Se analizaron en el estudio especímenes de herbario y muestras recolectadas entre 1994 y 2010 en un total de 29 localidades. Se recolectaron cuatro especies: Valonia aegagropila, V. macrophysa, V. ventricosay Ernodesmis verticillata, siendo esta última una nueva adición a la flora de macroalgas del Estado. Para la costa brasileña se documenta por la primera vez talos fértiles de E. verticillata y la presencia de cristales de sílice y carbonato de calcio en las células de los taxones estudiados. Se presentan descripciones, ilustraciones y datos de distribución geográfica para cada especie a lo largo de la costa brasileña, asi como comentarios de otras especies relacionadas. Valonia aegagropila presentó una amplia distribución a lo largo de la costa, V. macrophysa y V. ventricosa, se registraron desde la Bahía de Todos los Santos hasta las Islas Abrolhos, mientras que E. verticillata ocurrió aisladamente en las Islas de Itaparica y Madre de Deus, ambas en la Bahía de Todos los Santos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The present paper included morphological and geographical distribution aspects of the Valoniaceae species occurring in the littoral of Bahía , Brazil. Specimens from vouchers of herbaria and material collected at 29 sites between 1994 and 2010 were analyzed. Four species were identified: Valonia aegagropila, V. macrophysa, V. ventricosa and Ernodesmis verticillata, the latter is a new record for the marine algae of Bahía state. Fertile thalli of E. verticillata and the presence of silica and calcium carbonate crystals into their cells were documented for the first time for the Brazilian coast. Detailed descriptions, illustrations and geographical distribution data for each species through the brazilian coast, as well as, discussion with related taxa are presented. Valonia aegagropila showed a wide distribution, being recorded all along the coast of Bahía, V. macrophysa and V. ventricosa, were recorded from the Todos los Santos Bay to the Abrolhos Archipelago and E. verticillata occurred only on the Itaparica and Madre de Deus Islands, both located in the Todos los Santos Bay.]]></p></abstract>

La familia fue propuesta por K&uuml;tzing (1849) para agrupar g&eacute;neros heterog&eacute;neos caracterizados por tener c&eacute;lulas infladas, incluyendo <i>Valonia</i> C. Agardh, <i>Chamaedoris</i> Montagne, <i>Acrocladus</i> Wilhelm von Nageli y <i>Ascothamnion</i> F.T. K&uuml;tzing (&eacute;ste &uacute;ltimo originalmente descrito como alga, pero actualmente incluido en Bryozoa) y otros cinco g&eacute;neros pertenecientes actualmente a Dasycladales.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La circunscripci&oacute;n de la familia fue ampliada por Wille (1890; 1910) quien reconoci&oacute; cuatro subfamilias (tratadas como tribu): Valonieae (incluyendo los g&eacute;neros <i>Apjohnia</i> W.H. Harvey, <i>Blastophysa</i> J. Reinke, <i>Dictyosphaeria</i> J. Decaisne ex S.F. Endlicher, <i>Halicystis</i> J.E. Areschoug y <i>Valonia),</i> Chaetosiphoneae <i>&#91;Chaetosiphon</i> Jakob ('Jacques') E. Huber), Siphonocladeae <i>(Chamaedoris, Petrosiphon</i> E.C. Howe y <i>Siphonocladus</i> F. Schmitz) y Anadyomeneae <i>(Anadyomene</i> J.V. Lamouroux, <i>Boodlea</i> (G. Dickie) G.R. Murray <i>et</i> Batista De Toni in G. Murray), <i>Microdictyon</i> J. Decaisne, <i>Rhipidiphyllon</i> F. Heydrich y <i>Struvea</i> O.W. Sonder. Posteriormente B&oslash;rgesen (1925), Feldmann (1938), Egerod (1952) y Chapman (1961) redujeron la circunscripci&oacute;n de la familia, incluyendo los g&eacute;neros <i>Dictyosphaeria</i> y <i>Valonia,</i> que se caracterizan por tener talos similares a almohadas, compuestos de c&eacute;lulas infladas y un m&eacute;todo de divisi&oacute;n celular similar. Egerod (1952) consider&oacute; que el modo de la divisi&oacute;n celular lenticular en <i>Valonia</i> es comparable al de <i>Dictyosphaeria,</i> y Olsen &amp; West (1988) bas&aacute;ndose en el tipo de divisi&oacute;n celular lenticular, posicionaron a <i>Valonia, Ernodesmis</i> y <i>Valoniopsis</i> B&oslash;rgesen en Valoniaceae. Esta clasificaci&oacute;n fue seguida por autores como Silva <i>et al.