<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0065-17372024000100125&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S0065-17372024000100125&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S0065-17372024000100125&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In tropical dry habitats, the dry season imposes harsh environmental conditions due to the water scarcity; moreover, due to orographic characteristics and topographic depressions of the Pacific Coastal Plain, there are areas with rainwater accumulation that are formed because their soil does not allow water drainage, these natural waterholes (NW) are therefore the main source of surface water in the region when water is scarce and high temperatures are frequent. This study aimed to investigate the use of NW by wild vertebrates in a tropical dry forest of the Communal Natural Protected Area (CNPA) El Gavilán, Oaxaca, Mexico. For this, eight NW were selected in the CNPA El Gavilán and they were at 715 m a.s.l. on average. Eight camera traps were placed at natural waterholes (one each per waterhole) during the dry season from November 2016 to May 2017. Moreover, activity patterns in natural waterholes were evaluated. Twenty-two species, belonging to three classes were recorded and birds were the group with the highest number (n=13) of species records. Nasua narica was the species most recorded in all NW, with two peaks of visits. Of the total number of NW, one of them (Venero Plátano Morado) showed the shortest latency time between visitors. Given the importance of these NW within the CNPA El Gavilán, our findings are of relevance due to the growing concern regarding the expected pronounced dry seasons on the coast of Oaxaca.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen En los hábitats tropicales secos, la época de sequía impone difíciles condiciones ambientales debido a la escasez de agua. Además, debido a las características orográficas y las depresiones topográficas de la Planicie Costera del Pacífico existen áreas con acumulación de agua de pluvial que se forman debido a que los suelos no permiten su drenaje, estos bebederos naturales (NW, por sus siglas en inglés) son por tanto la principal fuente de agua superficial en la región cuando existe escasez de agua y las altas temperaturas son frecuentes. El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar el uso de los NW por los vertebrados silvestres en una selva tropical seca del Área de Protección Comunal El Gavilán, Oaxaca, México. Para esto, ocho NW fueron localizados en el APC El Gavilán a una altitud promedio de 715 m.s.n.m. Ocho cámaras trampa fueron colocadas en bebederos naturales (una por cada bebedero) durante la época de sequía, de noviembre de 2016 a mayo de 2017. Además, los patrones de actividad en bebederos naturales fueron evaluados. Veintidós especies correspondientes a tres clases fueron registradas y las aves fueron el grupo con el mayor número de registro de especies (n= 13). Nasua narica fue la especie más registrada en todos los NW, con dos picos de visitas. Del número total de NW, uno de ellos (Venero Plátano Morado) presentó el tiempo de latencia entre visitas más corto.
