Se muestra que el tamaño de la red y su casi planaridad determinan la proporción de aristas (calles) que concentran la mayor parte de la intermediación de la red. Esta proporción explica entre el 50 y el 70% de la varianza en la cantidad de horas perdidas debido a la congestión. Los resultados indican que es casi imposible disminuir significativamente los niveles de congestión modificando la conectividad localmente, como la creación de puentes o pasos a desnivel. Esto fortalece las propuestas de invertir en transporte público masivo y en infraestructura para la movilidad activa, así como en el desarrollo de ciudades con mezclas de usos de suelo que eviten los desplazamientos largos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: This article explores the relationship between congestion and the betweenness concentration of street networks in Mexican metropolitan areas. The analysis shows that the size of the network and its quasi-planarity determine the edges&#8217; proportion, which concentrates most of the network betweenness. This edge proportion explains 50 and 70% of the variation in the number of hours lost due to congestion. The results indicate that it is almost impossible to significantly reduce congestion levels by widening streets and creating bridges or overpasses. This implication strengthens the proposals to invest in mass transit, alternative means to motorized transport, and to develop cities with a mix of land uses that avoid long commutes.]]></p></abstract>
