Este estudio evaluó la condición ecológica de las riberas en ocho sitios de muestreo del río Huixtla a través del índice de calidad ecológica de las riberas (RQI, por sus siglas en inglés); además, se determinaron parámetros fisicoquímicos del agua. Las condiciones variaron de muy buenas hasta malas. El sitio S1 fue el de mejor calidad, observándose una franja de vegetación ribereña continua de amplitud y longitud considerable. Los sitios con pobre y mala condición presentaron vegetación ribereña en parches, muros de contención y cauce rectificado, suelo compactado y extracción de arena del río. Estos resultados coinciden con los obtenidos en otros ríos similares que presentan alteración por actividades humanas, como el cambio de uso del suelo, el pastoreo y la rectificación del cauce. Se concluye que las riberas necesitan medidas de restauración para lograr recuperar sus condiciones hidrogeomorfológicas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The ecological state of the riverbanks is an essential element in the management of a hydrographic basin, since it reflects the quality of the water and the aquatic habitat. This study evaluated the ecological condition of the banks at eight sampling sites of the Huixtla River through the riverside ecological quality index (RQI); moreover, physical-chemical parameters of the water were also determined. Conditions ranged from very good to bad. Site S1 was the best quality, observing a strip of continuous riparian vegetation of considerable width and length. The sites with poor and bad condition presented riparian vegetation in patches, retaining walls and rectified channel, compacted soil, and extraction of sand from the river. These results coincide with those obtained in other similar rivers that are altered by human activities such as change in land use, grazing, and channel rectification. It is concluded that the banks need restoration measures to recover their hydrogeomorphological conditions.]]></p></abstract>
