Se determinó un total de 118 especies de algas marinas. De éstas, 69 fueron Rhodophyceae, 20 Phaeophyceae, 18 Chlorophyceae y 11 Cyanophyceae. Las familias mejor representadas fueron Corallinaceae con 17 taxa, Rhodomelaceae con 11, Ceramiaceae con 10, y Sargassaceae y Cladophoraceae con 4 especies cada una. La mayor diversidad se obtuvo en diciembre con 78 especies mientras que en septiembre sólo se recolectaron 39 taxa. De los 118 taxa de algas, 44 son nuevos registros para Puerto Peñasco. Se ubicaron 41 especies epífitas, 10 de ellas corresponden a Cyanophyceae, 22 a Rhodophyceae, 6 a Phaeophyceae y 3 a Chlorophyceae. Se encontró una correlación inversa entre la temperatura y la diversidad de especies. Sin embargo, el número más alto de epífitas se encontró en los meses cálidos de junio y septiembre con 13 y 12 taxa, respectivamente. El número de especies determinado por localidades fue el siguiente: Playa Hermosa con 49; Punta Pelícanos 47, El Malecón 47 y Playa UEP-DICTUS 81. Las especies más comunes en cuanto a su amplia distribución y ocurrencia con respecto al tiempo fueron: Sargassum sinicola Setchell et Gardner var. sinicola; Dictyota flabellata (Collins) Setchell et Gardner; Padina durvillei Bory de Saint Vincent; Cladophora prolifera (Roth) Kützing, Struveopsis robusta (Setchell et Gardner) Rhyne et H. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Benthic marine algae were taken in the intertidal zone from four localities of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico in four samplings dates during 1996 and 1997. A total of 118 species were found. Rhodophyceae was represented by 69 species, Phaeophyceae by 20 species, Chlorophyceae by 18 species and Cyanophyceae by 11 species. El &aacute;rea de estudio, se localiza en la parte norte de Sonora y corresponde al limite sur de la Reserva de la Biosfera del Alto Golfo de California y Delta del R&iacute;o Colorado, creado en 1993 por el Instituto Nacional de Ecolog&iacute;a, &aacute;rea en la cual las fluctuaciones de descargas de agua del R&iacute;o Colorado ha causado dram&aacute;ticos cambios en la salinidad y los nutrientes del agua de mar (&Aacute;lvarez&#45;Borrego <i>et al</i>., 1975; Hern&aacute;ndez&#45;Ayon <i>et al</i>., 1993).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El &aacute;rea de estudio cuenta con varios estudios ficol&oacute;gicos. La primera lista de especies de algas marinas bent&oacute;nicas de Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco se debe a Dawson (1966a), quien incluy&oacute; 152 especies, con base en una colecci&oacute;n que le proporcion&oacute; el Dr. John Poindexter, as&iacute; como colectas obtenidas por estudiantes y personal del Departamento de Bot&aacute;nica de la Universidad de Arizona realizadas en 1940 y una recolecta efectuada por el autor durante abril de 1965 (Dawson, 1966a). Posterior a este trabajo, se encuentran varios estudios con registros de algas marinas para Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco, siendo los m&aacute;s importantes los de Dawson (1966b); Hollenberg &amp; Dawson (1961); Norris (1972); Hollenberg &amp; J.N. Norris (1977); Norris &amp; Johansen (1981); Littler &amp; Littler (1981) y Stewart (1982).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En general la zona norte del Golfo de California presenta una extrema variaci&oacute;n en la temperatura del agua de mar, que va desde 15&deg; C en los meses de diciembre y enero a 29 &deg;C en julio y agosto (&Aacute;lvarez&#45;Borrego, 1983), lo cual propicia en parte el desarrollo de especies estacionales; adem&aacute;s, se caracteriza por presentar una gran diversidad de h&aacute;bitats que incluyen zonas intermareales rocosas amplias, protegidas, expuestas y &aacute;reas arenosas, lo que permite el desarrollo de una flora marina distintiva (Norris, 1975).