Bacteria of the Bacillus genus have been studied since their discovery in 1872, for their ability to synthesize metabolites of interest such as proteins used to control phytopathogens. The objective of this research was to analyze the most outstanding species of the Bacillus genus, as well as the main compounds produced by these species, and the perspectives on the use of this bacterial genus for pest and disease control.  Materials and Methods. An exhaustive search was carried out in scientific articles and books to gather the most relevant information regarding the Bacillus genus, focusing on its role as a biological control agent for pests and pathogens.  Results . The Bacillus genus includes more than 427 taxa, which can be classified into different groups. Among the biological control agents (BCA) are the Bacillus cereus group, which includes B. cereus, B. anthracis, and B. thuringiensis, and the B. subtilis group, which includes B. subtilis, B. licheniformis, and B. pumilus, mainly. B. thuringiensis, through cry genes, has molecular mechanisms to synthesize a crystalline inclusion during sporulation, which contains proteins known as endotoxins or Cry proteins. B. subtilis produces substances with a high potential for biological control, such as volatile organic compounds, as well as bioactive secondary metabolites.  Conclusion . The potential of the Bacillus genus to be used as biological control agents is evident. They are widely used for the development of different biopesticides that have advantages over other products. However, it is necessary to continue conducting research from the in vitro area in the laboratory to the field, to help guarantee their biosecurity and effectiveness.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes/Objetivo. Las bacterias del género Bacillus han sido estudiadas des- de su descubrimiento en 1872, por su capacidad de sintetizar metabolitos de interés como las proteínas utilizadas para el control fitopatógenos. El objetivo de la pre- sente investigación fue analizar las especies más destacadas del género Bacillus, así como los principales compuestos producidos por éstas, y las perspectivas en el empleo de este género bacteriano para el control de plagas y enfermedades.  Materiales y Métodos. Se realizó una exhaustiva búsqueda en artículos y libros científicos para reunir y analizar críticamente la información más relevante respec- to al género Bacillus sobre su papel como agente de control biológico.  Resultados. El género Bacillus incluye más de 427 taxones, los cuales pueden clasificarse en distintos grupos, destacando entre los agentes de control biológico (ACB) el grupo de Bacillus cereus, que incluye a B. cereus, B. anthracis, y B. thu- ringiensis y el grupo B. subtilis, comprendido por B. subtilis, B. licheniformis y B. pumilus, principalmente. B. thuringiensis, a través de genes cry, posee mecanismos moleculares para sintetizar una inclusión cristalina durante la esporulación, que contiene proteínas conocidas como endotoxinas o proteínas Cry. Bacillus subtilis produce sustancias con un alto potencial de control biológico, como lo son los com- puestos orgánicos volátiles, así como metabolitos secundarios bioactivos.  Conclusión. Es evidente el potencial del género Bacillus para ser empleados como agentes de control biológico, son muy utilizados para el desarrollo de distintos bioplaguicidas que presentan ventajas sobre otros productos, sin embargo, es ne- cesario continuar realizando investigaciones desde el área in vitro en el laboratorio hasta el campo, para contribuir a garantizar su bioseguridad y efectividad.]]></p></abstract>
