L-1. Durante este evento se determinó la concentración y el perfil de toxinas paralizantes en moluscos bivalvos (Pinna rugosa, Modiolus capax, Megapitaria squalida, Periglypta multicostata, Dosinia ponderosa y Megapitaria aurantiaca) y en muestras de fitoplancton. También se obtuvieron algunos parámetros físicos y químicos. Los valores promedios de la temperatura superficial y del oxígeno disuelto fueron de 20.9 ± 0.7 °C y 6.9 ± 0.3 mg L-1, respectivamente. Las concentraciones promedios de nitritos, nitratos, amonio, fosfatos y silicatos fueron de 0.22 ± 0.05, 1.04 ± 0.33, 0.89 ± 0.88, 0.81 ± 0.76 y 8.85 ± 1.60 µM, respectivamente. El contenido de toxinas paralizantes en las muestras de arrastres de red variaron de 4.32 a 79.60 ng saxitoxina equivalente filtro-1, identificándose 8 toxinas, siendo la C1 y C2 las dominantes. Las máximas concentraciones de toxinas paralizantes en los moluscos fueron de 31.14, 37.74 y 25.89 µg STXeq. 100 g-1 en M. capax, P. rugosa y M. aurantiaca, respectivamente. Se dan a conocer las variaciones en el perfil de toxinas paralizantes en las diversas especies de moluscos.]]></p></abstract>

<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Key words: </b>Bah&iacute;a de La Paz, <i>Gymnodinium catenatum</i>, mollusks, harmful algae, paralytic toxins.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>INTRODUCCI&Oacute;N</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los florecimientos algales nocivos (FAN) son eventos naturales que en las &uacute;ltimas d&eacute;cadas se han incrementado a nivel mundial en n&uacute;mero, intensidad y distribuci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica (Hallegraeff, 1993; Anderson, 1994; Zingone &amp; Oksfeldt, 2000; Smayda, 2002; Heisler <i>et al.</i>, 2008). Las costas mexicanas no son la excepci&oacute;n, particularmente en el Pac&iacute;fico donde ha habido un mayor registro de estos fen&oacute;menos (Mee <i>et al</i>., 1986; Cort&eacute;s&#150;Altamirano, 1987; Cort&eacute;s&#150;Altamirano &amp; Alonso&#150;Rodr&iacute;guez, 1997; Cort&eacute;s&#150;Altamirano <i>et al</i>., 1999; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2001, 2008). En la Bah&iacute;a de La Paz los FAN m&aacute;s comunes son causadas por el ciliado <i>Myrionecta rubra </i>(Lohmann) Jankowski (Ochoa <i>et al</i>., 1997; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2001, 2004). Sin embargo, tambi&eacute;n se han presentado floraciones de la cianobacteria <i>Oscillatoria erythraea </i>(Ehrenberg) Kützing (Ochoa <i>et al</i>., 1997), de diversas especies de dinoflagelados como <i>Prorocentrum rhathymum </i>A.R. Loeblich III, Sherley <i>et </i>Schmidt, <i>Noctiluca scintillans </i>(Macartney) Kofoid &amp; Swezy, <i>Gonyaulax polygramma </i>F. Stein, <i>Scrippsiella trochoidea </i>(F. Stein) A. R. Loeblich (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga &amp; Mart&iacute;nez&#150;L&oacute;pez, 1997; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2001, 2006a), <i>Cochlodinium polykrikoides </i>Margalef (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2000, 2004; N&uacute;&ntilde;ez&#150;V&aacute;zquez <i>et al</i>., 2003), las diatomeas <i>Eucampia zodiacus, Chaetoceros </i>debilis Cleve, Rhizosolenia debyana H. Peregallo<i>, Pseudo&#150;nitszchia fraudulenta </i>(Cleve) Hasle, <i>Thalassiosira </i>sp. y <i>Chaetoceros </i>sp. (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2001, 2003, 2006a, 2007; Guluarte&#150;Castro &amp; Ba&ntilde;uelos, 2007) y recientemente de la rafidof&iacute;cea <i>Chattonella marina </i>(Subrahmanyan) Hara <i>et </i>Chiahara (Band&#150;Schmidt <i>et al.</i>, 2005b).