Sus sedimentos conservan la historia de los cambios ambientales ocurridos durante el Cuaternario tardío. Entre 2016 y 2018 se colectaron un conjunto de núcleos de sedimentos lacustres en la subcuenca de Xochimilco, ubicada al sur de la cuenca de México. A partir de esas sucesiones sedimentarias se construyó una secuencia maestra que representa los 66.5 m superiores de los depósitos lacustres. Para el establecimiento de su columna estratigráfica, se definieron 15 litotipos a partir de sus componentes sedimentarios en los que dominan los componentes clásticos constituidos por silicatos, en su mayor parte de tamaño limo y arcilla. La fracción biogénica más abundante son diatomeas que con frecuencia forman oozes, y los ostrácodos son un componente común en la mayor parte de la secuencia, los cuales localmente forman lumaquelas. Intercalados con los litotipos clásticos y biogénicos se encuentran depósitos volcaniclásticos. Se definieron 8 unidades litológicas con base en sus litotipos dominantes. La escala temporal de la secuencia es aún incierta para los sedimentos más antiguos; sin embargo, se estima que ésta abarca los últimos 300000 a 350000 años. A partir de esta temporalidad se infieren oscilaciones ambientales de escalas milenarias. Los sedimentos laminados ricos en diatomeas representan las fases de mayor profundidad en el lago, que coinciden cercanamente con etapas glaciales. Los depósitos con mayor cantidad de componentes calcáreos biogénicos y autigénicos señalan las fases de mayor concentración iónica durante las cuales el lago fue más somero, y en general coinciden con épocas interglaciales. El análisis detallado de la estratigrafía y la descripción de los componentes sedimentarios en Xochimilco permiten establecer una interpretación inicial de las variaciones en los ambientes de depósito, y proporcionan la base a partir de la cual se apoyarán los estudios detallados de indicadores paleoclimáticos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The lacustrine system developed in the basin of Mexico has been of great interest in studies of various geological and social disciplines. Its sediments preserve the history of the environmental changes that occurred during the late Quaternary. Between 2016 and 2018, a set of lacustrine sediment cores were collected in the Xochimilco sub-basin, located south of the basin of Mexico. From these sedimentary sequences, a master sequence was constructed that represents the upper 66.5 m of the lacustrine deposits. For the establishment of its stratigraphic column, 15 lithotypes were defined from their sedimentary components in which the clastic components made up of silicates dominate, mostly silt and clay in size. The most abundant biogenic fraction is diatoms that frequently form oozes, and ostracods are a common component in most of the sequence, which locally form hashes. Interbedded with the clastic and biogenic lithotypes are volcaniclastic deposits. Eight lithological units were defined based on their dominant lithotypes. The time scale of the sequence is still uncertain for the oldest sediments; however, it is estimated that it covers the last 300000 to 350000 years. From this temporality, environmental oscillations of millennial scales are inferred. Diatom-rich laminated sediments represent the deepest phases in the lake. The deposits with higher biogenic and authigenic calcareous components indicate the phases of higher ionic concentration during which the lake was shallower. The detailed analysis of the stratigraphy and the description of the sedimentary components in Xochimilco allows to establish an initial interpretation of the variations in the depositional environments, and provides the base from which the detailed studies of paleoclimatic indicators will be supported.]]></p></abstract>
