Objetivos:  Se propuso evaluar la variación genética y su relación con la variación morfológica en las poblaciones de M. cylindrica, describir la posible estructura genética y su distribución haplotípica así como determinar posibles eventos de especiación.  Métodos:  Para 45 individuos de M. cylindrica, procedentes de cinco poblaciones de Campeche, se amplificaron vía PCR las regiones espaciadoras de RuBisCo y de cox2-3 con la finalidad de estimar medidas de diversidad, distancia y estructura genética. Adicionalmente, se realizaron análisis filogenéticos considerando secuencias de especies de la familia Solieriaceae provenientes del GenBank. A partir de 10 especímenes de herbario, se realizó un análisis múltiple de varianza considerando 30 caracteres morfológicos.  Resultados: La región espaciadora de RuBisCo reveló cuatro haplotipos interconectados (R1-R4), así como parámetros moderados de diversidad genética (Hd= 0.46458, &#960;= 0.00785). El análisis filogenético mostró un único grupo monofilético que incluyó a todos los haplotipos. La región espaciadora de cox2-3 expuso nueve haplotipos (C1-C9) estructurados en los grupos GI y GII, así como parámetros elevados de diversidad, diferenciación y distancia genética (Hd=0.81, &#960; =0.06476; &#934;PT, FST&gt;0.35; &gt;10% de diferencias). El análisis filogenético evidenció dos grupos monofiléticos congruentes con GI y GII, mientras que el análisis de varianza mostró homogeneidad morfológica entre las poblaciones.  Conclusiones:  Se sugiere un evento de especiación en curso para M. cylindrica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: Meristotheca cylindrica is a red alga distributed in the Campeche coast, usually misidentified by the morphological variation spectrum exhibited in its populations.  Objectives:  We proposed to evaluate the genetic variation and its relationship with morphological variation in M. cylindrica populations, to describe the possible genetic structure and its haplotypic distribution and to determine possible speciation events.  Methods: We measured genetic variation, distances and structure of 45 individuals of M. cylindrica from five populations of Campeche, using DNA sequences of the spacer regions of RuBisCo and cox2-3. Additionally, phylogenetic analyses were performed considering sequences of Solieriaceae species available in the GenBank. A statistical analysis covering 30 morphological characters was performed on 10 herbarium specimens.  Results: The RuBisCo spacer region revealed four interconnected haplotypes (R1-R4), as well as moderated genetic diversity parameters (Hd= 0.46458, &#960;= 0.00785). Phylogenetic analysis showed a single monophyletic group that included all haplotypes. The cox2-3 spacer region revealed nine haplotypes (C1-C9) structured in the GI and GII groups, as well as elevated parameters of genetic diversity, distances and differentiation (Hd = 0.81, &#960; = 0.06476; &gt;10% of differences; &#934;PT and FST&gt; 0.35).