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>Gymnodinium catenatum </i>Graham, es un dinoflagelado desnudo que produce toxinas paralizantes (saxitoxina y an&aacute;logos) fue descrita a partir de material colectado en el Golfo de California en 1939 (Graham, 1943). Esta especie se ha asociado a intoxicaciones y decesos de humanos por consumo de mariscos en la Bah&iacute;a de Mazatl&aacute;n (Mee <i>et al</i>., 1986) y costas de Oaxaca (Saldate&#150;Casta&ntilde;eda <i>et al</i>., 1991). Se han descrito florecimientos de <i>G. catenatum </i>en las Bah&iacute;as de Acapulco (Licea <i>et al</i>., 1999; Cabrera&#150;Mancilla <i>et al</i>., 2000; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2008), Concepci&oacute;n (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2004) y Manzanillo (Morales&#150;Blake <i>et al</i>., 2000; Zepeda&#150;Esquivel &amp; Meave del Castillo, 2007). En la Bah&iacute;a de La Paz (BAPAZ) <i>G. catenatum </i>se registr&oacute; por primera vez en el 2002 (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al.</i>, 2004). Recientemente se han registrado proliferaciones de esta especie, reportando abundancias en el rango comprendido entre 10,000 c&eacute;l L<sup>&#150;1</sup> y 79,000 c&eacute;l L<sup>&#150;1</sup> (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2006a, 2008, 2009). Este trabajo tiene como objetivo determinar el contenido y el perfil de toxinas paralizantes en seis especies de moluscos bivalvos durante el florecimiento de <i>G. catenatum </i>en la Bah&iacute;a de La Paz, B.C.S.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>MATERIALES Y M&Eacute;TODOS</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La Bah&iacute;a de La Paz es un cuerpo de agua protegido que se encuentra ubicada sobre el margen suroriental de la Pen&iacute;nsula de Baja California entre los 24&deg; 10' y 24&deg; 47' N, y los 110&deg; 20' y 110&deg; 44' O (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8f1.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 1</a>). Con una superficie aproximada de 2,635 km<sup>2 </sup>(Cruz&#150;Orozco <i>et al</i>., 1996). En la mitad noroeste de la bah&iacute;a la profundidad m&aacute;xima es de 400 m y la m&iacute;nima en el sur de 40 m (Cruz&#150;Orozco <i>et al</i>., 1996; P&eacute;rez&#150;Cruz, 2006). Hacia el sur disminuye la profundidad gradualmente formando una suave pendiente y extensas playas (Jim&eacute;nez&#150;Illescas <i>et al</i>., 1997). El clima es seco y semi&#150;c&aacute;lido. La temperatura superficial del mar var&iacute;a de 18 a 31 &deg;C (Cervantes&#150;Duarte <i>et al</i>., 2001; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2009). En verano, los vientos dominantes son del sur con intensidades medias de 2 a 3 m s<sup>&#150;1</sup> (Douglas <i>et al</i>., 1993). Durante el invierno los vientos dominantes son del noroeste y norte, alcanzando en algunas ocasiones intensidades de 4 m s<sup>&#150;1</sup> a 10 m s<sup>&#150;1</sup> (P&eacute;rez, 1988; P&eacute;rez&#150;Cruz, 2006). Esta zona es influenciada por ciclones tropicales durante los meses de septiembre y octubre (Espinoza, 1979; Cervantes&#150;Duarte <i>et al</i>., 2005).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En ocho sitios de la Bah&iacute;a de La Paz (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8f1.