MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS:  Estudio descriptivo, prospectivo y observacional efectuado entre 2014 y 2016 mediante el levantamiento de encuestas en diferentes ciudades del estado de Chihuahua. Criterios de inclusión: mujeres residentes en el estado de Chihuahua, mayores de 18 años. Variables de estudio: conocimientos y antecedentes de la autoexploración, examen clínico y mamografía.  RESULTADOS: Se encuestaron 3040 mujeres: 30% nunca se habían efectuado la autoexploración, solo 15% lo hace cada mes. El 44% de las mayores de 25 años nunca se habían practicado un examen clínico mamario, 56% lo hacía correctamente. A 28% nunca les habían realizado una mastografía y solo 38% tuvieron un tamizaje mastográfico adecuado.  CONCLUSIONES: Los resultados muestran el desconocimiento persistente en las mujeres del estado de Chihuahua en relación con la importancia de la autoexploración, el examen clínico y la mamografía como medios de prevención del cáncer de mama. Es necesario que el sector salud (público y privado) continúe con campañas que exhorten a las mujeres mayores de 40 años a practicarse la mastografía como recurso indispensable de tamizaje. Es decisivo estandarizar los procesos y acreditar los centros que practican esos estudios, además de fortalecer los sistemas de referencia y contrarreferencia para que la paciente llegue en forma rápida a los hospitales de segundo o tercer nivel.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  OBJECTIVE: To determine the percentage of women who are screened for breast cancer.  MATERIALS AND METHODS: Descriptive, prospective and observational study carried out between 2014 and 2016 by means of surveys in different cities of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Inclusion criteria: women residing in the state of Chihuahua, over 18 years of age. Study variables: knowledge and history of self-exploration, clinical examination, and mammography.  RESULTS: 3040 women were surveyed: 30% had never done self-examination, only 15% did it every month. 44% of women over 25 years of age had never had a clinical breast exam, 56% did it correctly. 28% had never had a mastography and only 38% had a screening.  CONCLUSIONS: The results show the persistent lack of knowledge among women in the state of Chihuahua regarding the importance of self-examination, clinical examination and mammography as a means of breast cancer prevention. It is necessary for the health sector (public and private) to continue with campaigns that encourage women over 40 years of age to undergo mastography as an indispensable screening resource. It is crucial to standardize the processes and accredit the centers that perform these studies, in addition to strengthening the referral and counter-referral systems so that the patient arrives quickly to the second or third level hospitals.]]></p></abstract>
