dificultar su mejoramiento genético. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar (a través de la heredabilidad [&#293;  2 ], el coeficiente de variación genética aditiva [CVA] y la correlación genética aditiva) si es posible continuar con el mejoramiento genético de la población Gema. Se estudiaron cuatro caracteres cuantitativos en 200 familias, obtenidas a partir de la población Gema, bajo un diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar con tres repeticiones y 22 plantas por unidad experimental. El CVA varió entre 18.08 y 29.32 %, y la &#293;2 fluctuó entre 32.03 y 44.14 %. La &#293;2 más alta se encontró en rendimiento por planta, cuyo intervalo de confianza 1-&#945; para &#293;2 se estimó entre 29.2 y 56.3 % (&#945; = 0.05). Se encontraron correlaciones genéticas aditivas altas, positivas y significativas entre número de frutos por planta y rendimiento por planta. Por lo tanto, es posible obtener avances significativos por selección en la variedad Gema.
