Although their leaf variation has been recorded, it has not been studied comparatively with other Tilia species present in Europe or Asia. The purpose of this work was to identify leaf morpho-anatomical characters that contribute to Tilia species differentiation. In this work we describe and compare the leaf architecture and anatomy of eight species and four subspecies belonging to the genus Tilia.  Methods: Leaves of eight species and four subspecies were collected or removed from collections. Complete leaves were cleared and stained to describe their architecture, and their anatomy was characterized through transverse and paradermal sections.  Key results: Results showed that leaves are variable in shape, margin dentate with first and second order teeth, secondary venation mostly craspedodromous and well-developed areole. Leaves were hypostomatic heterobaric and with three types of midvein. The combination of characters favored the recognition of species. For example, T. platyphyllos is characterized by teeth with narrower bases, T. mongolica is the only species with a deltoid lamina and without domatia, and T. caroliniana subsp. occidentalis is distinguished by the lamina with three teeth per cm and four-armed stellate trichomes with a length of 332 µm. A key is provided for species and subspecies studied.  Conclusions: The different combinations of leaf characters are promising for the systematics of the genus Tilia.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes y Objetivos: El género Tilia (Malvaceae) consta de aproximadamente 23 especies con límites poco claros entre algunas de ellas, especialmente para las especies y subespecies que se distribuyen exclusivamente en América del Norte. Aunque se ha registrado la variación de sus hojas, no se ha estudiado comparativamente con otras especies de Tilia presentes en Europa o Asia. El propósito de este trabajo fue identificar caracteres morfoanatómicos foliares que contribuyen a la diferenciación de especies de Tilia. En este trabajo describimos y comparamos la arquitectura y anatomía foliar de ocho especies y cuatro subespecies que pertenecen al género Tilia.  Métodos: Se recolectaron o removieron de colecciones hojas de ocho especies y cuatro subespecies. Se aclararon y tiñeron hojas completas para describir su arquitectura y mediante cortes transversales y paradermales se caracterizó su anatomía.  Resultados clave: Los estudios mostraron que las hojas tienen forma variable, margen dentado con dientes de primer y segundo orden, venación secundaria mayoritariamente craspedódroma y areolas bien desarrolladas. Las hojas son hipostomáticas heterobáricas y con tres tipos de nervadura central. La combinación de caracteres favoreció el reconocimiento de especies. Por ejemplo, T. platyphyllos se caracteriza por dientes con bases más estrechas, T. mongolica es la única especie con lámina deltoide y sin domacios y T. caroliniana subsp. occidentalis se distingue por una lámina con tres dientes por cm y tricomas estrellados de cuatro brazos con una longitud de 332 µm. Se presenta una clave para las especies y subespecies estudiadas.  Conclusiones: Las diferentes combinaciones de caracteres foliares son prometedoras para la sistemática del género Tilia.]]></p></abstract>
