Las normas para su control han sido establecidas inicialmente por la Organización Mundial de la Salud y la Environmental Protection Agency de los Estados Unidos de América. El ruido ha sido medido principalmente en áreas abiertas, y también en áreas cerradas hospitalarias como quirófanos, unidades de cuidados intensivos y dormitorios, revelando niveles más altos que los permisibles. Pocos estudios se han dirigido a las salas de espera y recepción, pero ninguno a las salas de terapia física grupal.  Objetivo: Medir el ruido en salas de espera y terapia física grupal, y sus efectos en usuarios de un hospital de tercer nivel.  Material y métodos: Estudio transversal, observacional y descriptivo, en el que se midió el ruido en nueve salas de espera y siete salas de terapia física en tres ocasiones. Los asistentes de cada sala respondieron voluntariamente un cuestionario sobre percepción de ruido y sus efectos.  Resultados: El 40% de las áreas medidas sobrepasaron los niveles de ruido permisibles de 65 dBA. El perfil de los participantes es compatible con el descrito para cuidadores primarios. La fuente del ruido fueron las conversaciones, y los efectos más frecuentes fueron inquietud, ansiedad y cefalea.  Conclusiones: Los resultados obtenidos son semejantes a los reportados por otros autores. Las salas con mayor ruido tienen mayor comunicación a los pasillos independientemente del número de sujetos reunidos. Coincidimos en el origen del ruido y en los efectos en los usuarios.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: Noise is an inarticulate, unpleasant and polluting sound that produces negative physiological and psychosomatic effects in humans. The standards for its control have been initially established by the World Health Organization and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Noise has been measured mainly in open areas, and also in closed hospital areas such as operating rooms, intensive care units and bedrooms, revealing higher than permissible levels. Few studies have focused on waiting rooms and reception areas, but none on group physical therapy rooms.  Objective: To measure noise in waiting rooms and group physical therapy and its effects on users of a tertiary hospital.  Material and methods: Cross-sectional, observational, descriptive study. Noise was measured in nine waiting rooms and seven physical therapy rooms on three occasions. The attendants of each room voluntarily answered a questionnaire on noise perception and its effects.  Results: 44% of the measured areas exceeded the permissible noise level of 65 dBA. The participant profile is compatible with that described for primary caregivers. The source of the noise was conversations, and the most frequent effects were restlessness, anxiety, and headache.  Conclusions: The results obtained are similar to those reported by other authors. The noisiest rooms have greater communication with the hallways, regardless of the number of subjects gathered. We agree on the source of the noise and its effects on users.]]></p></abstract>