</i> (1996), Littler &amp; Littler (1997, 2000) y Kraft (2007), sin embargo, Sartoni (1992) utiliz&oacute; la morfolog&iacute;a y el tipo de divisi&oacute;n celular para reunir a los g&eacute;neros <i>Dictyosphaeria, Valoniopsis</i> y <i>Valonia</i> en Valoniaceae.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En la familia coexisten tres de los cuatro tipos de divisi&oacute;n celular descritos en Olsen&#150;Stojkovich (1986) y Leliaert <i>et al.</i> (2003): 1) divisi&oacute;n celular lenticular, que se caracteriza por la formaci&oacute;n de un disco c&oacute;ncavo del tabique en el &aacute;pice de la c&eacute;lula madre, el cual se extiende y forma nuevas c&eacute;lulas, 2) divisi&oacute;n celular segregativa modificada, que se produce por divisiones del protoplasto multinucleado, formando cuerpos citoplasm&aacute;ticos que secretan nuevas paredes celulares y amplian y rompen la pared de la c&eacute;lula parental, desarrollando nuevos talos, y 3) divisi&oacute;n por invaginaci&oacute;n centr&iacute;peta de la pared celular, formando los rizoides presentes en algunas especies.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Seg&uacute;n Guiry &amp; Guiry (2010) la familia comprende cuatro g&eacute;neros <i>(Ernodesmis, Petrosiphon, Valonia</i> y <i>Valoniopsis)</i> y 14 especies v&aacute;lidas, incluyendo especies previamente enmarcadas en el g&eacute;nero <i>Ventricaria</i> J.L. Olsen <i>et</i> J.A. West: <i>V. nutrix</i> G.T. Kraft <i>et</i> J.K. Millar y <i>V. ventricosa</i> (J.G. Agardh) J.L. Olsen <i>et</i> J.A. West. Para el Atl&aacute;ntico americano est&aacute;n registrados tres g&eacute;neros <i>(Ernodesmis, Petrosiphon</i> y <i>Valonia)</i> y siete especies (Wynne, 2005), cinco de las cuales ocurren en el litoral brasile&ntilde;o (Oliveira Filho &amp; Ugadim, 1974; 1976; Horta, 2000), aunque s&oacute;lo tres de ellas han sido catalogadas para la costa de Bah&iacute;a (Nunes, 1998).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar las caracter&iacute;sticas utilizadas en la taxonom&iacute;a de Valoniaceae y proporcionar instrumentos para la identificaci&oacute;n de las especies que ocurren en la costa de Bah&iacute;a y, por extensi&oacute;n en la costa de Brasil.</font></p> 	    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font size="2" face="verdana"><b>MATERIALES Y M&Eacute;TODOS</b></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El estado de Bah&iacute;a, situado entre la latitud 08&deg;20'07'' N y 18&deg;20'07'' S y los meridianos 30&deg;20'37'' E y 46&deg; 36'59'' W, abarca el litoral m&aacute;s largo de Brasil con 1,103 kil&oacute;metros, distribuidos en 230 km de costa norte, 200 km de la Bah&iacute;a de Todos los Santos y 673 km de costa sur. Tiene como su limite norte, la desembocadura del rio Real, en el municipio de Jandaira y como limite sur, el Riacho Doce, en el municipio de Mucuri. Presenta una gran variedad de ambientes, tales como playas arenosas, arrecifes de coral, costas rocosas y manglares (Nunes &amp; Guimaraes, 2008).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El material estudiado fue recolectado en 29 playas a lo largo de la costa del estado entre los a&ntilde;os 2005 y 2008, y tambi&eacute;n se efectuaron colectas aisladas durante los a&ntilde;os 1994, 1995 y 2010. Las colectas se realizaron principalmente en la zona intermareal, consistiendo en ejemplares adheridos al sustrato y, a veces en arribazones durante las mareas bajas. Adem&aacute;s se realiz&oacute; el an&aacute;lisis de ejemplares depositados en los herbarios nacionales (ALCB, SP, SPF, RB y RFA; Holmgren &amp; Holmgren, 1998).