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En este estudio se examin&oacute; la ocurrencia y distribuci&oacute;n estacional de las algas marinas de Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco, Sonora. As&iacute; mismo, se incluye una lista actualizada desde el punto de vista nomenclatural con los registros previos del &aacute;rea de estudio, con el objeto de comparar los resultados obtenidos en el presente estudio con las investigaciones previamente realizadas en Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Descripci&oacute;n del &aacute;rea de estudio</b></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco se encuentra localizado en la costa noroccidental del estado de Sonora, en la parte norte del Golfo de California entre las coordenadas 31&deg; 19' 33" N y los 113&deg; 36' 41" W y los 31&deg; 17' 36" N y 113&deg; 31' 32" W (Fig. 1). De acuerdo con el sistema clim&aacute;tico de K&ouml;ppen, modificado por Garc&iacute;a (1973), el &aacute;rea de estudio tiene un clima del tipo BWhw (x') (e'), es muy seco semic&aacute;lido con escasas lluvias durante los meses de octubre a diciembre; presenta una precipitaci&oacute;n media anual de 60.1 mm; y su temperatura media anual es de 21.2 &ordm;C. La temperatura m&aacute;xima en los meses de marzo, junio, septiembre y diciembre es de 26.7 &ordm;C, 32.3 &ordm;C, 35.1 &ordm;C y 22.9 &ordm;C, respectivamente. Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco y sus alrededores son notables por poseer, dentro de una corta franja costera, una variada diversidad de h&aacute;bitats para el desarrollo de una flora algal diversa, como son el sustrato rocoso con numerosas pozas intermareales, as&iacute; como puntas rocosas expuestas y protegidas. El r&eacute;gimen de mareas del &aacute;rea de estudio presenta mareas bajas de hasta &#45; 1.5 metros, por lo que algas que se encuentran sumergidas entre 1 y 2 metros pueden ser colectadas durante la marea baja. El material ficol&oacute;gico fue colectado en la zona intermareal de cuatro localidades, las cuales presentan las siguientes caracter&iacute;sticas:</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">1) Punta Pel&iacute;cano: (31&deg; 20' 38" N y 113&deg; 38' 41" W), es una zona expuesta con grandes cantos rodados, agregados rocosos y numerosas pozas intermareales. 2) Playa Hermosa: (31&deg; 19' 33" N y 113&deg; 36' 41" W), presenta hacia el sur una peque&ntilde;a playa semiprotegida arenosa y hacia el norte cantos rodados con grandes agregados rocosos y escasas pozas intermareales. 3) El Malec&oacute;n: (31&deg; 18' 16" N y 113&deg; 33' 10" W), aqu&iacute; existe una playa con una extensa franja rocosa de cantos rodados y numerosas pozas intermareales. 4) Playa UEP&#45;DICTUS: (31&deg; 17' 36" N y 113&deg; 31' 32" W), tiene una extensa franja rocosa de terraza en zona intermareal, con cantos rodados y numerosas pozas intermareales.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>MATERIALES Y M&Eacute;TODOS</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se realizaron 16 recolectas durante junio y diciembre de 1996, y marzo y septiembre de 1997. Los especimenes se recolectaron a mano con ayuda de esp&aacute;tulas y navajas de campo y se fijaron en una soluci&oacute;n de formalina al 5 % en agua de mar. El material ficol&oacute;gico se determin&oacute; usando las obras de Setchell &amp; Gardner (1924); Dawson (1944a, 1944b, 1946, 1950a, 1950b, 1953, 1954, 1960a, 1960b, 1961, 1963a, 1963b, 1966a, 1966 b); Taylor (1945); Hollenberg &amp; Dawson (1961); Hollenberg &amp; Norris (1977); Abbott &amp; Hollenberg (1976); Wynne &amp; Norris (1976) y Norris &amp; Johansen (1981). La actualizaci&oacute;n nomenclatural de los registros previos de Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco se realiz&oacute; con los trabajos de Lewis (1990); Hommersand <i>et al</i>., (1993); Silva <i>et al</i>. (1996), Wynne (1998), Pedroche <i>et al</i>. (2002); Hayden <i>et al</i>. (2003) y Gurgel <i>et al</i>. (2003). La secuencia de la lista flor&iacute;stica va acorde a las clasificaciones de Silva <i>et al</i>. (1996) y Wynne (1998).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El material determinado y herborizado fue depositado en el herbario ENCB de la Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biol&oacute;gicas del IPN y en el herbario CMMEX de la Facultad de Ciencias Marinas perteneciente a la Universidad Aut&oacute;noma de Baja California.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>RESULTADOS Y DISCUSI&Oacute;N</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Flor&iacute;stica</b>: El total de especies determinadas fue de 118, de &eacute;stas 69 especies fueron Rhodophyceae, 20 Phaeophyceae, 18 Chlorophyceae y 11 Cyanophyceae. Se observ&oacute; un claro predominio de las familias Corallinaceae con 17 taxa, Rhodomelaceae con 11, Ceramiaceae 10 y Sargassaceae y Cladophoraceae con 4 taxa cada uno. El n&uacute;mero m&aacute;s alto de especies se obtuvo en diciembre con 78, mientras que en septiembre s&oacute;lo se ubicaron 39 especies.