<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S1026-87742015000300501&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S1026-87742015000300501&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S1026-87742015000300501&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Se realizó una evaluación del aumento magnético en muestras recolectadas del polvo urbano asentado sobre diferentes superficies, principalmente vialidades pavimentadas y no pavimentadas, como una estrategia de aproximación indirecta al problema de contaminación ambiental en la ciudad de Mexicali (ciudad de tamaño medio en la frontera México-EE. UU.). Técnicas de magnetismo de rocas han sido usadas para analizar la concentración relativa de minerales magnéticos en las diferentes muestras, a partir de la determinación de los valores de susceptibilidad magnética específica de masa y magnetización remanente isotérmica para un pulso magnético de 0.7 T. Se calculó el aumento magnético mediante la comparación de la concentración magnética de cada muestra con respecto a la concentración magnética de una muestra seleccionada como control o testigo, recolectada de un sitio ubicado en la periferia de la ciudad con leve actividad humana, categorizado como área de conservación. Otros parámetros magnéticos como el cociente S-200 y la temperatura de Curie fueron usados para identificar el tipo de portador magnético predominante, determinando que la magnetita impura es el mineral magnético más abundante en la mayoría de las muestras recolectadas. Técnicas de análisis geoestadístico y de interpolación (variograma experimental y Kriging ordinario, respectivamente) fueron utilizadas para determinar la distribución espacial del aumento magnético, permitiendo zonificar la ciudad por niveles de contaminación ambiental. Vialidades de alto tráfico vehicular en combinación con las categorías de uso de suelo Industrial Corredor Urbano Comercio y Servicios son los rasgos sobresalientes de las zonas identificadas con el nivel más alto de contaminación.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Assessments of magnetic enhancement on urban dust samples collected on different surfaces, mostly paved and unpaved roads, were performed in order to evaluate the environmental contamination in Mexicali (medium-sized city on the Mexico-USA border). Rock and mineral magnetic techniques consisted of systematic measurements of mass-specific magnetic susceptibility and isothermal remanent magnetization at 0.7 T. Magnetic enhancement was estimated by comparing magnetic concentration for each sample relative to reference value obtained from the site with almost no human activity also known as conservation area in the suburb of town. Additional magnetic parameters as the S-200 ratio and Curie temperatures were used to identify predominant magnetic carriers. These experiments indicate that impure magnetic is the main mineral in most studied samples. Geostatistical analysis and interpolation techniques (experimental variogram and ordinary Kriging, respectively) were carried out in order to determine the spatial distribution of magnetic enhancement and relative levels of environmental contamination. High traffic roads with industrial areas as well as some land categories yielded unusually high level of contamination.]]></p></abstract>
