One of the major health issues is the consumption of potentially toxic elements through fish intake, particularly in urban areas. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the human health risks of fish consumers. This study aims to determine concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn in the liver and muscle of freshwater carp (Cyprinus carpio) caught in El Tunal River, Durango, Mexico. Carps were collected in dry (n = 7) and rainy (n = 10) seasons. The highest concentrations of all elements were found in the liver, where As and Zn (4.83 and 6.51 µg/g w/w, respectively) were predominant. Meanwhile, As, Cr, and Zn (1.00, 1.12, and 1.09 µg/g w/w, respectively) were predominant in muscle. The concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Zn had significant differences between seasons (p &lt; 0.05), showing that during the rainy season the concentration of elements in the river, and hence in fish tissues, was reduced. Elements in edible tissue were below the levels allowed in Mexico and by international agencies. The mean and total target hazard quotients were below 1, indicating a minor risk to human health. Based on this study, fish consumption does not represent a risk to human health; however, it is necessary to continue monitoring pollutants since their accumulation can increase over time.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La contaminación ambiental representa un grave problema a nivel mundial. Uno de los principales problemas de salud es el consumo de elementos potencialmente tóxicos debido a la ingesta de pescado contaminado, particularmente en áreas urbanas, por lo cual es necesario evaluar los riesgos para la salud de los consumidores de pescado. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar las concentraciones de As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb y Zn en hígado y músculo de peces carpa (Cyprinus carpio) capturados en el río El Tunal, Durango, México. Las carpas fueron recolectadas en temporada seca (n = 7) y lluviosa (n = 10). Las concentraciones más altas de todos los elementos se encontraron en el hígado, donde predominaron el As y Zn (4.83 y 6.51 µg/g p.h., respectivamente), mientras que el As, Cr y Zn (1.00, 1.12 y 1.09 µg/g p.h., respectivamente) fueron mayores en el músculo. Las concentraciones de As, Cd, Cr, Pb, y Zn exhibieron diferencias significativas entre temporadas (p &lt; 0.05), lo cual demuestra que durante la temporada lluviosa se reducen las concentraciones de estos elementos en el río y, por ende, en los tejidos de los peces. Los elementos en el tejido comestible estuvieron por debajo de los límites máximos permitidos en México y por organismos internacionales. Los cocientes de riesgo objetivo medio y objetivo total fueron menores a 1, lo cual indica un riesgo mínimo para la salud humana. De acuerdo con este estudio, el consumo de pescado no constituye un riesgo para la salud de las personas; sin embargo, es necesario continuar el monitoreo de los contaminantes, ya que su acumulación puede incrementarse con el tiempo.]]></p></abstract>
