Não obstante, as propostas de ensino com base na história da química para o ensino dos modelos atômicos não enfatizam a descontinuidade como uma parte importante desses modelos, nem são suficientes para compreender as origens e antecedentes históricos que sustentaram uma concepção de matéria descontínua antes do trabalho de John Dalton. Este artigo apresenta uma narrativa histórica visando analisar diferentes ideias sobre a descontinuidade da matéria surgidas nos séculos XVII e XVIII. Espera-se que tal apresentação histórica possa auxiliar pesquisadores, professores e estudantes de graduação que buscam uma leitura introdutória a esta temática.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Understanding the discontinuity of matter is fundamental for comprehending chemical theories, but its comprehension has several obstacles. Moreover, teaching proposals based on the history of chemistry for the teaching of atomic models usually do not emphasize discontinuity as an essential aspect of these models; neither are they enough to understand the origins and historical background that sustained a discontinuous view of matter before John Dalton&#8217;s work. This article presents a historical narrative aiming to analyze different ideas on the discontinuity of matter that appeared during the 17th and 18th centuries. Hopefully, such a historical presentation can reach scholars, teachers, and undergraduate students looking for an introductory reading on this topic.]]></p></abstract>
