This variety has been designated as completely self-incompatible by some authors, while others label it as partially self-incompatible. The aim of this study was to determine the degree of self-incompatibility and identify obstacles to self-fertilization in &#8216;Manzanillo&#8217;. For this, in a multivarietal orchard in El Ejido-Almería, Spain (36° 50&#700; NL, 2° 24&#700; WL), a completely randomized experiment was established with four pollination treatments (self-pollination, free-pollination, and cross-pollination with pollen from &#699;Picual&#700; and &#699;Sevillano&#700;). Pollen adhesion and germination, pollen tube growth and fertilization every three days after pollination were evaluated. Analyses showed no differences among treatments in pollen adhesion. The effect of pollination on pollen germination was erratic, because although free-pollination showed more germination than self-pollination at the beginning, the differences disappeared at nine days after anthesis. The clearest self-incompatibility reaction was detected in the growth of the pollen tube, with little and late growth of the pollen tube under self-pollination. The lowest fertilization rate was observed with self-pollination, and the highest with free-pollination.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El cultivar de olivo (Olea europaea L.) &#699;Manzanilla de Sevilla&#700; sufre a menudo déficit de polinización que dificultan la consecución de una productividad alta. Esta variedad ha sido señalada como completamente autoincompatible por algunos autores, mientras que otros la etiquetan como parcialmente autoincompatible. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar el grado de autoincompatibilidad e identificar el obstáculo a la autofecundación en &#8216;Manzanilla de Sevilla&#700;. Para ello, en un huerto multivarietal en El Ejido-Almería, España (36° 50&#700; latitud norte y 2° 24&#700; longitud oeste) se estableció un experimento completamente al azar con cuatro tratamientos de polinización (autopolinización, polinización libre, y polinización cruzada con polen de &#699;Picual&#700; y de &#699;Gordal Sevillana&#700;), y se evaluó la adhesión y germinación del polen, el crecimiento del tubo polínico y la fecundación cada tres días después de la polinización. Los análisis mostraron ausencia de diferencias entre tratamientos en cuanto a la adhesión del polen. El efecto de la polinización sobre la germinación del polen fue errático, pues, aunque la polinización libre mostró mayor germinación que la autopolinización al inicio, las diferencias desaparecieron a los nueve días. La reacción de autoincompatibilidad más clara se detectó en el crecimiento del tubo polínico, apreciándose un crecimiento escaso y tardío del tubo polínico bajo autopolinización. La tasa de fecundación más baja se observó con la autopolinización, y la más alta con polinización libre.]]></p></abstract>
