</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract In the last three decades of the 19th century, the United States became Mexico's main trading partner. During this process, due to their geographical position, states in the north of Mexico played a crucial role that was consolidated on the basis of establishing the railroad network. This was no novelty, however, since the fact merely confirmed a relative historic trend in trade that had existed in the region since the Porfiriaro. This article analyzes trading contacts between the two countries between 1850 and 1880 approximately and after the introduction of rail-roads. The main aim is to underline, from a regional perspective, the way border cities responded to a seriesof events that transformed Mexican foreign trade during the second half of the 19th century.
</abstract>
