Los procesos de diversificación del género están relacionados con la especialización del aparato mandibular, sin embargo existe un escaso número de estudios sobre el sistema digestivo de los peces de la familia Atherinopsidae, entre los cuales se describen someramente aspectos anatómicos del esqueleto mandibular, branquial y hioideo, de la dentición mandibular y faríngea, y de la musculatura visceral.  Objetivos  Se analiza y describe la organización general del sistema digestivo de Chirostoma humboldtianum como parte de su biología básica que revele los procesos de alimentación útiles para su conservación o cultivo.  Métodos  Las descripciones se realizaron por disección a partir de organismos adultos con el propósito de observar, describir e ilustrar el tubo digestivo, el hígado, el esqueleto visceral y la musculatura visceral.  Resultados  Sobresalen caracteres como: la presencia del cartílago interfaríngeo inferior; la amplia expansión del músculo levator operculi sobre la superficie externa del opercular; la presencia de un complejo tendinoso de la sección A1 del músculo adductor mandibulae, que lo relacionan con los huesos lacrimal, maxilar y ánguloarticular; la presencia de una sección adicional del músculo pharyngoclavicularis externus; el origen del músculo retractor dorsalis en las vértebras 2 a 4; la ausencia de estómago; y la presencia de una placa dentaria en cada ceratobranquial 4.  Conclusiones  La organización del sistema digestivo de C. humboldtianum corresponde al patrón anatómico de los Atherinomorpha entre otros caracteres, por la ausencia de estómago; y en particular al de los Atherinopsidae por la organización del esqueleto visceral. Dicha organización y en particular la de la dentición mandibular y faríngea del adulto de C. humboldtianum es característica de un pez carnívoro, que incluye en su dieta a otros teleósteos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background Chirostoma humboldtianum (Valenciennes, 1835) is the first ichthyic species scientifically described in Mexico. Diversification processes of the genus Chirostoma Swaison, 1839 are related to the specialization of its mandibular apparatus; yet few studies exist regarding the digestive system in Atherinopsidae. In particular, the anatomical aspects of its mandibular, branchial, and hyoid skeleton, mandibular and pharyngeal dentition, and visceral musculature are superficially described.  Goals  Analyze and describe the general organization of the digestive system of Chirostoma humboldtianum as part of its basic biology, in order to reveal the feeding processes useful for its conservation or culture.  Methods  Adult specimens, previously fixed with formaldehyde and preserved in ethyl alcohol, were obtained. Their visceral skeleton and musculature and digestive tract were analyzed by dissections.  Results  Major characteristics include presence of lower interpharyngeal cartilage, extensive expansion of levator operculi muscle over external opercular surface; presence of tendinous complex of A1 section of the adductor mandibulae muscle, which relates this section with the lacrimal and anguloarticular bones; presence of an additional section of pharyngoclavicularis externus muscle; insertion of retractor dorsalis muscle in vertebrae 2 to 4, absence of a stomach; and presence of a dental plate in each ceratobranchial 4.  Conclusions  The organization of the digestive system of C. humboldtianum corresponds to the Atherinomorpha anatomic pattern, because of the absence of a stomach, among other characteristics; it particularly corresponds to the Atherinopsidae anatomical pattern due to its visceral skeleton organization. This organization, in particular, of the mandibular and pharyngeal adult dentition is characteristic of a carnivorous fish that includes other teleosts in its diet.]]></p></abstract>
