Taxonomic and functional diversity patterns of fish in temperate reefs in the Mexican Pacific have not been analyzed in integrative biodiversity studies. Thus, this study compared the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity of reef fish in 4 biogeographic provinces: Californian, Cortez, Panamic, and Oceanic Islands. Species checklists were compiled from the literature, museum collections, and monitoring data from 21 sites in marine protected areas (MPAs) and 45 non-protected sites. Based on this data and 6 biological traits (size, mobility, period of activity, gregariousness, position in the water column, and diet), we calculated species richness (S), average taxonomic distinctness (&#916;+), number of functional entities (FE), functional redundancy (RED), functional vulnerability (FV), and functional volume (FVol). We registered 1,045 species; the dominant categories were benthic, highly site-attached, diurnal, solitary, medium-sized, and invertivores. The Cortez province showed the highest S and FE values, whereas the Californian province presented the lowest values. Notably, FVol was &gt;70% across the 4 biogeographic provinces, suggesting that the range of ecological functions and processes was maintained across provinces despite their contrasting biodiversity levels, environmental conditions, and evolutionary histories. A &#8220;regional backbone&#8221; was identified, consisting of 74 species and 58 FE (the fundamental species and shared ecological roles across provinces). At the regional level, low RED (&lt;3 species·FE -1) and high FV (&gt;55% of FEs represented by a single species) were observed. All provinces presented high values of &#916;+ (&gt;80%), reflecting the broad range of taxonomic lineages within the region. The MPAs presented higher S and RED than non-protected sites; however, further research is needed to elucidate the positive effects of protection.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen. Los patrones de diversidad taxonómica y funcional de peces en los arrecifes templados del Pacífico mexicano no han sido analizados mediante estudios integrativos de biodiversidad. Por lo tanto, este estudio comparó la diversidad taxonómica, filogenética y funcional de peces arrecifales en 4 provincias biogeográficas: Californiana, Cortés, Panámica e Islas Oceánicas. Se compiló una lista de especies de la literatura, las colecciones de museo y los datos de monitoreo de 21 sitios en áreas marinas protegidas (AMP) y 45 sitios no protegidos. Con base en estos datos y 6 atributos biológicos (talla, movilidad, periodo de actividad, agregación, posición en la columna de agua y dieta), calculamos la riqueza de especies (S), distintividad taxonómica promedio (&#916;+), número de entidades funcionales (EF), redundancia funcional (RED), vulnerabilidad funcional (VF) y volumen funcional (FVol). Registramos 1,045 especies; las categorías dominantes fueron bénticas, altamente unidas a un sitio, diurnas, solitarias, de talla media e invertívoras. La provincia de Cortés mostró los valores más altos de S y EF, mientras que la provincia Californiana tuvo los valores más bajos. Notablemente, FVol fue &gt;70% en las 4 provincias biogeográficas, lo cual sugiere que el intervalo de funciones y procesos ecológicos se mantuvo entre provincias, a pesar de sus contrastantes niveles de biodiversidad, condiciones ambientales e historias evolutivas. Se obtuvieron 74 especies y 58 EF en la &#8220;columna vertebral&#8221; regional (las especies fundamentales y los papeles ecológicos compartidos entre provincias). A nivel regional se observaron una RED baja (&lt;3 especies·EF -1) y una VF alta (&gt;55% de las EF representadas por una especie). Todas las provincias presentaron valores altos de &#916;+ (&gt;80%), reflejando la amplia gama de linajes taxonómicos en la región. Las AMP presentaron mayores valores de S y RED que los sitios no protegidos; sin embargo, se necesita más investigación para dilucidar los efectos positivos de la protección.]]></p></abstract>
