</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
ABSTRACT This article analyzes the role of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) as a hybrid actor within the geopolitical framework of the Middle East, challenging the reductionist view that confines them to being an Iranian proxy. Using an interdisciplinary approach that combines documentary review, historical analysis, and the processing of more than 18 000 georeferenced conflict events from ACLED (2017-2025), the study examines their military evolution, regional projection, and impact on international maritime security. The findings show that Ansar Allah has strengthened its relative autonomy by leveraging the political disintegration of the Yemeni state, low-cost military technologies, and its strategic position in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to trigger the Red Sea Crisis. The study acknowledges as a limitation the complexity of exhaustively quantifying their funding sources and covert alliances. It concludes that the Houthis illustrate how local actors can become disruptors of international maritime security, partially replicating the logic of protection rents. This analysis provides insights to rethink the security of global commons in a scenario of multipolar competition.
</abstract>
