El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar la relación entre la cobertura vegetal y la pérdida de suelo por erosión hídrica para proponer valores del factor cobertura y manejo (Factor C) de la Ecuación Universal de Pérdida de Suelo (EUPS) en diferentes sistemas agroforestales de café bajo sombra. Mediante análisis de regresión, fueron analizados datos provenientes de cinco microcuencas ubicadas en una región tropical de Veracruz, México. Las coberturas arbustiva y por mantillo ajustada por su espesor, mostraron mejores relaciones exponenciales congruentes con la tasa de pérdida de suelo (R2 = 0.70 y R2 = 0.87). El factor cobertura arbustiva y por mantillo en sistemas agroforestales de café bajo sombra (Cam) propuesto como factor sustituto del Factor C en la EUPS, explicó 68% de la variación de la pérdida de suelo. El intervalo de valores del Factor Cam varió entre 0.02 y 0.003 para sistemas agroforestales de café bajo sombra, valores mayores al valor más pequeño correspondiente a tierras forestales no disturbadas y menores al valor más grande correspondiente a potreros, praderas permanentes y tierras ociosas cubiertas por vegetación.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: There is little research on the magnitude of soil erosion in agroforestry systems and how vegetation cover controls the rate. The objective of this research was to examine the relationship between plant cover and soil loss by water erosion to propose values of coverage and management factor (C Factor) of the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) in different shade coffee agroforestry systems. Using regression analysis, data from five micro-watersheds located in a tropical region of Veracruz, Mexico, were analyzed. Shrub and litter cover, adjusted by thickness, showed better exponential relationships congruent with the rate of loss of soil (R2 = 0.70 and R2 = 0.87). The shrub and litter cover factor (Cam) in shade coffee agroforestry systems, proposed as substitute factor c in the USLE cover factor, explained 68% of the variation of soil loss. The interval of the Cam Factor varied from 0.02 to 0.003 for shade coffee agroforestry systems; values greater than the smallest value corresponded to undisturbed forest lands and the largest value corresponding to pastures, permanent grasslands and abandoned land covered by vegetation.]]></p></abstract>
