Sin embargo, el valor de los sitios geotérmicos y sus manifestaciones -incluyendo una amplia (geo)diversidad de geoformas y depósitos hidrotermales, como: géiseres, manantiales termales, fumarolas, solfataras, y sínters- trasciende los meros intereses económicos, abarcando dimensiones culturales y ecológicas. Son lugares ricos en mitos, leyendas y prácticas ancestrales, que conectan a las comunidades con su pasado y con la Tierra, y fortalecen su identidad. Además, los sitios geotérmicos son espacios ideales para la educación ambiental y científica, donde el público visitante puede acercarse a los procesos geológicos activos a través de una vivencia sensorial y aprender la importancia de la geotermia como fuente renovable de energía. Estos sitios deben ser gestionados de tal manera que la conservación sea compatible con su aprovechamiento sostenible, para lo cual es necesario identificar, antes de emprender cualquier proyecto de explotación, sus valores naturales (ecológicos y geológicos) y culturales (tangibles e intangibles). Su protección exige un marco jurídico holístico que reconozca, valore y armonice su importancia económica, cultural y científica. En este contexto, el geoturismo se presenta como una alternativa económica sostenible, capaz de conciliar la protección de estos espacios de geodiversidad y significación cultural con el desarrollo económico de las comunidades, promoviendo una interacción respetuosa y enriquecedora de las personas con su entorno.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In addition to being sources of renewable energy and minerals, geothermal sites are a tourist resource traditionally utilized for balneology. However, the value of geothermal sites and their manifestations -including a wide (geo)diversity of landforms and hydrothermal deposits, such as geysers, hot springs, fumaroles, solfataras, and sinters- goes beyond mere economic interests, encompassing cultural and ecological dimensions. These are places rich in myths, legends, and ancestral practices that connect communities to their past and to the Earth, strengthening their identity. Furthermore, geothermal sites are ideal spaces for environmental and scientific education, where visitors can engage with active geological processes through a sensory experience and learn about the importance of geothermal energy as a renewable resource. These sites must be managed in such a way that conservation is compatible with their sustainable use. For this purpose, it is essential to identify their natural (ecological and geological) and cultural (tangible and intangible) values before undertaking any exploitation projects. Their protection requires a holistic legal framework that recognizes, values, and harmonizes their economic, cultural, and scientific importance. In this context, geotourism emerges as a sustainable economic alternative, capable of reconciling the protection of these spaces of geodiversity and cultural significance with the economic development of local communities. This promotes a respectful and enriching interaction between people and their natural environment.]]></p></abstract>