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Las muestras fueron estudiadas con un estereomicroscopio y un microscopio &oacute;ptico, con ocular microm&eacute;trico y contraste de interferencia (Nomarski). Cabe destacar que las dimensiones (longitud y di&aacute;metro) de los especimenes recolectados, fueron representados por los limites m&eacute;tricos (m&iacute;nimo, promedio entre par&eacute;ntesis, y m&aacute;ximo) para cada estructura, y fueron establecidos a partir de 10 a 20 mediciones realizadas al azar, utilizando una regla milimetrada o el ocular microm&eacute;trico. Las ilustraciones fueron obtenidas mediante la c&aacute;mara digital Sony (Cyber&#150;shot DSC&#150;W7 y DSC&#150;H2) y las fotomicrografias por c&aacute;mara digital Sony (modelo Cyber&#150;shot DSC&#150;W7).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La naturaleza qu&iacute;mica de las inclusiones cristalinas se determin&oacute; mediante pruebas de solubilidad qu&iacute;mica, exponi&eacute;ndolas al &aacute;cido clorhidrico (HCl) 1 N, hipoclorito de sodio (NaClO) al 5%, &aacute;cido ac&eacute;tico (C<sub>2</sub>H<sub>4</sub>O<sub>2</sub>) acuoso al 67% (Yasue, 1969; Leliaert &amp; Coppejans, 2004) y &aacute;cido fluorh&iacute;drico (HF) 40% (modificado de Faegri &amp; Iversen, 1975). La presencia o ausencia de birrefringencia de las inclusiones se evalu&oacute; a trav&eacute;s de un microscopio de contraste de interferencia Nomarski.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Para la taxonom&iacute;a se sigui&oacute; el sistema de clasificaci&oacute;n de Wynne (2005), excepto para el g&eacute;nero <i>Ventricaria</i> que se consider&oacute; sin&oacute;nimo taxon&oacute;mico de <i>Valonia</i> (Kraft, 2007). El material estudiado fue depositado en el Herbario de la Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (HUEFS), Estado de Bah&iacute;a, Brasil.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font size="2" face="verdana"><b>RESULTADOS</b></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font size="2" face="verdana">Se registraron cuatro especies de Valoniaceae, distribuidas en dos g&eacute;neros: <i>Ernodesmis</i> y <i>Valonia. Ernodesmis</i> representa una adici&oacute;n a la flora de macroalgas del Estado de Bah&iacute;a.</font></p> 	    ]]></body>

C&eacute;lulas basales claviformes con constricciones anulares en la base (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f1.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 6</a>), con 0.3 &#150; (05) &#150;0.6 cm de largo y 280 &#150; (438) &#150;540 de di&aacute;metro en la base y 1280 &#150; (1420) &#150;1560 de di&aacute;metro en el &aacute;pice, portando 4 &#150; (7) &#150;11 c&eacute;lulas en la regi&oacute;n apical, dispuestas en verticilos, que miden 0.2 &#150; (0.4) &#150;0.5 cm largo &times; 260 &#150; (337) &#150;460 de di&aacute;metro, pueden originar nuevos verticilos hasta sexto orden, con morfolog&iacute;a y ramificaci&oacute;n similar a la c&eacute;lula madre, pero de menor tama&ntilde;o hacia el &aacute;pice (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f1.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 5</a>). C&eacute;lulas tenaculares presentes en la uni&oacute;n entre la c&eacute;lula madre y c&eacute;lulas hijas (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f1.jpg" target="_blank">Figs. 3, 4</a>). Crecimiento del talo por divisi&oacute;n celular lenticular, en algunas ocasiones por divisi&oacute;n celular segregativa (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f1.