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 1</a>), donde se extraen moluscos bivalvos para fines comerciales, se obtuvieron de enero a marzo de 2007 por buceo libre y SCUBA, organismos de seis especies de moluscos para cuantificar su contenido de toxinas paralizantes. Las especies recolectadas fueron: <i>Modiolus capax </i>Conrad, <i>Pinna rugosa </i>Sowerby, <i>Megapitaria squalida </i>Sowerby, <i>Megapitaria aurantiaca </i>Sowerby, <i>Dosinia ponderosa </i>Gray y <i>Periglypta multicostata </i>Sowerby. Para estimar el probable origen de las toxinas de estos bivalvos, se realiz&oacute; un muestreo (7/03/07) para recolectar muestras superficiales de agua de mar con una botella van Dorn, el agua se filtr&oacute; a trav&eacute;s de filtros de fibra de vidrio Whatman GF/F de 0.7 &micro;m para identificar y cuantificar las toxinas paralizantes del fitoplancton. El agua filtrada se uso para el an&aacute;lisis de nutrientes (NO<sub>2</sub><sup>&#150;</sup>, NO<sub>3</sub><sup>&#150;</sup>, NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>, PO<sub>4</sub><sup>3&#150;</sup> y SiO<sub>4</sub><sup>4&#150;</sup>) de acuerdo a Strickland &amp; Parsons (1972) utilizando un auto&#150;analizador de iones de flujo continuo (Lachat Instruments, modelo Quick Chem, serie 8000). Adicionalmente se midi&oacute; la temperatura <i>in situ </i>con un term&oacute;metro de cubeta (Kahlsico Internacional Corp., El Cajon, California) y el ox&iacute;geno disuelto por el m&eacute;todo de Winkler modificado por Strickland &amp; Parsons (1972). A fin de observar los cambios temporales de temperatura superficial, se obtuvieron datos para un punto de la bah&iacute;a (24.45 N, 110.5 E) de enero a abril del 2007 del programa CoastWatch de la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (<a href="http://coastwatch.pfeg.noaa.gov/coastwatch" target="_blank">http://coastwatch.pfeg.noaa.gov/coastwatch</a>). Se recolectaron muestras de botella preserv&aacute;ndose con Lugol &aacute;cido (Throndsen, 1979) y de red (20 &micro;m) para el an&aacute;lisis cuantitativo de fitoplancton de acuerdo a Uterm&ouml;hl (1958). Un arrastre de red de 20 &micro;m de luz de malla se concentr&oacute; en filtros GF/F para el an&aacute;lisis de toxinas paralizantes. Los an&aacute;lisis de toxinas paralizantes se realizaron por cromatograf&iacute;a de l&iacute;quidos de alta resoluci&oacute;n (HPLC&#150;FLD) siguiendo el m&eacute;todo descrito por Hummert <i>et al</i>. (1997), modificado por Yu <i>et al</i>. (1998). El an&aacute;lisis se hace por derivatizaci&oacute;n postcolumna y detecci&oacute;n por fluorescencia en un sistema de cromatograf&iacute;a de fase inversa con un gradiente par i&oacute;nico consistente en las soluciones de &aacute;cido octanosulf&oacute;nico, fosfato de amonio a un pH de 6.9 y acetonitrilo para separar las toxinas. La columna utilizada fue Phenomenex de 5 &micro;m RP&#150;C18 (250 mm x 4.6 mm). Luego de la oxidaci&oacute;n postcolumna con &aacute;cido peri&oacute;dico las toxinas son detectadas por fluorescencia con una excitaci&oacute;n de un haz luminoso de longitud de onda de 330 nm y la emisi&oacute;n a 395 nm.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los moluscos recolectados se mantuvieron en hielo y fueron transportados al laboratorio donde se enjuagaron con agua, se desconcharon y homogeneizaron sus tejidos. Se tomaron dos gramos del homogenizado y se le agregaron 2 mL de &aacute;cido ac&eacute;tico 0.03 N, despu&eacute;s las muestras inmersas en hielo se sonicaron tres veces a 35 kHz en lapsos de 1 min. Posteriormente, se centrifugaron a 10,000 rpm por 15 min a 10 &deg;C, el sobrenadante se filtr&oacute; a trav&eacute;s de un acrodisco (0.45 &micro;m), del extracto 150 &micro;L fueron utilizados para la hidr&oacute;lisis con HCl (1M). Se analizaron 10 &micro;L de ambos extractos (con y sin hidr&oacute;lisis). La identificaci&oacute;n de las toxinas paralizantes se realiz&oacute; por comparaci&oacute;n de los tiempos de retenci&oacute;n de las muestras y por coeluci&oacute;n con los de est&aacute;ndares comerciales: Saxitoxina (STX), neosaxitoxina (NeoSTX), goniautoxinas&#150;1, 4 (GTX 1, 4), decarbamoilsaxitoxina (dcSTX), decarbamoilgoniautoxinas&#150;2, 3 (dcGTX 2, 3) y N&#150;sulfocarbamoil&#150;11&#150;hidroxisulfato (C1, 2), los cuales fueron adquiridos del National Research Council Canada, Halifax, NS, Canad&aacute;.