Objetivo: Identificar la prevalencia de depresión y factores asociados a síntomas depresivos en población adulta con diabetes mellitus tipo 2.  Material y métodos Estudio transversal en 155 adultos con diabetes tipo 2 de una zona urbana de la Ciudad de México. Se evaluaron características sociodemográficas, antropométricas, bioquímicas, clínicas, dieta y hábitos. La detección de los síntomas depresivos se hizo con la escala de depresión de Zung. Se realizó análisis de regresión logística.  Resultados. La prevalencia de síntomas depresivos fue 29.7%. Los factores asociados fueron inactividad física, vivir solos, no tener estudios, hipertensión arterial, hiperglucemia y el tiempo de evolución de la enfermedad. El riesgo de tener síntomas depresivos fue de 2.1 (IC95% 1.0 a 4.7) con valores de glucosa &#8805;130 mg/dL, de 3.6 (IC95% 1.2 hasta 11) por hipertensión arterial, 3.5 (IC95% 1.3 a 9.5) cuando vivía solo y 2.9 (IC95% 1.3 hasta 6.4) por inactividad física.  Discusión: Los factores asociados a depresión en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 fueron la hiperglucemia, hipertensión, mayor duración de la enfermedad, no tener estudios y vivir solos. Las concentraciones de glucosa en sangre y el tiempo de evolución en años, fueron las variables que explicaron un mayor puntaje de síntomas depresivos.  Conclusión: La falta de reconocimiento de síntomas depresivos o una detección tardía conlleva a complicaciones de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Estos pacientes requieren una educación en salud adecuada, apoyo para desarrollar estrategias de autocuidado y atención de la depresión.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction: People with type 2 diabetes can suffer psychological disorders such as depression, which affect their physical, mental, and emotional state. Objective: The aim of this study to identify the prevalence of depression and factors associated with depressive symptoms in adults with type 2 diabetes.  Material and methods: Cross-sectional study in 155 adults with type 2 diabetes from Mexico City. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical, diet and habits characteristics were evaluated. Depressive symptoms were measured with the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. Logistic regression analysis was performed.  Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 29.7%. The associated factors were physical inactivity, living alone, a lower educational level, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and the duration of diabetes. The risk of having depressive symptoms was 2.1 (95% CI 1.0 - 4.7) with glucose values &#8805;130 mg / dL, 3.6 (95% CI 1.2-11) for hypertension, 3.5 (95% CI 1.3-9.5) when living alone and 2.9 (CI95% 1.3-6.4) due to physical inactivity.  Discussion: The factors associated with depression in patients with T2D were hyperglycemia, hypertension, longer duration of diabetes, a lower educational level and living alone. Blood glucose concentrations and longer duration of diabetes in years were the variables that explained a higher score for depressive symptoms.  Conclusions: Lack of recognition of depressive symptoms or late detection leads to complications of diabetes. These patients require adequate health education, with support to develop self-care and emotional adjustment strategies against depression.]]></p></abstract>
