Among options, the phytoremediation causes minimum alterations to soil, low cost, it has proved good efficiency and gained public acceptation. In the present study, the capacity of Mimosa pigra to restore a contaminated soil with both anthracene and phenanthrene was evaluated, along with the soil physicochemical changes due to both plant and contaminant presence in the soil. A silt-loam contaminated soil with 100 mg kg-1 (dry weight) anthracene and 200 mg kg-1 (dry weight) phenanthrene was used in all three treatments: Contaminated soil with M. pigra (C1), contaminated soil without M. pigra (C2), and not contaminated soil with M. pigra (C0) as control. After 70 days of experimentation both biomass and height of M. pigra was not affected due to soil contaminants. There was no difference among treatments for some physicochemical characteristics e.g. soil pH, electrolytic conductivity, soil-texture, and total nitrogen content throughout the experiment. M. pigra increased the soil water holding capacity after 50 and 70 days of the experiment, however, total organic carbon content was lower after 70 days compared to the control treatment. The higher contaminant removal rate was before 7 days of experimentation for all treatments. Anthracene and phenanthrene content were lower in treatments with the presence of M. pigra: 92% of phenanthrene and 80% of anthracene were removed in C1 while nearly 77% of phenanthrene and 60% of anthracene were removed in C2. This suggest a greater removal of contaminants using M. pigra. Total removal of contaminants was not achieved. However, M. pigra was able to accumulate both compounds, showing the M. pigra capability for bioremediation use in contaminated soils.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: La contaminación por hidrocarburos ha causado graves daños al medio ambiente y problemas de salud humana, para resolver este problema, se han propuesto diversas técnicas de remediación amigables con el medio ambiente, como bioacumulación, bioestimulación, atenuación natural y fitorremediación. Entre las opciones, la fitorremediación sobresale como opción debido a que causa mínimas alteraciones en el suelo, tiene bajo costo, posee buena eficiencia, y aceptación pública. En el presente estudio se evaluó la capacidad de Mimosa pigra para remediar suelos contaminados con antraceno y fenantreno, así como el efecto de los contaminantes y de la planta sobre las propiedades fisicoquímicas del mismo. Se evaluaron muestras de suelo franco limoso contaminados con 100 mg kg-1 de antraceno y 200 mg kg-1 de fenantreno separados en tres tratamientos: Suelo contaminado con planta (C1), sin planta (C2), y suelo no contaminado con planta (C0) como control. Luego de 70 días de experimentación se observó que la biomasa y longitud de M. pigra no fueron afectadas por la presencia del contaminante. El pH, conductividad electrolítica, la textura y el contenido de nitrógeno del suelo no presentaron diferencias al finalizar el experimento. M. pigra incrementó la capacidad de retención de agua y disminuyó el contenido de carbono orgánico del suelo. La tasa de remoción de los contaminantes fue más alta en los primeros siete días de experimentación: se removieron 92% de fenantreno y 80% de antraceno del suelo en presencia de M. pigra, mientras sólo el 77% de fenantreno y 60% de antraceno en su ausencia, es decir, la remoción de ambos contaminantes se vio influenciada por la presencia de la planta, aunque no se observó la remoción total de los contaminantes tras finalizar el experimento. M. pigra mostró la capacidad de acumular antraceno y fenantreno en raíz y tallo.]]></p></abstract>