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>RESULTADOS</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Variables ambientales</b>. Las condiciones de la zona de muestreo muestran temperaturas relativamente fr&iacute;as que oscilaron entre 20 y 21.9 &deg;C y bajas concentraciones de nutrientes, los valores de ox&iacute;geno fueron altos (<a href="#t1">tabla 1</a>). Los datos de temperatura para el periodo enero&#150;abril muestran claramente el periodo transitorio invierno&#150;primavera con valores de alrededor de los 20 &deg;C, a principios de febrero, y luego una tendencia a incrementar a 22&#150;24 &deg;C a finales de febrero principios de marzo (<a href="#f2">Fig. 2</a>). La raz&oacute;n molar N:P tambi&eacute;n fue baja con valores entre 1.6 y 3.2 denotando deficiencia en nitr&oacute;geno.</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="t1"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8t1.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f2"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8f2.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Toxinas paralizantes. </b>Los an&aacute;lisis de toxinas en muestras de red mostraron la presencia de toxinas del grupo sulfocarbamoil (toxinas B1, C1 y C2), carbamoil (saxitoxina, neosaxitoxina y goniautoxinas 2 y 3) y decarbamoiladas (decarbamoil&#150;goniautoxina&#150;3). Claramente existi&oacute; una presencia mayor del primer grupo que representaron m&aacute;s del 68% molar en todas las estaciones (<a href="#t2">tabla 2</a>). Es interesante observar el mayor n&uacute;mero de toxinas en las estaciones E1 y E6 con respecto a las otras y la gran variaci&oacute;n en los porcentajes de contribuci&oacute;n de las diversas toxinas entre todas las estaciones. Destaca que en dos estaciones (E1 y E5) las toxinas de mayor potencia, saxitoxina y neosaxitoxina, contribuyeron de manera significativa.</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="t2"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8t2.jpg"></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La toxicidad de los moluscos (<a href="#t3">tabla 3</a>) en ning&uacute;n caso fue superior al se&ntilde;alado por la Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM&#150;129&#150;SSA1&#150;1995) para evitar su consumo (80 &micro;g STXeq 100 g<sup>&#150;1</sup> de tejido). A pesar de no haber analizado la misma especie en cada uno de los lugares durante el evento y de que se muestreo en fechas diferentes se puede resaltar: a) en general baja toxicidad, b) poca variaci&oacute;n en la toxicidad total entre las diversas especies muestreadas en la misma fecha y estaci&oacute;n (<i>ie. </i>Estaci&oacute;n 4), c) baja toxicidad y poca variaci&oacute;n entre las diferentes especies de moluscos a pesar de haberse muestreado en diferentes estaciones (<i>ie. </i>15/03/07) con excepci&oacute;n de <i>M. auriantaca</i>, y d) una tendencia en la toxicidad a disminuir hacia el final del evento.</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="t3"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8t3.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En las <a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8t4.jpg" target="_blank">tablas 4</a> y <a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8t5.jpg" target="_blank">5</a> se muestran los resultados del perfil de toxinas en los diversos moluscos. Claramente se observa que en general existi&oacute; una dominancia de las toxinas tipo C, seguidas del grupo de las toxinas decarbamoil (dcSTX, dcGTX2 y 3). Tambi&eacute;n estuvieron presentes las toxinas decarbamoil particularmente la GTX2 y 3. De este &uacute;ltimo grupo, se observa que la STX y la NeoSTX