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">De los 187 registros previos para Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v16n1/a5c1.jpg" target="_blank">Tabla 1</a>), 2 de ellos s&oacute;lo se determinaron a g&eacute;nero, por lo que no es posible realizar comparaciones con especies, otros cuatro son sin&oacute;nimos de otras especies y 3 de ellas son considerados registros dudosos y son <i>Codium fragile</i>, <i>Corallina officinalis</i> var. <i>chilensis</i> y <i>Bossiella californica</i> var. <i>californica</i> que son taxa propios de las aguas templadas del Pac&iacute;fico de Baja California; lo que finalmente nos da un total de 178 especies susceptibles de ser comparadas, de este total 108 taxa no fueron ubicados en el presente trabajo (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v16n1/a5c1.jpg" target="_blank">Tabla 1</a> y <a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v16n1/a5c2.jpg" target="_blank">2</a>). Esta situaci&oacute;n puede deberse a varios factores, entre ellos al hecho de que la poblaci&oacute;n humana de Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco se ha incrementado notablemente a partir de 1970, lo cual ha provocado la modificaci&oacute;n de muchos lugares con la construcci&oacute;n de diversas obras como muelles, marinas y puentes. Por lo consiguiente ha aumentado considerablemente la contaminaci&oacute;n por desechos dom&eacute;sticos e industriales. As&iacute; mismo, existen varios trabajos que se han realizado previamente en Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco desde 1966 y nuestros muestreos s&oacute;lo abarcan los a&ntilde;os de 1996 y 1997.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En la <a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v16n1/a5c2.jpg" target="_blank">tabla 2</a> se indican 44 nuevos registros localizados en el presente estudio, de los cuales 11 fueron Cyanophyceae, 19 Rhodophyceae, 5 Phaeophyceae y 9 Chlorophyceae. El n&uacute;mero de especies encontradas en Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco muestran que es menos diversa que la de San Felipe, Baja California en la cual se han citado 153 taxa (Aguilar&#45;Rosas <i>et al</i>., 2000) y es m&aacute;s diversa con respecto al Golfo de Santa Clara, en la cual se registraron 43 especies (Aguilar&#45;Rosas <i>et al</i>., 2002). En contraste, si se comparan los resultados obtenidos con el estudio de Mendoza&#45;Gonz&aacute;lez &amp; Mateo&#45;Cid (1986) donde se citan 133 taxa para Guaymas, Bah&iacute;a Kino e Isla Tibur&oacute;n, Sonora, los resultados son similares entre s&iacute;. Los estudios con los que se comparan los datos obtenidos en este trabajo fueron realizados en la misma &eacute;poca del a&ntilde;o.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Estacionalidad</b>: El Golfo de California ha sido dividido en tres secciones sobre la base de sus diferencias oceanogr&aacute;ficas y clim&aacute;ticas (Roden &amp; Groves, 1959). La mayor&iacute;a de las plantas encontradas (90%) en Puerto Pe&ntilde;asco, corresponden a la flora t&iacute;pica de las secciones norte y central del Golfo de California, especialmente los representantes de las familias Corallinaceae, Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiaceae, Dictyotaceae, Sargassaceae y Cladophoraceae.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Estudios previos en &aacute;reas adyacentes muestran que las condiciones clim&aacute;ticas del Golfo son muy variables y que la temperatura del agua va de 15 &deg;C en diciembre&#45;enero a 29 &deg;C en julio&#45;agosto (&Aacute;lvarez&#45;Borrego <i>et al.