Para hacer frente a esta situación, el Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias implementó un programa de mejoramiento genético con la finalidad de generar variedades nacionales acordes a las condiciones ambientales de las áreas de producción. El objetivo del presente estudio fue desarrollar híbridos clonales y su posterior selección, así como evaluar su comportamiento con base en caracteres morfológicos. El material genético se originó en 2010 mediante cruza manual entre una población colectada en el estado de Morelos y dos en Oaxaca, con dos variedades comerciales: Prestige Red y Freedom Red. Cuatro híbridos experimentales y sus parentales masculinos se evaluaron de 2013 a 2016 en Tetela del Monte, Morelos, México. Se practicó selección en cada año de evaluación; ésta consistió en eliminar plantas altas, con entrenudos largos, con hojas y brácteas pequeñas e inflorescencias con diámetro grande de ciatios. El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar con 10 repeticiones. Se registraron 11 caracteres morfológicos relacionados con la hoja, bráctea, ciatio y altura de planta. Se realizó análisis de varianza y prueba de comparación de medias mediante la prueba de Tukey. Los híbridos experimentales mostraron diferencias estadísticas significativas (P &#8804; 0.05) en altura de planta, número de entrenudos, amplitud del dosel de bráctea, diámetro de ciatio, longitud de bráctea, ancho de bráctea, longitud del peciolo de hoja y de bráctea. No hubo diferencias en número de ramas y tamaño de hoja. Los años de evaluación afectaron el comportamiento de los híbridos experimentales. Las características de los híbridos HEZ1 y HEZ2 son similares a las de sus progenitores comerciales masculinos, por lo que existe potencial para ser ofertados como variedades comerciales en México.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary In Mexico, poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Klotzsch) cultivation depends on varieties developed in other countries, and there is a constant demand for new varieties of this species. The National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock Research implemented a breeding program to develop national varieties according to the environmental conditions of the production areas. The aim of thisresearch was to developed clonal hybrids and to carry out subsequent selection, as well as to evaluate their performance based on morphological characteristics. The genetic material originated in 2010 through manual crossing between one population collected in the state of Morelos and two in Oaxaca to two commercial varieties: Prestige Red and Freedom Red. Four experimental hybrids and their male parents were evaluated from 2013 to 2016 in Tetela del Monte, Morelos, Mexico. Selection was performed in each evaluation year; it consisted in eliminating tall plants, and those with long internodes, small leaves and bracts, and inflorescences with large cyathia diameter. The experimental design was completely randomized with ten replications. Eleven morphological traits related to leaf, bract, cyathium and plant height were recorded. Analysis of variance and Tukey means comparison test were performed. The experimental hybrids showed significant statistical differences (P &#8804; 0.05) in plant height, number of internodes, bract canopy width, cyathium diameter, bract length, bract width, leaf petiole and bract length. There were no differences in number of branches and leaf size. The years of evaluation affected the performance of experimental hybrids. The characteristics of hybrids HEZ1 and HEZ2 are similar to those of their male commercial progenitors, so they could potentially be offered as commercial varieties in Mexico.]]></p></abstract>