aunque presentes, su proporci&oacute;n fue baja e irregular. Un an&aacute;lisis agrupando las toxinas de acuerdo al grupo funcional presente en la posici&oacute;n R4 de la mol&eacute;cula (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8f3.jpg" target="_blank">Fig. 3</a>), muestra claramente que existe una relaci&oacute;n negativa entre la presencia de las toxinas carbamoil y las decarbamoil con respecto a las sulfocarbamoil (<a href="#f4">Figs. 4a&#150;b</a> ). La relaci&oacute;n entre los dos primeros grupos no fue significativa (<a href="#f4">Fig. 4c</a>).</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f4"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/hbio/v19n3/a8f4.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>DISCUSI&Oacute;N</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>Gymnodinium catenatum </i>se distribuye en diferentes ecosistemas marinos del mundo (Hallegraeff &amp; Fraga, 1996; Negri <i>et al</i>., 2001; Park <i>et al</i>., 2004; Amorin &amp; Dale, 2006), en M&eacute;xico se han registrado &uacute;nicamente para las costas del Pac&iacute;fico (Mee <i>et al., </i>1986; Cort&eacute;s&#150;Altamirano, 1987; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2005; Hern&aacute;ndez&#150;Becerril <i>et al</i>., 2007; Band&#150;Schmidt <i>et al</i>., 2008). Su amplia tolerancia a la salinidad y temperatura (Band&#150;Schmidt <i>et al</i>., 2004), formaci&oacute;n de quistes (Amorin &amp; Dale, 2006) y diferentes reg&iacute;menes de nutrientes (Smayda, 1977) le han permitido proliferar en diferentes ecosistemas marinos. La hidrograf&iacute;a de la Bah&iacute;a de La Paz, se encuentra regulada por diferentes corrientes marinas y por los vientos del noroeste en invierno y del sureste en el verano (Monreal&#150;G&oacute;mez <i>et al</i>., 2001; Obeso&#150;Nieblas <i>et al</i>., 2004). En invierno&#150;primavera, periodo en el que se realiz&oacute; este trabajo, la temperatura promedio fue de 20.9 &plusmn; 0.5 &deg;C y el ox&iacute;geno fue de 6.9 &plusmn; 0.3 mg L<sup>&#150;1</sup>, valores caracter&iacute;sticos de este periodo anual (De Silva&#150;D&aacute;vila &amp; Palomares&#150;Garc&iacute;a, 2002). En general, la concentraci&oacute;n de los nutrientes y la raz&oacute;n molar N:P fueron bajas, pero se ubican dentro del rango reportado por otros autores para la misma zona (Cervantes&#150;Duarte &amp; Guerrero&#150;God&iacute;nez, 1987; Cervantes&#150;Duarte <i>et al</i>., 2001; Reyes&#150;Salinas, 1999; L&oacute;pez&#150;Cort&eacute;s <i>et al</i>., 2008). Las temperaturas obtenidas en este trabajo muestran claramente que este florecimiento ocurri&oacute; en invierno&#150;primavera y se enmarcan en los valores reportados para diferentes zonas del Pac&iacute;fico Mexicano durante florecimientos masivos de <i>G. catenatum </i>(Mee <i>et al</i>., 1986; Cort&eacute;s&#150;Altamirano &amp; N&uacute;&ntilde;ez&#150;Pasten, 1991; Cort&eacute;s&#150;Altamirano <i>et al</i>., 1999; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2004a, b). Esto sugiere que estas condiciones son adecuadas para el crecimiento de esta especie.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En la Bah&iacute;a de La Paz la frecuencia de los florecimientos algales han aumentado en la &uacute;ltima d&eacute;cada (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2001, 2006a, 2008). Aunque en esta bah&iacute;a <i>G. catenatum </i>ha sido registrada en bajas abundancias: de 160 a 2,600 c&eacute;l. L<sup>&#150;1</sup> en 2002 (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al., </i>2004), de 800 a 1,200 c&eacute;l L<sup>&#150;1</sup> en junio del 2003 (L&oacute;pez&#150;Cort&eacute;s <i>et al</i>., 2006) y de 8,000 a 79,000 c&eacute;l L<sup>&#150;1</sup> en 2008 (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al., </i>2009). En este trabajo, se registra por primera vez una floraci&oacute;n masiva de <i>G. catenatum </i>con una densidad celular elevada (entre 6 x 10<sup>5</sup> y 2.39 x 10<sup>6</sup> c&eacute;l L<sup>&#150;1</sup>), que estuvo asociada a la toxicidad en moluscos bivalvos. El an&aacute;lisis microsc&oacute;pico y toxicol&oacute;gico de las muestras de red demostraron la presencia de <i>G. catenatum </i>como &uacute;nica especie productora de saxitoxina (4.32 &#150; 79.60 ng STXeq filtro<sup>&#150;1</sup>) y sus an&aacute;logos. Dentro de los resultados de G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>. (2004a) de muestras de red para esta Bah&iacute;a encontraron toxinas para el periodo del 2001&#150;2002, aunque en muy bajas concentraciones. Los valores de <i>G. catenatum</i>, sin embargo, tambi&eacute;n fueron menores a las 3,000 c&eacute;l L<sup>&#150;1</sup>. Para Bah&iacute;a Concepci&oacute;n en el Golfo de California reportaron concentraciones de toxinas paralizantes de 5.94 a 90.54 ng STXeq filtro<sup>&#150;1</sup>) para enero&#150;julio del 2002 donde tambi&eacute;n se presentaba <i>G. catenatum </i>(G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al.</i>, 2006b). Los resultados de este trabajo muestran diferencias en los perfiles de toxinas, expresadas como porcentaje molar, provenientes de muestras de red, no obstante que son de la misma regi&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica (<a href="#t2">tabla 2</a>). En la mayor&iacute;a de las estaciones dominan las toxinas de menor toxicidad C1 y C2. En las estaciones E1 y E6, donde se presenta la mayor concentraci&oacute;n de toxinas despu&eacute;s de la C1 y C2 predominaron las toxinas carbamoil y las decarbamoil. Por otra parte, en la E5 &uacute;nicamente se detectaron STX (31.09 %) y la N&#150;sulfocarbamoil C2 (68.91 %) (<a href="#t2">tabla 2</a>). Estas diferencias pueden ser explicadas por la existencia de un posible desfasamiento temporal en el desarrollo del florecimiento en las diferentes zonas muestreadas, lo que implicar&iacute;a el predominio de diferentes estadios de crecimiento celular en cada &aacute;rea. En Bah&iacute;a Concepci&oacute;n, tambi&eacute;n se observaron diferencias en el perfil de toxinas en muestras de red en presencia de <i>G. catenatum </i>(G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2006b), sin embargo, en la mayor&iacute;a de las muestras dominaron las toxinas dcGTX 2&#150;3.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se ha demostrado que el contenido de toxinas var&iacute;a con la fase de crecimiento en cepas de <i>G. catenatum </i>de Bah&iacute;a de La Paz y de Bah&iacute;a de Mazatl&aacute;n, existiendo diferencias en el perfil de toxinas con el origen de la cepa (Band&#150;Schmidt <i>et al</i>., 2006). Es probable que otros factores metab&oacute;licos y/o gen&eacute;ticos puedan ser determinantes en el perfil y composici&oacute;n de las toxinas de <i>G. catenatum</i>. Oshima <i>et al. </i>(1993) asumen que los perfiles de toxinas son una expresi&oacute;n de las enzimas involucradas en la bios&iacute;ntesis de toxinas y que la presencia o ausencia de toxinas es una evidencia de diferencias gen&eacute;ticas entre y dentro de las poblaciones. En general, la presencia de toxinas C1 y C2 es una caracter&iacute;stica com&uacute;n de diversas cepas de <i>G. catenatum </i>(Band&#150;Schmidt <i>et al</i>., 2005a, 2006; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2005). Sin embargo, existen diferencias en el perfil de toxinas entre cepas de distinto origen geogr&aacute;fico. Por ejemplo, las cepas del Pac&iacute;fico Occidental, se caracterizan por un alto porcentaje de toxinas C1&#150;C4 (Negri <i>et al.