En México, los estudios están enfocados mayormente en efluentes hospitalarios o de industrias farmacéuticas, mientras que los domésticos han sido poco abordados. Con el objetivo de describir la ecotoxicidad de los medicamentos en Tuxpan, Veracruz, se aplicaron encuestas a los hogares. Se identificó que los medicamentos son almacenados de manera incorrecta y desechados junto con el residuo domiciliario o drenaje. La población desconoce las farmacias autorizadas para el acopio de medicamentos caducos, favoreciendo así el ingreso de medicamentos a los ecosistemas del municipio. Los antiinflamatorios no esteroideos como el paracetamol y el ácido acetilsalicílico resultaron los más presentes en los hogares junto con antibióticos, antihipertensivos y anticonceptivos. Se identificó que los grupos farmacológicos presentes en los hogares poseen gran potencial ecotóxico sobre organismos acuáticos y ecosistemas, tales como manglares y arrecifes.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Allopathic medicines for domestic use are emerging contaminants that, when discarded incorrectly, generate negative environmental impacts. In Mexico, studies are mostly focused on hospital effluents or pharmaceutical industries, whereas domestics have been poorly addressed. In order to describe the ecotoxicity of medicines in Tuxpan, Veracruz, household surveys were applied. It was identified that the drugs are incorrectly stored and thrown away in household waste or drainage. It was also found that the population is unaware of pharmacies authorized for the collection of expired drugs, thus, encouraging the admission of drugs to ecosystems of the municipality. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid, along with antibiotics, antihypertensives and hormonal pills, were the most common in households. It was identified that pharmacological groups present in households have great ecotoxic potential on aquatic organisms and ecosystems, such as mangroves and reefs.]]></p></abstract>
