Tradicionalmente, ha supuesto la responsabilidad primordial de las instituciones públicas de impartir y financiar las oportunidades educativas. Sin embargo, esta función se pone cada vez más en cuestión por la mayor diversificación de los agentes implicados y de las fuentes de financiación a todas las escalas de la educación. En este documento se revisa el principio de la educación como bien público a la luz de las tendencias actuales de privatización y mercantilización de la educación. Teniendo en cuenta las implicaciones tanto económicas como políticas de la privatización, se reformula el debate teórico sobre la educación en el ámbito público. Partiendo de la necesidad de restablecer un espacio democrático de participación, se sostiene que el concepto de educación como bien común puede representar un marco complementario útil para su gobernanza en un contexto cambiante.]]></p></abstract>