</i>, 2001). Cepas de Portugal y Espa&ntilde;a presentan un mayor contenido de toxinas B (Anderson <i>et al</i>., 1989; Negri <i>et al</i>., 2001; Camino&#150;Ord&aacute;s <i>et al.</i>, 2004). Cepas de Corea y Singapur presentan un mayor contenido de toxinas GTX2&#150;3 (Park <i>et al</i>., 2004). Es probable que diferencias gen&eacute;ticas deriven en diferentes respuestas fisiol&oacute;gicas hacia la localidad geogr&aacute;fica y que su composici&oacute;n t&oacute;xica est&eacute; gobernada por su carga gen&eacute;tica, hip&oacute;tesis a&uacute;n por comprobar. Otra explicaci&oacute;n pudiera deberse al m&eacute;todo utilizado, ya que el perfil de toxinas en cepas de <i>G. catenatum </i>de Bah&iacute;a Concepci&oacute;n han mostrado diferencias importantes en el perfil de toxinas al utilizar m&eacute;todos diferentes (P&eacute;rez&#150;Linares <i>et al</i>., 2009). La presencia de los derivados como los hidroxiben&#150;zoatos descritos para esta especie (Negri <i>et al</i>., 2007) no pueden descartarse pues el m&eacute;todo que utilizamos no los detecta.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Uno de los mayores impactos nocivos durante los florecimientos de <i>G. catenatum </i>es la transferencia de sus toxinas hacia moluscos bivalvos. Durante el florecimiento masivo de este dinoflagelado t&oacute;xico diversas especies de moluscos bivalvos fueron contaminadas con toxinas paralizantes. Las concentraciones de las toxinas fueron diferentes en cada estaci&oacute;n de recolecta, incluso en organismos de la misma especie. Sin embargo, sus mayores concentraciones (37.74 &micro;g STXeq 100 g<sup>&#150;1</sup>) no rebasaron los l&iacute;mites permisibles de 80 &micro;g STXeq 100 g<sup>&#150;1</sup>, especificados por la NOM&#150;129&#150;SSA&#150;1995 y la regulaci&oacute;n internacional como l&iacute;mites m&aacute;ximos permisibles para el consumo humano (NOM, 1995; FAO, 1995). Los valores de toxinas son mayores a lo reportado para <i>Megapitaria squalida </i>de la Bah&iacute;a de La Paz en el 2002 (G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2004a), donde se present&oacute; una concentraci&oacute;n m&aacute;xima de toxinas paralizantes de 5.46 &micro;g STXeq 100 g<sup>&#150;1</sup> coincidiendo con bajas abundancias de <i>G. catenatum</i>.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Un total de 11 toxinas paralizantes fueron identificadas y cuantificadas en los moluscos analizados. Sus perfiles difieren ampliamente con lo registrado en las muestras de red, aunque coinciden las muestras de fitoplancton y de moluscos en presentar altos porcentajes molares de C1 y C2. G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al. </i>(2004a) identificaron siete toxinas en muestras de red de Bah&iacute;a Concepci&oacute;n, siendo las principales dcGTX2, dcGTX3 y B1, mientras que los porcentajes de C1 y C2 fueron bajos. Estas dos &uacute;ltimas toxinas se registraron con porcentajes altos (&gt;79 % molar) en la almeja <i>M. squalida </i>atribuyendo este hecho a su baja capacidad de biotransformaci&oacute;n. Sin embargo, en el laboratorio se ha demostrado una activa biotransformaci&oacute;n de las C1 y C2 a NeoSXT (P&eacute;rez&#150;Cruz, 2008). Existen varios registros en diversas bah&iacute;as del Golfo de California, donde la presencia de <i>G. catenatum </i>coincide con un alto porcentaje de toxinas C1 y C2 en diversas especies de moluscos (Band&#150;Schmidt <i>et al</i>., 2004; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2004a, b ). Cepas aisladas de <i>G. catenatum </i>del Golfo de California tambi&eacute;n se caracterizan por presentar un mayor porcentaje de toxinas C1 y C2 (Band&#150;Schmidt <i>et al</i>., 2004, 2006; G&aacute;rate&#150;Liz&aacute;rraga <i>et al</i>., 2004, 2005). Es probable que los organismos bivalvos analizados en este trabajo adquirieron las toxinas C1 y C2 al alimentarse de <i>G. catenatum</i>.