<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0188-49992006000100005&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S0188-49992006000100005&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S0188-49992006000100005&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La ciudad de San Luis Potosí, México, se ha desarrollado alrededor de una gran actividad industrial minero-metalúrgica con más de un siglo de operaciones que han incrementado los niveles de contaminación por partículas con elementos pesados lo que ha provocado problemas de salud en la población, atribuidos exclusivamente a las refinerías de cobre y zinc de la ciudad. Sin embargo, el alto desarrollo industrial ha dado lugar al establecimiento de otras empresas importantes situadas en una zona industrial cuya ubicación está diametralmente opuesta a la zona minero-metalúrgica, que también ha contribuido considerablemente en la generación de partículas contaminantes. La medición de los niveles de contaminación por partículas suspendidas totales y elementos pesados, ha proporcionado información global cuantitativa, sin embargo, estos estudios no aportan información específica de las características individuales de las partículas antrópicas y por tanto, no es posible asociar a tipos específicos de fuentes contaminantes. La contribución de este trabajo es revelar las características morfológicas y de composición química de las partículas atmosféricas, a través de técnicas de microscopia electrónica, lo que ha permitido asociarlas a tipos específicos de emisiones industriales. Con el objeto de comparar y confirmar la procedencia de las partículas atmosféricas antrópicas también se realizaron análisis de algunas emisiones industriales por las mismas técnicas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The city of San Luis Potosí, México, has grown in an area of intense metallurgic activity with more than a century of operations. This metallurgic activity has an impact on the pollution levels for heavy metals particles resulting in health problems in the population, that have been attributed exclusively to the copper and zinc refineries of the city. However, the high industrial development has given place to other important industries located in an area opposed to the location of the metallurgic zone. This industrial area has also considerably contributed to the generation of polluting particles. The measurements of pollution levels of total suspended particles and heavy elements has provided quantitative global information, nevertheless, these studies do not generate specific information on the morphology and chemical composition of the anthropogenic particles, and therefore, it is not possible to associate them to specific types of polluting sources. The aim of this work is to reveal the morphological characteristics and chemical composition of the anthropogenic airborne particles, through electron microscopy techniques, which allow the association with specific industrial emissions. To compare and confirm the origin of the anthropogenic air-borne particles, the characterization of some industrial emissions with the same methodology, has also been carried out.]]></p></abstract>
