This research sought to evaluate the genetic variation in 55 collections of native tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) from nine states of Mexico, through their morphological and molecular characterization, and to create a strategy for their sustainable and efficient conservation. The collections were characterized morphologically under greenhouse conditions based on 62 descriptors used by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). Molecular characterization was performed using ISSR markers with 16 primers, which generated 118 amplified products, of which 81 allowed differentiating collections (68.7 % polymorphism). Multivariate analysis detected three groups based on morphological descriptors of leaves, flowers, stem and fruit, while the molecular characterization generated seven groups, coinciding by only 26.5 %. The origins of the collections had no association with the clusters. The presence of significant genetic variability in the native tomatoes was detected, so it is concluded that within the groups generated it is possible to identify materials with traits of interest for breeding. On the other hand, sustainable conservation of this genetic variability in seedbanks may be more efficient by requiring the safeguarding of 67 % of the collections studied.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Reconocer a las poblaciones nativas como reservorios genéticos obliga a su conservación, especialmente al referirse a caracteres que son de interés para el mejoramiento de nuevos cultivares y a la escasa variación genética presente en las actuales variedades comerciales. La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo evaluar la variación genética de 55 colectas de tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) nativo, provenientes de nueve estados de la República Mexicana, a través de su caracterización morfológica y molecular, y generar una estrategia para su conservación sustentable y eficiente. El cultivo se caracterizó morfológicamente en condiciones de invernadero con base en 62 descriptores del International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). La caracterización molecular se realizó mediante marcadores ISSR&#8217;s con 16 iniciadores; éstos generaron 118 productos amplificados, de los cuales 81 permitieron diferenciar colectas (68.7 % de polimorfismo). Análisis multivariados detectaron tres grupos con base en descriptores morfológicos de hojas, flores, tallo y fruto; en tanto que la caracterización molecular generó siete grupos, los cuales coincidieron únicamente 26.5 %. Los orígenes de las colectas no tuvieron asociación con las agrupaciones. Se detectó la presencia de variabilidad genética apreciable en los tomates nativos, por lo que se considera que dentro de los grupos generados es posible identificar materiales con caracteres de interés para el mejoramiento genético. Por otra parte, la conservación sustentable de esta variabilidad genética en bancos de germoplasma podrá ser más eficiente al necesitar el resguardo de 67 % de las colectas estudiadas.]]></p></abstract>