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 7</a>); nuevos talos formados a partir de los rizoides de los talos viejos. C&eacute;lulas multinucleadas con numerosos cloroplastos peque&ntilde;os y poligonales, unidas por los extremos para formar una red parietal, un pirenoide por cloroplasto. Inclusiones cristalinas birefringentes de s&iacute;lice, en forma de finas agujas agrupadas, presentes en el cromoplasto (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f1.jpg" target="_blank">Figs. 8, 9</a>). En la costa brasile&ntilde;a <i>E. verticillata</i> presenta una distribuci&oacute;n discontinua, con registros escasos y limitados a los Estados de Cear&aacute;, Para&iacute;ba, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, S&atilde;o Paulo y Santa Catarina (Horta, 2000). Cabe destacar adem&aacute;s que el presente reporte constituye el primer registro de la especie para la costa de Bah&iacute;a, y que existen escasos estudios flor&iacute;sticos que registran la presencia de <i>E. verticillata</i> para la costa Nordeste de Brasil (Kanagawa 1984; Pereira &amp; Accioly 1998).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Comentarios:</b> El g&eacute;nero <i>Ernodesmis</i> fue propuesto por B&oslash;rgesen (1912) a partir de <i>Valonia verticillata</i> que, a diferencia de las especies incluidas en el g&eacute;nero <i>Valonia,</i> tiene constricciones anulares en la base de la c&eacute;lula y ramas verticiladas. <i>Ernodesmis</i> es exclusivamente marino, com&uacute;nmente registrado en el Oc&eacute;ano Atl&aacute;ntico, con algunos registros para el Pac&iacute;fico tropical y el Oc&eacute;ano &Iacute;ndico (Guiry &amp; Guiry, 2010). El material recolectado en la costa de Bah&iacute;a tiene caracter&iacute;sticas generales que coinciden con las descripciones de la bibliograf&iacute;a, sin embargo, las dimensiones de c&eacute;lulas fueron menores que las se&ntilde;aladas en Taylor (1960), Chapman (1961), Papenfuss y Chihara (1975), Schnetter (1978), Littler y Littler (1997; 2000). Tal y como comentan B&oslash;rgesen (1913; 1940), Papenfuss &amp; Chihara (1975) y Kanagawa (1984), en el presente estudio se observaron talos con algunas c&eacute;lulas que presentaban masa citoplasm&aacute;tica de forma irregular, formadas por divisi&oacute;n celular segregativa modificada. Al contrario de lo que ocurre en <i>Siphonocladus</i> y <i>Dictyosphaeria,</i> en <i>Ernodesmis</i> s&oacute;lo parte del protoplasto sufre divisi&oacute;n celular segregativa. C&eacute;lulas tenaculares fueron observadas en las extremidades proximales de las c&eacute;lulas de <i>E. verticillata</i> (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f1.jpg" target="_blank">Figs. 3, 4</a>), coincidiendo con lo se&ntilde;alado por B&oslash;rgesen (1912; 1913), Papenfuss y Chihara (1975) y Leliaert y Coppejans (2007). Estas c&eacute;lulas tenaculares o estructuras similares est&aacute;n presentes en <i>Apjohnia laetevirens</i> W.H. Harvey y en algunas especies de <i>Cladophora,</i> como en <i>C. rugulosa</i> Y. Sakai, <i>C. prolifera</i> (A.W. Roth) F.T. K&uuml;tzing y <i>C. wrightiana</i> W.H. Harvey. Seg&uacute;n Papenfuss &amp; Chihara (1975) la ramificaci&oacute;n en <i>Ernodesmis</i> se origina con la formaci&oacute;n de c&eacute;lulas lenticulares en el &aacute;pice de la c&eacute;lula madre, en la cual se forma un disco c&oacute;ncavo por el alargamiento de la nueva pared celular, produciendo protuberancias que se extienden y forman las nuevas ramas, separadas de la c&eacute;lula madre por una pared c&oacute;ncava persistente. El modo de formaci&oacute;n de las ramas son similares a los de <i>Valoniopsis pachynema</i> (Matthias von Martens) B&oslash;rgesen y otras especies de <i>Valonia.</i> Seg&uacute;n Leliaert <i>et al.</i> (2003), la divisi&oacute;n celular lenticular ha evolucionado con talos formados por c&eacute;lulas infladas, en la que esta divisi&oacute;n ha evolucionado varias veces de forma independiente. Estos autores consideran este tipo de divisi&oacute;n celular como una modificaci&oacute;n de la divisi&oacute;n celular intercalar en talos constituidos de c&eacute;lulas madre infladas, ya que es imposible la invaginaci&oacute;n de la pared celular en c&eacute;lulas de gran di&aacute;metro. Sin embargo, Egerod (1952) la consider&oacute; como un caso especial de la divisi&oacute;n celular segregativa, mientras que Hoek (1984) la consider&oacute; similar a la divisi&oacute;n celular intercalar.