En México se han generado iniciativas para el fomento de este cultivo, como el decreto de ley de fomento al cultivo del amaranto y la declaración del 15 de octubre como el Día Nacional del Amaranto, que pretende reconocer el aporte cultural, ecológico, social y agrícola de este alimento. Ante la perspectiva de que se incremente la superficie de cultivo en el país, es importante identificar condiciones adecuadas para su desarrollo y definir los sitos donde éste se puede promover en México. Por lo anterior, el objetivo de la presente investigación fue definir las áreas de México con potencial productivo en condiciones de temporal para la producción de amaranto. Se consideraron los requerimientos de altitud, temperatura, precipitación, intensidad lumínica y suelo requerido por el amaranto, mediante la consulta de bases de datos, bibliografía y expertos en el cultivo. Para la determinación de las zonas potenciales se empleó el software QGIS 3.22.14 Batioweiza. Las bases de dato usadas fueron los modelos de elevación digital del INEGI, de temperatura media y precipitación de WorldClim versión 2.0, y de suelos. La escala empleada fue de 1:250,000. Se encontró que las zonas de alto potencial se localizan en 26 de los 32 estados de la República Mexicana. Las mayores superficies bajo condiciones de temporal para producir amaranto se ubicaron en Jalisco, Michoacán, Estado de México, Oaxaca, Puebla y Guanajuato. Se determinó que existen 7,621,722 ha de alto potencial y 1,054,665 ha, de mediano potencial para la producción de amaranto en México bajo condiciones de temporal.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary Amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) is a plant that has played a fundamental role in Mexican culture and agriculture since pre-Columbian times. In Mexico, initiatives have been taken to promote this crop, such as the decree of law promoting amaranth cultivation, and the declaration of October 15th as the National Day of Amaranth, which aims to recognize the cultural, ecological, social and agricultural contribution of this food. In view of the prospect of an increase in the area under cultivation of amaranth in the country, it is important to identify appropriate conditions for its development and define the sites where its cultivation should be promoted in Mexico. Therefore, the objective of this research was to define the areas in Mexico with productive potential for amaranth production under rainfed conditions. The altitude, temperature, precipitation, light intensity and soil requirements for amaranth were considered by consulting databases, bibliography and experts in the crop. The QGIS 3.22.14 Batioweiza software was used. The databases consulted were the INEGI digital elevation model, the average temperature and precipitation of WorldClim version 2.0, and soils. The scale used was 1:250,000. It was found that high potential zones are located in 26 of the 32 states of the Mexican republic. The largest areas under rainfed conditions to produce amaranth were located in Jalisco, Michoacan, State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Puebla and Guanajuato.
