Objetivo: Comparar diferencias por sexo de alteraciones metabólicas en pacientes con diabetes tipo 2 (DT2) atendidos en unidades médicas de primer nivel.  Material y métodos: Estudio transversal analítico en el que se incluyeron pacientes adultos con DT2, posterior a la firma de consentimiento informado. Se recopilaron datos sociodemográficos, antropométricos, bioquímicos y clínicos. Se evaluó la disfunción metabólica utilizando los criterios de síndrome metabólico. Se aplicaron las pruebas t de Student, &#935;2 de Pearson y U de Mann-Whitney para identificar diferencias por sexo.  Resultados: Se incluyeron 5154 pacientes con DT2. En las mujeres se observaron un índice de masa corporal más alto (29.91 vs. 28.74 kg/m2; p &lt;0.001) y una mayor proporción de obesidad (44.2% vs. 38.7%; p &lt; 0.001), hipercolesterolemia (94.0% vs. 90.5%; p &lt; 0.001) e hipoalfalipoproteinemia (75.6% vs. 24.4%; p &lt; 0.001), mientras que la microalbuminuria (36.4% vs. 18.8%; p &lt; 0.001) y la hipertensión arterial (70.3% vs. 66.7%; p &lt; 0.001) fueron mayores en los hombres.  Conclusiones: La presencia de disfunción metabólica es diferente entre mujeres y hombres. La obesidad, la hipercolesterolemia y la hipoalfalipoproteinemia fueron más frecuentes en las mujeres, y en cambio en los hombres lo fueron la hipertensión y la microalbuminuria.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: The genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of men and women determine metabolic differences, given by hormonal mechanisms and sexual dimorphism in adipose tissue, impacting the health-disease process.  Objective: To compare the gender differences in metabolic alterations in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) treated in first-level medical units.  Material and methods: Analytical transversal study. After signing informed consent, adult patients with T2D were included. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, biochemical and clinical data were collected. Metabolic dysfunction was evaluated using metabolic syndrome criteria. They were analyzed using Student t, Pearson &#935;2 and Mann-Whitney U test to identify differences by gender.  Results: 5154 patients with DT2 were included. In women, a higher body mass index was observed (29.91 vs. 28.74 kg/m2; p &lt; 0.001), and a higher proportion of obesity (44.2% vs. 38.7%; p &lt; 0.001), hypercholesterolemia (94.0% vs. 90.5%; p &lt; 0.001) and hypoalphalipoproteinemia (75.6% vs. 24.4%; p &lt; 0.001), while microalbuminuria (28.9% vs. 15.6%; p &lt; 0.001) and hypertension (70.3% vs. 66.7%; p &lt; 0.001) were higher in men.