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b><i>Valonia aegagropila</i></b> C. Con respecto a la distribuci&oacute;n de <i>V. aegagropila</i> en la costa brasile&ntilde;a, se puede comentar que la especie se distribuye principalmente en aguas c&aacute;lidas, desde el estado de Cear&aacute; hasta Esp&iacute;rito Santo. L&uuml;tzelburg (1922&#150;1923) y Schmidt (1924) reportaron la presencia de <i>V. aegagropila</i> para el litoral de Rio de Janeiro, al parecer el l&iacute;mite sur de distribuci&oacute;n en el Atl&aacute;ntico americano.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Comentarios:</b> <i>Valonia aegagropila</i> es morfol&oacute;gicamente similar a <i>V. utricularis</i> (A.W. Roth) C.A. Agardh, otra especie gregaria que ocurre en Brasil. Las dimensiones de las c&eacute;lulas de ambas especies son muy similares y, con frecuencia se solapan, lo que puede causar errores de identificaci&oacute;n. Sin embargo, ambas especies se distinguen claramente por las siguientes caracter&iacute;sticas: <i>Valonia aegagropila</i> tiene el talo arqueado, densamente agregado, con c&eacute;lulas m&aacute;s delgadas unidas por varias c&eacute;lulas tenaculares, mientras que <i>V. utricularis</i> presenta talo erecto con c&eacute;lulas d&eacute;bilmente unidas entre s&iacute;, formando agregados m&aacute;s laxos que <i>V. aegagropila.</i> Los espec&iacute;menes estudiados se ajustan a las descripciones e ilustraciones presentadas por Egerod (1952), Jaasund (1976), Kanagawa (1984), Leliaert <i>et al.</i> (1998) y Dawes &amp; Mathieson (2008).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b><i>Valonia macrophysa</i></b> K&uuml;tzing (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f23.jpg" target="_blank">Figs. 23&#150;30</a>). C&eacute;lulas claviformes, redondeadas a sub&#150;esf&eacute;ricas, 1 &#150; (1.5) &#150; 2 cm de largo. &times; 0.6 &#150; (0.9) &#150; 1.2 cm de di&aacute;metro, irregularmente ramificadas, septadas en la base (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f23.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 27</a>). Felicini &amp; Perrone, 1994; Felicini <i>et al.</i> 1997; Kim &amp; Klotchkova, 2004 se&ntilde;alaron adem&aacute;s que este tipo de divisi&oacute;n ha sido inducida en c&eacute;lulas seleccionadas por cultivo in vitro, en muchas especies de <i>Valonia.</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En los estudios realizados por Leliaert <i>et al.</i> (2003; 2007), <i>Valonia ventricosa</i> divergi&oacute; de <i>Ventricaria</i> en valores de 0.86%, lo que les llev&oacute; a preguntarse si se justificaba la separaci&oacute;n de ambos g&eacute;neros. Teniendo en cuenta este valor de divergencia gen&eacute;tica obtenido, Kraft (2007) decidi&oacute; considerar a <i>Ventricaria ventricosa</i> como miembro de <i>Valonia,</i> como previamente hab&iacute;a establecido Agardh (1887).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>Valonia ventricosa</i> es una especie f&aacute;cilmente identificable por tener el talo formado por una sola ves&iacute;cula sin ramificaci&oacute;n.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En el material estudiado se observaron talos en el proceso de divisi&oacute;n celular segregativa modificada, con varios cenocitos dentro de la c&eacute;lula madre (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v20n2/a8f31.jpg" target="_blank">Figs. 33, 34, 35</a>).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El material estudiado coincide con las descripciones contenidas en B&oslash;rgesen (1913), Egerod (1952; 1975), Taylor (1960), Chapman (1961), Jaasund (1976), Schnetter (1978), Kanagawa (1984), Sartoni (1992), Littler &amp; Littler (1997; 2000), Leliaert <i>et al.