Se pretende interpretar las razones de los daños observados en este terremoto para definir posibles cambios en normativas de construcción tanto en México, como en Latinoamérica, que lleven a un comportamiento aceptable de edificaciones no sólo para el terremoto de diseño, sino también para terremotos de menor intensidad, como fue el ocurrido en la Ciudad de México el 19 de septiembre 2017. Se estiman de manera aproximada las distorsiones de entrepiso de una población de edificios empleando un registro de aceleraciones obtenido en este terremoto, y los resultados se comparan con distorsiones permisibles para la población de edificios y para dos casos de estudio seleccionados para esta investigación.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The response of masonry infill walls to motions caused by the September 19, 2017 earthquake in Mexico City is evaluated. Plausible reasons for the observed damage are studied. Changes to design codes used in Mexico and Latin America are proposed to try to produce more acceptable behavior of buildings in the design earthquake and in earthquakes of smaller intensity such as the earthquake of September 19, 2017. Estimates of story drift are obtained using an acceleration record from this earthquake and the results are compared with allowable drift for a generic case and for two specific examples.]]></p></abstract>
