Six types of biomorphic structures were found and interpreted as coccoids (type 1), stomatocysts (types 2 and 3), pollen (types 4 and 5) and tubular structures corresponding to bacterial sheaths (type 6). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis revealed iron and sulfur within the analyzed structures, indicating that they were replaced by pyrite. Furthermore, the high content of elemental carbon in the biostructures, in contrast to the surrounding pyrite in which this element is absent, suggests that the biostructures are of biotic origin. The coccoids and tubular elements were interpreted as autochthonous bacterial fossils or remains of bacterial activity associated with pyrite formation. In contrast, the stomatocysts and pollen represent allochthonous elements imported from continental areas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El propósito de este trabajo es proveer una descripción de estructuras biomórficas encontradas en pirita sedimentaria presente en caliza marina rica en carbono orgánico de la Formación Agua Nueva (Cenomaniano Superior, Cretácico Superior), México Central, mediante imágenes de microscopio electrónico de barrido. Seis tipos de estructuras biomórficas fueron encontradas e interpretadas como cocoides (tipo 1), estomatoquistes (tipo 2 y 3), polen (tipo 4 y 5) y estructuras tubulares interpretadas como vainas bacterianas (tipo 6). El análisis de espectroscopia de rayos X por energía dispersiva reveló la presencia de hierro y azufre dentro de las estructuras analizadas, indicando que fueron reemplazadas por pirita. Además, un alto contenido de carbono elemental fue detectado sólo en las bioestructuras, en contraste con la pirita circundante en donde este elemento está ausente, lo que podría sugerir el origen biótico de las bioformas. Estructuras cocoides y tubulares fueron interpretadas como fósiles bacterianos, que representan fósiles autóctonos asociados con la formación de pirita, mientras que los estomatoquistes y el polen representan elementos alóctonos probablemente importados de áreas continentales.]]></p></abstract>
