Black Feminism and the 2 Live Crew”.
</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract: This article focuses on analyzing the role of literary critic Henry Louis Gates Jr. as an expert witness in the trial against the rap group 2 Live Crew, who were accused of obscenity for their song “Me So Horny” in the spring of 1990. It examines the application, within a legal context, of the “Signifying Monkey” theory, developed by Gates Jr. in his book The Signifying Monkey. A Theory of African-American Literary Criticism (1988), and the critique of the case —and of Gates Jr.’s involvement in it— offered by feminist thinker Kimberlé Crenshaw in her essay “Beyond Racism and Misogyny: Black Feminism and the 2 Live Crew”. The analysis presented here centers on the heteronomy between law and justice, as addressed by Jacques Derrida in Force of Law (1997), and the “public dimensions of epistemic violence” discussed by Julio Ramos in Paradojas de la letra.
</abstract>
