</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract Informed explicitly or implicitly by Jeffrey C. Alexander’s theory of the civil sphere, the purpose of this article is twofold. First, it will offer a succinct account of how Viktor Orbán undermined Hungarian democracy. Second, it will examine the lessons learned from this experience by radical right intellectuals and policy formulators in the US who are actively planning to apply them in a substantially different national context. The first section, thus analyzes the construction of an autocracy after the fact, while the second section picks up events in an unfolding narrative. To even raise the prospect of democracy’s demise in the US three decades ago would have appeared to be absurd, and thus locating the current situation in these two nations needs to be contextualized and analyzed in historical context.
</abstract>
