En el presente estudio se evaluó de julio a septiembre de 2006, el efecto del sistema radical de cuatro cultivos, tres de escarda (Zea mays L., Phaseolus vulgaris L. y Cucurbita pepo L.) y uno tupido (Avena sativa L.), en la pérdida de suelo y el escurrimiento superficial. Se establecieron 16 lotes de escurrimiento de 1 m2 en el campo experimental Lomas de San Juan, de la Universidad Autónoma de Chapingo, en Chapingo, Estado de México, en un suelo Entisol migajón-arenoso de 40 cm de profundidad, con una pendiente de 2%. La densidad de siembra fue en maíz y frijol de 10 matas m-2 (dos plantas por mata), en calabacita 4 plantas m-2 y en avena 1964 tallos m-2. Se midió la densidad longitudinal de raíces mediante la relación longitud radical y volumen de suelo, las mediciones se realizaron a los 15, 30, 50 y 65 días de desarrollo de las plantas. Después de cada evento de simulación de lluvia se cuantificó el escurrimiento superficial y la pérdida de suelo. Los resultados mostraron relaciones negativas entre la densidad longitudinal de raíces (DLR) y la pérdida de suelo. No así entre la DLR y el escurrimiento superficial. Se concluye que el sistema radical de los cultivos considerados tiene mayor efecto sobre la reducción de la pérdida de suelo que sobre el escurrimiento superficial. Pero no se detectaron resultados significativamente disímiles entre los sistemas radicales de los diferentes cultivos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Soil loss resulting from the impact of the rain drops is reduced by the combined effect of root systems and plant cover and is associated with crop cultivation. With this in mind, the present study was conducted from July to September, 2006, to evaluate the effect of the root system of four crops, three row crops (Zea mays L., Phaseolus vulgaris L. y Cucurbita pepo L.) and a broadcast crop (Avena sativa L.), on soil loss and surface runoff. Sixteen 1 m2 runoff plots were established on a 40 cm deep sandy-loam Entisol with a 2% slope. The sowing rate for maize and beans was 10 hills m2 (two plants per hill), 4 plants m2 for squash, and 1964 stems m2 for oats. The measurements were conducted after 15, 30, 50, 65 days of crop development. The root length density (RLD) was obtained as a ratio between root length and soil volume. After each rainfall simulation event, runoff and soil loss were quantified. The results show negative relationships between the RLD and soil loss, but not between RLD and runoff. It is concluded that the root system of the crops considered has greater effect on the reduction of soil loss than on runoff. There are no results, however, regarding the differences among the root systems of the different crops.]]></p></abstract>
