El nivel de degradación del suelo puede ser medido a través índices y de propiedades sensibles a cambios funcionales en los primeros 20 centímetros. El propósito del trabajo fue conocer si existe relación entre el tipo de cobertura y la degradación física y biológica del suelo. El área de estudio fue una terraza fluvial de la cuenca de Zapotitlán en el valle de Tehuacán Puebla México, donde prevalece un clima semiseco, semicálido y un suelo tipo Fluvisol calcárico. El uso del suelo es una combinación de parches de matorral espinoso, separados por claros con suelo desnudo y tapetes de costras microbióticas, y terrenos agrícolas. En ocho sitios con diferente cobertura, se tomaron tres muestras de suelo superficial, donde se midieron 17 propiedades físicas y químicas, con los datos obtenidos se calcularon los índices de degradación física y biológica para cada sitio. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que la degradación física y biológica del suelo está significativamente relacionada con la cobertura o uso del terreno, el principal impacto sobre el funcionamiento físico del suelo se debe a la reducción del espacio poroso, pérdida de la estabilidad de los agregados, formación de costras y aumento de la densidad aparente, todo indica que la degradación física y biológica del suelo es consecuencia de la reducción de la materia orgánica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Any modification that leads to a loss in soil function is considered as soil degradation. The degree of degradation can be measured by indicators and soil properties that are sensitive to functional changes in the top 20 cm. This study aimed to determine whether there where a relationship between the type of soil cover and its physical and biological degradation. The study area was a fluvial terrace of the Zapotitlán basin in the Tehuacán valley, Puebla State, Mexico. The climate is semi-dry semi-hot and the soils are calcic Fluvisols. The land is a combination of thorny scrub separated by clearings of bare soil with mats of microbial crusts, it was partly used for agriculture activities. In eight sites with different coverage, three samples were taken from surface soil, which measured 17 physical and chemical properties, with data obtained indices were calculated physical and biological degradation for each site. Physical and biological degradation of the soil was significantly related with land cover and land use; the main effects on the physical functioning of the soil were reduction in porosity, loss of aggregate stability, crusts formation of and increase in bulk density, which indicates that physical and biological degradation of this soil is a consequence of a reduction in organic matter.]]></p></abstract>
