En un ejido ubicado en la zona de amortiguamiento de la reserva La Sepultura, se dieron consecutivamente dos grandes cambios de uso del suelo en el curso de los últimos 50 años: la transición de bosque a maizales y de maizales a potreros. Sin embargo, no es claro si la segunda transición detuvo o incrementó el deterioro de la calidad del suelo, y si la faceta topográfica y las variantes de tipo de cubierta herbácea en cada uso del suelo (TCS) modifican la respuesta a esta pregunta. Para contestar ambas preguntas se eligió una microcuenca con los tres usos de suelo, en condiciones topográficas comparables y manejada por un solo propietario. Se colectaron muestras de suelo para evaluar algunos indicadores de calidad edáfica. Mediante el método de interceptos sobre transectos se registró la frecuencia de los diferentes TCS en dos tipos de faceta topográfica (crestas y cañadas) en tres momentos diferentes entre las temporadas de lluvia y de sequía. La transición de bosque a maizal no disminuyó la calidad del suelo en las crestas, pero sí en las cañadas. La transición de maizal a potrero redujo la calidad edáfica en las crestas, pero no en las cañadas. El TCS no se asoció con la calidad del suelo debido a la variación estacional de humedad y al pastoreo selectivo del ganado. En conclusión, la transición de maizal a potrero continuó disminuyendo la calidad del suelo de un nivel alto a medio en las facetas de ladera que por su menor pendiente son más pastoreadas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Clearing forests and transforming them into agricultural land contributes significantly to soil degradation and loss. This process has been tracked for two major consecutive land use changes that occurred over the past 50 years in an ejido in the buffer zone of the La Sepultura Reserve: the transitions from forest to cornfields and from the latter to grasslands. It is not clear whether the second transition aggravated, reduced or reverted soil quality loss nor, especially, whether the slope and the specific types of soil cover within each land use affect the outcome. In order to answer these questions, a small watershed with the three land uses on comparable topography and managed by a single owner was selected. Soil samples were obtained to evaluate their quality. A line intercept method was used to estimate soil cover types within each land use, under two topographic units (ridges and ravines), and repeated three times throughout two seasons: rainy and dry. The transition from forest to cornfield did not decrease the soil quality on ridges but did in the ravines. The transition from cornfield to grassland reduced soil quality on the ridges, but not in the ravines. Soil quality was not associated with soil cover type within each land use due to the seasonal variations in moisture and selective cattle grazing. The transition from cornfield to grassland further decreased the quality of soil from high quality to average where more grazing occurred.]]></p></abstract>
