Esta situación se atribuye, entre otros factores, a las insatisfactorias condiciones laborales y al agotamiento emocional. Pese a las dificultades, hay un porcentaje significativo de profesores que permanecen. Los estudios acerca de ellos son escasos, pues la atención se ha concentrado en los que abandonan. El objetivo de esta investigación es justamente caracterizar la decisión para permanecer. Específicamente, interesa identificar la fuerza de la intención de permanecer y los factores escolares asociados. Se aplicó un cuestionario a 371 profesores principiantes, que incluye preguntas cerradas y la narración de un incidente escolar. El principal hallazgo es que la decisión de permanecer está asociada a la satisfacción que experimenta el profesor con la relación que mantiene con sus alumnos, particularmente respecto del reconocimiento y respeto que ellos le brindan.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In Chile, 42 per cent of beginner secondary-school teachers resign within the first five years of work. This situation is partly attributed to the poor working conditions and emotional exhaustion. Despite the difficulties, a significant percentage of teachers remain in their jobs. Few studies have been made about them, since the focus has been on those who leave their employment. This research paper seeks to explore their reason for staying on. In particular, the focus is on identifying their determination to remain and associated factors in the school environment. A questionnaire was distributed to 371 beginner teachers, including closed questions and a story of a school incident. The main finding is that the decision to remain is linked to how satisfied the teachers are in their relationship with their pupils, especially in terms of the recognition and respect they receive.]]></p></abstract>
