METODOLOGÍA: La búsqueda de la información se llevó a cabo en cuatro bases de datos (Pubmed-Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library, LILACS) para identificar estudios referentes a la repercusión de la COVID-19 en las actividades de detección oportuna de cáncer de mama con hincapié en el menoscabo que sufrieron. Se incluyeron revisiones sistemáticas y ensayos clínicos aleatorizados, controlados, escritos en español, inglés o portugués, publicados entre enero del 2020 y agosto del 2023. En la búsqueda de información se emplearon los términos de vocabulario controlado DeCS y MeSH en las distintas interfaces. Se encontraron 113 artículos, de los que 10 cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. Se utilizó un enfoque descriptivo y narrativo para exponer los resultados de la búsqueda.  RESULTADOS: Para la revisión se incluyeron 10 estudios, dos de ellos con un sesgo importante. La reducción en el volumen de las mastografías de tamizaje fue mayor del 40% en más de la mitad de los estudios. Lo anterior, desde la declaratoria de la emergencia sanitaria hasta diciembre del 2020. Sin embargo, al considerar el periodo más crítico de la pandemia, que fue de abril a junio, el déficit registrado fue del 70%. En algunos artículos se reporta la tasa de población estudiada, lo que es importante conocer dado que los países de América Latina responden a un tamizaje oportunista. En este sentido, vale la pena destacar que todos los datos reportados en esta comunicación son &#8220;relativos&#8221;.  CONCLUSIONES: Fue evidente la reducción importante en las actividades de detección oportuna del cáncer de mama en México, Brasil, Uruguay, Perú y Argentina. Sin embargo, los datos reunidos tienen varias limitantes referentes a la calidad de los estudios, la tasa de población reportada y los periodos analizados. Es necesario ampliar la información de lo ocurrido con la detección oportuna de esta neoplasia en el periodo de la pandemia, con el fin de generar rutas críticas para atender su alta prevalencia que, de acuerdo con la bibliografía se acentuará como consecuencia de la COVID-19.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  OBJECTIVE: To present and describe the effects of COVID-19 on breast cancer screening in Latin America, and to propose an alternative solution to address the delays in timely breast cancer detection in the region.  METHODOLOGY: A search for information was conducted on four databases [Pubmed/Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library, LILACS] to identify studies on the impact of COVID-19 on timely breast cancer detection activities, with a focus on the detriment suffered by these activities. Systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials written in Spanish, English, or Portuguese, published between January 2020 and August 2023, were included. The search employed DeCS and MeSH controlled vocabulary terms in various interfaces, yielding 113 articles, of which 10 met the inclusion criteria. A descriptive and narrative approach was used to present the search results.  RESULTS: Ten studies were included in this narrative review, with two exhibiting high bias. A reduction in breast cancer screening volumes of over 40% was detected in more than half of the studies, from the declaration of the health emergency until December 2020. However, during the peak period of the pandemic, from April to June, the recorded deficit reached 70%. Some articles reported the population studied rate, a crucial aspect given that Latin American countries follow an opportunistic screening approach, making the obtained data "relative."  CONCLUSIONS: Evidence is presented regarding a significant reduction in timely breast cancer detection activities in Latin America. However, these findings stem from short periods and opportunistic breast cancer screening programs. It is essential to expand the information on timely breast cancer detection during the pandemic to obtain reliable evidence of the impact left in this regard.]]></p></abstract>