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Estudios de laboratorio han confirmado que algunas especies de moluscos retienen las toxinas durante diferentes tiempos variando sus tasas de depuraci&oacute;n y cambiando la composici&oacute;n inicial de toxinas. Por ejemplo, la almeja <i>Patinopecten yessoensis </i>durante su depuraci&oacute;n registra una disminuci&oacute;n del grupo de toxinas GTX1&#150;4 y neosaxitoxinas, e incrementa la concentraci&oacute;n de GTX2&#150; 3, saxitoxina, y elimina el grupo O&#150;sulfato (Oshima, 1995; Jaime <i>et al</i>., 2006). Choi <i>et al</i>. (2003), demuestran tambi&eacute;n que los moluscos <i>Chlamy nobilis </i>y el mejill&oacute;n <i>Perna viridis </i>al exponerlas a la toxina N&#150;sulfocarbamoil (C2) ejercen una biotransformaci&oacute;n de esta toxina, encontrando evidencias de la presencia de goniautoxina GTX2 y GTX3, as&iacute; como derivados de la decarbamoil dcGTX2, dcGTX3 y GTX5 derivados todo de la C2, indicando su biotransformaci&oacute;n. Otra probable fuente de transformaci&oacute;n de las toxinas en los moluscos es la actividad enzim&aacute;tica de algunas bacterias (Kodama <i>et al</i>., 1990; Smith <i>et al</i>., 2001), actividad que probablemente influy&oacute; en los resultados de este trabajo.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Nuestros resultados muestran que probablemente estos moluscos bivalvos tienen la capacidad de una hidr&oacute;lisis enzim&aacute;tica para transformar toxinas N&#150;sulfocarbamoil y carbamoil. Una transformaci&oacute;n similar fue observada en la almeja <i>M. squalida </i>bajo condiciones de laboratorio. En dicho estudio P&eacute;rez&#150;Cruz (2008) encontr&oacute; que <i>M. squalida </i>puede transformar toxinas del grupo N&#150;sulfocarbamoil a toxinas carbamoil en poco tiempo. As&iacute; mismo, la transformaci&oacute;n a toxinas decarbamoil, tambi&eacute;n ha sido reportada en otras especies de moluscos (<i>Mactra chi&#150;nensis</i>, <i>Peronidia venulosa</i>, <i>Protothaca staminea, Patinopecten yessoensis</i>, <i>Mytilus edulis</i>, <i>Chlamys nobilis</i>, <i>Perna viridis</i>), y algunas especies de caracoles (Sullivan <i>et al</i>., 1983; Anderson <i>et al</i>., 1989; Oshima <i>et al</i>., 1990; Oshima, 1995; Nagashima <i>et al</i>., 1995; Bravo <i>et al</i>., 1999; Choi <i>et al</i>., 2003). La relaci&oacute;n inversa que muestran las toxinas sulfocarbamoil con respecto a las decarbamoil y carbamoil, en este estudio, apoyan esta biotransformaci&oacute;n.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Todos los moluscos bivalvos analizados presentaron toxinas paralizantes durante el FAN de <i>G. catenatum </i>y por consiguiente pueden actuar como vectores de transferencia dentro de la cadena tr&oacute;fica marina y repercutir en la salud humana. Es probable que en las muestras de red, la falta de un amplio elenco de toxinas como el registrado en cepas aisladas de la Bah&iacute;a de La Paz, se explique por el bajo n&uacute;mero de c&eacute;lulas concentradas en la red de fitoplancton y a los l&iacute;mites de detecci&oacute;n del equipo de cromatograf&iacute;a utilizado. La discrepancia entre el elenco de toxinas de las muestras de red de <i>G. catenatum </i>y la detectada en los moluscos bivalvos indican una biotransformaci&oacute;n por los moluscos bivalvos como ha sido demostrado para otras especies de moluscos (Oshima, 1995; Bricelj &amp; Shumway, 1998; Choi <i>et al</i>., 2003; Jaime <i>et al</i>., 2006). Este es el primer reporte bajo condiciones naturales del perfil de toxinas paralizantes para <i>M. aurantiaca, P. multicostata </i>y <i>D. ponderosa</i>, en el Golfo de California.