</i> (1998), Pereira &amp; Accioly (1998) y Kraft (2007).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font size="2" face="verdana"><b>DISCUSI&Oacute;N</b></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En el g&eacute;nero <i>Valonia,</i> la presencia de talo unicelular o multicelular, la forma de las c&eacute;lulas, la presencia y tipo de ramificaci&oacute;n y la presencia de c&eacute;lulas tenaculares fueron caracteres importantes para la separaci&oacute;n de las especies.</font></p> 	    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En la especie <i>Ernodesmis verticillata,</i> la presencia de talo recto con constricciones anulares en la base y ramificaci&oacute;n verticilada fueron caracteres importantes para su separaci&oacute;n del resto de las especies.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se documentan por primera vez en Brasil, la presencia de talos f&eacute;rtiles de <i>E. verticillata</i> y tres tipos de inclusiones cristalinas en Valoniaceae: cristales de carbonato de calcio en forma de conos que forman agregados globulares, cristales de s&iacute;lice en forma de agujas finas agrupadas y cristales proteicos no birefringente en forma de tetraedros.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se encontraron inclusiones cristalinas de carbonato de calcio &uacute;nicamente en <i>V. ventricosa;</i> sin embargo Leliaert &amp; Coppejans (2004), las hallaron tambi&eacute;n para <i>V. macrophysa</i>, <i>V. fastigiata</i> W.H. Harvey ex J.G. Agardh y <i>V. utricularis.</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los cristales proteicos se observaron en <i>V. aegagropila</i> y <i>V. ventricosa,</i> aunque Leliaert &amp; Coppejans (2004) las encontraron tambi&eacute;n en <i>V. fastigiata</i> y <i>V. utricularis.</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Part&iacute;culas de s&iacute;lice se observaron tanto en <i>E. verticillata</i> como en <i>V. macrophysa</i> y <i>V. ventricosa.</i> Adem&aacute;s de las especies mencionadas anteriormente, Leliaert &amp; Coppejans (2004) tambi&eacute;n dan a conocer estos cristales en <i>V. aegagropila.</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Seg&uacute;n Leliaert y Coppejans (2004) la aparici&oacute;n de un cierto tipo de cristal en varios ejemplares de una especie indica que dicha presencia no depende del medio ambiente, sugiriendo adem&aacute;s que su desarrollo puede ser controlado gen&eacute;ticamente, y por ende, tiene valor sistem&aacute;tico. Sin embargo, en la costa de Bah&iacute;a, las inclusiones cristalinas no se consideran caracteres taxon&oacute;micos de diagn&oacute;stico para la delimitaci&oacute;n de las especies de Valoniaceae.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Respecto a la distribuci&oacute;n de los taxones en la costa de Bah&iacute;a, <i>Valonia aegagropila</i> mostr&oacute; una amplia distribuci&oacute;n, mientras que <i>V. macrophysa</i> y <i>V. ventricosa</i> se registraron desde la Bah&iacute;a de Todos los Santos hasta el Archipi&eacute;lago de Abrolhos. Por otra parte, <i>Ernodesmis verticillata,</i> se restringe a las islas de Itaparica y Madre de Deus dentro de la Bah&iacute;a de Todos los Santos. El patr&oacute;n de distribuci&oacute;n de las especies de Valoniaceae en el litoral de Bah&iacute;a fue similar al registrado a lo largo de la costa brasile&ntilde;a. <i>Ernodesmis verticillata</i> present&oacute; una distribuci&oacute;n disyunta, y el resto de las especies estudiadas una distribuci&oacute;n m&aacute;s amplia.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font size="2" face="verdana"><b>AGRADECIMIENTOS</b></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font size="2" face="verdana">Se agradece a la Funda&ccedil;&atilde;o de Amparo &aacute; Pesquisa do Estado da Bah&iacute;a (FAPESB) (Proc.