</i>, 1975) lo cual incide directamente en la variaci&oacute;n estacional de las algas marinas (Pacheco&#45;Ru&iacute;z &amp; Zertuche&#45;Gonz&aacute;lez, 1996a, 1996b; Mateo&#45;Cid <i>et al</i>., 1993, 2000). Esa estacionalidad se observ&oacute; con una mayor diversidad en diciembre con 78 taxa y menor en septiembre con 39 especies (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v16n1/a5c3.jpg" target="_blank">Tabla 3</a>). La mayor&iacute;a de las plantas desaparecieron durante septiembre y las que se encontraron estaban severamente da&ntilde;adas. Este comportamiento en la variaci&oacute;n estacional de las algas marinas es provocado por el incremento de la temperatura del agua de mar que alcanza hasta 29 &deg;C. Varias especies fueron localizadas s&oacute;lo en una estaci&oacute;n del a&ntilde;o, especialmente en diciembre y junio (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v16n1/a5c3.jpg" target="_blank">Tabla 3</a>). Este patr&oacute;n de estacionalidad corresponde a aquellos previamente observados en el Golfo de California, caracterizados por la amplia variaci&oacute;n de especies encontradas de estaci&oacute;n a estaci&oacute;n (Littler &amp; Littler, 1981, 1984; Espinoza&#45;Avalos, 1993; Aguilar&#45;Rosas <i>et al</i>., 2000; Mateo&#45;Cid <i>et al.</i>, 1993). La correlaci&oacute;n inversa entre la temperatura y la diversidad de especies ha sido considerada un patr&oacute;n com&uacute;n en el Golfo de California (Norris, 1975; McCourt, 1984; Huerta&#45;M&uacute;zquiz &amp; Mendoza&#45;Gonz&aacute;lez, 1985; Pacheco&#45;Ru&iacute;z <i>et al</i>., 1992; Aguilar&#45;Rosas <i>et al</i>., 2000).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Diversidad de las especies</b>: La mayor diversidad de especies se encontr&oacute; en Playa UEP&#45;DICTUS con 81 taxa, y menor diversidad en el resto de los sitos de muestreo, con 49 en Playa Hermosa y 47 en El Malec&oacute;n y en Punta Pel&iacute;cano, respectivamente. En estos sitios dominan los agregados rocosos y las pozas intermareales, y como se sabe los principales h&aacute;bitats en la Pen&iacute;nsula de Baja California y el Golfo de California que son adecuados para el desarrollo de la flora marina son principalmente sustratos rocosos (Dawson, 1966a; Mateo&#45;Cid <i>et al</i>., 2000). En las cuatro localidades de estudio encontramos bien representado este sustrato especialmente en Playa UEP&#45;DICTUS, lo cual favorece el establecimiento y desarrollo de una flora variada como es el caso de algas coralinas articuladas como <i>Amphiroa beauvoisii, A. misakiensis, A. valonioides, A. vanbossea</i> y <i>Corallina vancouveriensis</i> y de algas pardas como <i>Sargassum johnstonii, S. herphorizum, Colpomenia tuberculata, Dictyota flabellata</i> y <i>Padina durvillei</i> (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v16n1/a5c2.jpg" target="_blank">Tabla 2</a>).</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Epifitismo</b>: Se identificaron 41 especies ep&iacute;fitas, de las cuales 10 fueron Cyanophyceae, 22 Rhodophyceae, 6 Phaeophyceae y 3 Chlorophyceae (<a href="/img/revistas/hbio/v16n1/a5c4.jpg" target="_blank">Tabla 4</a>). El n&uacute;mero m&aacute;s alto de ep&iacute;fitas se registr&oacute; en junio (primavera) y septiembre (verano) con 13 y 12 taxa, respectivamente. A pesar de que en estos meses se present&oacute; el menor n&uacute;mero de especies de algas marinas no ep&iacute;fitas, aquellas que estuvieron presentes fueron algas perennes, y la mayor&iacute;a de las ep&iacute;fitas se encontraron frecuentemente creciendo sobre esas algas perennes como <i>Amphiroa beauvoisii, A. misakiensis, A. vanbossea, Corallina, vancouveriensis</i>, adem&aacute;s de <i>Chaetomorpha aerea, Sargassum herphorizum</i> y <i>S. sinicola</i> var. <i>sinicola</i>. Se ha sugerido que la longevidad del hu&eacute;sped debe ser suficientemente grande para permitir al epifito completar su ciclo vital y que esta podr&iacute;a ser una raz&oacute;n probable de la ausencia de ep&iacute;fitas en las algas anuales y ef&iacute;meras (Santelices, 1977). En el caso de las ep&iacute;fitas de la clase Cyanophyceae, &eacute;stas cubr&iacute;an a sus hospederos en m&aacute;s del 90% de los talos, d&aacute;ndoles en ocasiones una coloraci&oacute;n verde&#45;azul. En el caso de las algas Rhodophyceae, &eacute;stas en su mayor&iacute;a fueron peque&ntilde;as, filamentosas, con su ciclo de vida ef&iacute;mero.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El epifit&iacute;smo puede ser considerado como una importante estrategia ecol&oacute;gica, con el fin de obtener un sustrato adecuado para el establecimiento y desarrollo de las especies ep&iacute;fitas.
