Es una fruta producida en países con clima templado, y su cultivo en zonas altas tropicales ha sido poco estudiado. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar algunas propiedades físico-químicas y funcionales de la fruta kiwi Tropical Highland. Esta población seleccionada es de bajo requerimiento frío invernal y se produce en una zona alta tropical de Veracruz, México. Los atributos evaluados en el fruto se compararon con los del cv. Hayward. El tamaño y peso del fruto fueron mayores en el cv. Hayward, mientras que Tropical Highland tuvo menor número de semillas, presumiblemente debido a una baja polinización. La acidez titulable y los oBrix fueron mayores en kiwi Tropical Highland. La concentración de clorofila, fenoles totales y capacidad antioxidante fueron menores en los extractos de la pulpa del kiwi Tropical Highland. En contraste, la concentración de flavonoides fue mayor en el kiwi Tropical Highland. Tropical Highland, generado en México, tuvo propiedades funcionales adecuadas y representa una nueva opción frutícola para ser considerada en otras zonas altas en los trópicos de México y Mesoamérica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary The kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) consumed in Mexico is mostly imported. It is a fruit produced in countries with a temperate climate, and its cultivation in high-altitude tropical areas has been little studied. The objective of the study was to evaluate some physical-chemical and functional properties of the Tropical Highland kiwifruit. This selected population has a low winter chilling requirement and it is produced in a high-altitude tropical area of Veracruz, Mexico. The traits evaluated were compared with those of cv. Hayward. The size and weight of the fruit were greater in cv. Hayward while the Tropical Highland had fewer seeds, presumably due to poor pollination. Titratable acidity and °Brix were higher Tropical Highland kiwifruit. The chlorophyll concentration, total phenols and antioxidant capacity were lower in the extracts of the Tropical Highland kiwifruit pulp. In contrast, the flavonoids concentration was higher in the Tropical Highland kiwifruit. The Tropical Highland kiwifruit, developed in Mexico, had adequate functional properties and represents a new fruit option to be considered in other highland areas in the tropics of Mexico and Mesoamerica.]]></p></abstract>
